Spanish King and Queen Begin State Visit to Germany
At the invitation of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain started today, Monday October 17, a three-day state visit to Germany.
In the morning the King and the Queen were officially welcomed by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender at Bellevue Palace with a military guard of honour.
The King and the President inspected the guard of honour and then were played the national anthems. Inside the Palace took place a reception and the guest book was signed.
Afterwards the King and the Queen laid a wreath at the Neue Wache, a memorial for the victims of war, violence and tyranny.
In the afternoon King Felipe paid a visit to the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, “an international research place where scientists from all over the world investigate the basic principles underlying the chemical conversion of matter and energy at surfaces and interfaces”. The King, welcomed by the president of the institute, Mr. Martin Stratmann, and by the director of the Interface Science Department at the Institute, Beatriz Roldán, toured the laboratory and the library of the Institute.
Later King Felipe was received by Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, at the Bundeskanzleramt, the headquarters of the Federal Chancellery. After posing for the photos in front of the German building, the King and the Chancellor had a private meeting.
The first day ended with a state banquet in Bellevue Palace hosted by the German President.
