Princess Elisabeth Baptizes a Research Vessel in Ghent

Today, Saturday June 25, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, baptized the oceanographic research vessel “Research Vessel RV Belgica” in the port of Ghent during her first official engagement without her parents, Their Majesties King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Upon the arrival at the port, the Princess was welcomed by the Mayor of Ghent, Mathias De Clercq, Carina Van Cauter, Governor of East Flanders and Thomas Dermine,
Secretary of State for Recovery and Strategic Investments.
The vessel, 15 meters wide and 71 meters long, is owned by the Federal Scientific Police of the Belgian Ministry of Economy and Labor and will be managed by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense.
The “RV Belgica” will help marine scientists to continue their marine researches and expeditions “on water quality, marine sediments and fish stocks” in Belgian and European waters.
Princess Elisabeth christened the vassel by smashing a bottle of champagne against the bow of ship and then, on board, she toured the vassel, the laboratories and met the crew.
