Sweden’s Prince Gabriel Christened at Drottningholm
The youngest member of the Bernadotte clan, Prince Gabriel, was christened today at the Royal Chapel at Drottningholm Palace by Archbishop Emeritus Anders Wejryd, who was assisted by the Chief Court Chaplain, Bishop Johan Dalman, and Pastor of the Royal Court Parish, Michael Bjerkhagen.
Prince Gabriel arrived in the arms of his mother, Princess Sofia, alongside his father, Prince Carl Philip, and older brother Alexander. The infant’s godparents were announced yesterday as Princess Madeleine (paternal aunt), Ms Sara Hellqvist (maternal aunt), Mr Oscar Kylberg (his father’s friend and business partner), Ms Carolina Pihl (his mother’s friend) and Mr Thomas de Toldeo Sommerlath (his father’s maternal first cousin).
A number of traditional hymns, as well as pop songs, were performed throughout the service. Readings were given by Prince Carl Philip, Princess Madeleine and Sara Hellqvist. The Prince was also invested with the Order of the Seraphim by King Carl Gustaf at the end of the ceremony.
In a surprise for royal watchers, Princess Sofia was wearing the regional costume of Älvdalen, her home town and region of Dalarna, the Duchy that Prince Gabriel was given by his grandfather, the King.
King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia hosted a reception after the ceremony inside the Palace.Sweden
