Welcomed by the excited faces and open arms of her husband and children, the Countess of Wessex completed her palace-to-palace Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Diamond Challenge today in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

Sophie had not even climbed off her bike before Lady Louise and Viscount Severn were enveloping her in a hug, and Prince Edward was not that far behind, nor was her father, Christopher Rhys-Jones. Hundreds of spectators gathered outside the Palace gates to watch the Countess and her team ride into the final stop of their 445 mile ride.

“It has been a lovely, lovely experience,” Sophie said after she was presented with her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award pin by her son. In her final challenge blog, she said the size of the welcoming crowd was “completely overwhelming” as she wasn’t expecting so many people to turn out.

The Countess and her team were joined by Paralympic legend Dame Sarah Storey for part of the last leg. The ride has thus far raised over £180,000 for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
