A girl for Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi: Athena

If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Many congratulations to Prss Beatrice and Edo on the early? birth of their second baby, little Athena. (Same really lovely name as the teen daughter of Pr Joachim and Prss Marie of Denmark, incidentally.) I'm sure Wolfie and Sienna are delighted with their baby sister. Is there a red tinge to the hair I can see there?
I thought there was a reddish tinge to the hair as well.

Surprised she used Elizabeth again as a middle name. Would have been nice to have honoured Sarah's mother Susan this time.
Weren't there some hard feelings with Sarah's mother over the divorce and her removing to Argentina?
I seem to remember that!

Hey, shouldn't we start speculating that she will one day marry Princess Maria Laura of Belgium's son who was born today? Talk about a meet cute!

Neither one of them was born today. Athena was born last Wednesday (22) and Albert was born last Sunday (26).

Oh, I love the picture with her little arm up as if to say, "Please, no pictures!" I see a red tinge to her hair, too. What a sweet little package of joy.

Beautiful name, couldn't be nicer. I feel it's very Victorian to use the former sovereign's name in your children's names. There were so many Victoria's running around at the turn of the last century.

I love the name - and using Elizabeth again like her bigger sister Sienna. Both Bea's girls have the most beautiful names.

Baby Athena was actually born on my own birthday (22 jan) and it is also the anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria who died on 22 jan 1901 and I think Beatrice resembles so very much

Well your mother is still your mother and Sarah loved her. I sometimes think the Yorks need constant validation of who they are and putting Elizabeth in both of Beatrice's daughters names is, I think, a symptom of that. Before Louise and James Wessex came along the closest grandchildren to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were undoubtedly Peter and Zara and yet it took both of them to have a second daughter before including the name Elizabeth. They adored their grandmother but never needed to prove it which was to their credit.

We have no way of knowing any of that. It's a name.

And Sarah is not the mother.

What is Beatrice trying to prove or validate? No one doubts she is Elizabeth's granddaughter.

There’s also George Alexander Louis and Louis Arthur Charles. (And for “Charles” we also have Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.) So it’s not a first.

Sky News said about 7 weeks early, but it sounds as if everything's OK. Lovely news.

With Beatrice having to change her plans to spend Christmas abroad, it sounds as if there may have been some complications with the pregnancy, but thankfully all is well, and they've been allowed home from hospital.
7 weeks is quite early. I am surprised they were allowed home so soon, and glad that both mother and daughter are doing OK.

I agree. Beatrice and her late Majesty were very close by all accounts.

Beatrice was chosen to wear the queen's own bridal tiara at her wedding, not eldest granddaughter Zara.. A true drop-the-mic moment if there was one.

I didn't think it at all noteworthy that "Elizabeth" is included in the names of Beatrice's daughters.

Surely a mother should be able to call her child whatever she likes. It is nice to discuss but let us not go too far.
Perhaps your comment best directed at Sophie who I was responding to, who suggested she used Elizabeth simply to validate her role.

My niece was born at 34+0 weeks and went home about a week later. She was tiny but only had to learn how to feed and breathe at the same time. There were some health issues my sister in law was having that made a premature birth likely so she received steroid injections to help with lung development.

Maybe she was earlier than expected but I doubt she was 7 weeks early. The announcement of Beatrice’s pregnancy said the baby was expected “early in the New Year.” This to me would suggest January. There can be many reasons for a baby to have a low birth weight and perhaps they required extra monitoring towards the end.
My own firstborn required such monitoring and was born at 41+5 at 6lb.

I did not intend it specifically for you, my apologies if that is how it presented itself. It was addressed in a general way,

I wouldn't call it a 'drop the mic' moment at all. I have no doubt that Zara could have worn the fringe tiara her mother and grandmother wore on their wedding day had she chosen to do so. Beatrice was not 'chosen' to wear the Queen's wedding tiara, she obviously asked for it and it was loaned for the day.

It's possible that Beatrice asked, but more likely that HM had reserved it for Beatrice's use as was reported in several media at the time of the wedding.

In any case the late queen could have refused such an extraordinary request of her own wedding tiara ... it's not like she was a pushover. But she didn't.

And it was quite an honor for Princess Beatrice to wear it.

I doubt it was reserved for her. However, I doubt it was offered to Kate or Meghan. Zara was always going to use one of her mothers. That is the natural order in the family. However William and Harry’s brides had no mother to borrow from and the Yorks no real tiaras, as the York one obvious.y wasn’t considered. It was probably therefore put forward as an option for both Eugenie and Beatrice. Won’t have suited Eugenie’s dress. Also it was probably a whole package for Beatrice with borrowing the dress.

I don't think Beatrice has ever said why she chose the name Sienna, but the speculation is that it was to honour Sarah (and possibly Susan Barrantes too), but that they wanted a name which, whilst beginning with an S, sounded a bit Italian and was up to date. Sarah was a very popular name for girls born in the 1960s and 1970s but isn't now, and Susan was very popular in the 1940s and 1950s but isn't now. Elizabeth never goes out of fashion, and Rose was an "old lady" name when I was a kid but is now very popular again. Having grown up being practically the only Beatrice in the country born after the First World War, I can understand that Bea might want to choose a name of its time.

Athena's one of those names which is becoming more popular.

I had gathered that Beatrice was to attend the Economic forum in Davos and pulled out last minute (we now know that is because of Athena's birth) - so I assume her due date was maybe Mid February.

Sienna was a smaller baby by royal standards at 6lb I recall as well

The Palace confirmed that Athena was born prematurely: "Princess Beatrice has given birth to a baby girl named Athena several weeks prematurely, Buckingham Palace has said."

Apparently they said "several weeks", no exact number.

I remember reading that COVID delayed Beatrice’s wedding which had been planned for 29 May, and the thinking was that a different dress had already been arranged. The late Queen stepped in when all those plans changed.

The most important thing is that after some difficulties Bea had the baby is born and healthy enough to go home and being taken care of by her parents. It probably was a somewhat difficult time for Bea and Edo.
I am wishing them the best, and the baby does look nice and healthy even being tiny.

Yes, I'm so glad it all turned out well and Beatrice & the baby were able to go home 🙂 It must have been a scary time for Beatrice and Edo, I hope they (Bea especially) can relax a little now.

In that case, I am happy that the Palace delayed announcing the birth until the infant was safely out of the woods.

Otherwise the Internet would have been hopping with crazy and harmful rumors.😒
