On occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Italian unification in 1861, various Heads of State and members of Royal Houses have been invited by the Italian Government to attend the celebrations that will take place in Rome on 2 June 2011.

The program of the events includes:
- in the morning a military parade, that will take place at Via dei Fori Imperiali;
- in the evening a concert followed by a dinner, both hosted at Quirinal Palace by the President of the Italian Republic.

Among those who have confirmed their presence are the King and Queen of Spain, the Crown Prince of Norway, Prince Joachim of Denmark, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, Russian President Dmitrij Medvedev.

King Juan Carlos attending the parade in Rome this morning: http://i55.tinypic.com/102p8c7.jpg
In the first row at right you can see, starting from right, the four highest officials in the Italian Republic: the President of the Chambers of Deputies Fini, the President of the Republic Napolitano,the President of the Senate Schifani and the President of the Council of Ministers Berlusconi.

And here's a gallery of pictures of King Juan Carlos with Mr. Berlusconi: Foto Berlusconi, la gaffe con Juan Carlos - 1 di 5 - Repubblica.it
A little breach in the protocol has been noticed, as Berlusconi drew the King's attention to him by touching Juan Carlos' arm.

And last, a picture galler of the whole parade:

This is the 65th birthday of the Italian Republic, which happens to fall in the 150th anniverary of the proclamation of King Vittorio Emanuele II, the 1st King of Italy. Rome, Trento and Trieste were still to be annexed to the kingdom. So the 100th anniversary of the Italian unification will be in 2018. ;)

Please go and read the comments by the monarchists about today's celebration here

Near to Crown Prince Haakon there was also Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein.

What a lovely royal celebration.

At the celebration was also present Prince Joachim of Denmark. I saw him during the live broadcast on TV.

Even if the Royal House of Savoy unified Italy the members of the Italian Royal House were not invited today.

It is not for the first time the italian President of the Council (prime minister) Silvio Berlusconi forgets the protocol.

I'm sure King Juan Carlos is so an intelligent man to attach too much importance to that.

:previous: I actually think the same thing, Tosca
