President Holds Talks With Prince of Baden

President Girma Wolde-Giorgis announced that Ethiopia has paid due attention for development activities and promoted the country's tourist attractions as he confered with Max Markgraf, the prince of Baden in Germany here yesterday.

The country is now fully engaged in development activities, a senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who attended the talks quoted Girma as saying.[...]

New Prince of Baden

I'm compiling my own geneology of all the descendants of Queen Victoria. It's been as daunting as it sounds, thanks to alot of mistaken birth/death dates and locations. I'm finally finished, except for a couple minor details, one of which is the impending marriage of Prince Aimone of Savoy and Princess Olga of Greece, which I've impatiently been awaiting for several months now :( The other is the current nameless state of Prince Bernhard of Baden's third child. From Nettyroyal.nl:

Quote:

Prince Bernhard and Princess Stephanie von Baden had their third son on Sunday. The baby was born at the Elisabethen-Krankenhaus in Ravensburg at 10.40am. Prince Bernhard said: "I am very happy and am very thankful, that my wife and our child are healthy and doing well." Traditionally the name of the baby will only become known when he is baptised.
Anyway, I'm just curious to know, is there any info about when this little prince will be christened? How long after his brothers were born were they christened? I know for some of the reigning royals, the christenings were held about three to four months after the baby's birth, as in the case of Christian, Sverre Magnus and Leonor. Can we expect something similar with this new prince? Any help would be mucho appreciated!

This goes back a long way, and I guess a google search may give you some info. Here are the basics:

Carolina Louisa (born 1723 and died at Paris in 1783), daughter of Ludwig VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and Countess Charlotte of Hanau-Lichtenberg und Muntzenberg;
married in 1751 as his first wife Karl Friedrich (1728-1811), successively Margrave of Baden-Durlach, Margrave of Baden, Elector of Baden, and Grand Duke of Baden from 1806.
His reign of 73 years gives Karl Friedrich the longest reign in modern history.
They had three surviving sons.

I didn't realise you meant this Karoline Louise of Baden - there's a biography of her, a book about her art collections (still to be seen in Karlsruhe) and a chapter in a book about the women of the house of Baden, but all these books are in German, unfortunately.

This is the one about the women of Baden:
Borchardt-Wenzel, Annette
Die Frauen am badischen Hof. Gefährtinnen der Großherzöge zwischen Liebe, Pflicht und Intrigen
Katz 2001
ISBN 3925825800,

that's the biograpy:
Jan Lauts
Karoline Luise Von Baden
Karlsruhe Verlag C.F. Muller 1980

and this is the book including an article about her art collections:
Kircher, G. ,
Karoline Luise von Baden als Kunstsammlerin. Schilderungen und Dokumente zur Geschichte der Badischen Kunsthalle in Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe, Müller, 1933. 8°. VIII, 230 S. mit 24 ganzs. Abb. auf Taf. Oln. mit goldgepr. Rückentitel u. goldgepr. Deckelvignette

This is a guide through the exhibition in her honour in 1983 - 20 years after her death:
CAROLINE LOUISE. Markgräfin von Baden 1723-1783. Ausstellung anläßl. der 200. Wiederkehr ihres Todesjahres
Karlsruhe. Badisches Landesmuseum 1983. 251 S. zahlr. tls. farb. Abb. OKt.

Sorry, I couldn't find anything in English, but it might be worth to contact the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe and ask if they have any material (guidebooks, catalogues etc. in English).

If you use the German way to write her name "Karoline Luise von Baden" and google that for pictures, you'll get some.

Hope this helps.
Greetings from Germany, Jo

Prince Bernhard von Baden announced that the Family is selling Salem Castle, until the End of the Year. The auction is due to the 30 000 000 € in debts. For many decades, the family tried to avoid this step, but now it seems inevitable.
The idea of seing precious manuscripts of the Baden library being auctioned had however raised protests.

The Margrave and his wife live in a part of the Castle. Hereditary Prince Bernhard and his Family life on an Island close to the Castle. No Idea where the live in the case of an sale.

The argument about the arts collection between the Baden family and Baden-Württemberg is in the next round:

Quote:

Badische Neueste Nachrichten, 19.12.2007: Land verhandelt mit Haus Baden
... Laut der Expertise gehört der Großteil der umstrittenen Kulturschätze dem Land. Lediglich Werte von 5,6 Millionen Euro schlägt das Gutachten dem Markgrafenhaus zu.
In short: expert meaning is that most of the culture goods in question do already belong to the country Baden-Württemberg. Only a minor part is still in posession of the Markgrafenhaus Baden.

At the moment there is nothing new. There are talks between the Government of Baden-Württemberg and the Family what to do as according to the expertise made for the Government of Baden-Württemberg most of the Handwritings alreada belong the the Country. The Baden-Family sees this of course different.

Some members of the green party visited the Castle. Generally they want to maintain it as cultural heritage. However, they dislike the suggested foundation and prefer to buy to site.

Yeah . . . I don't want to see a historic castle turned into something commercial like a hotel . . .

And it's too bad about the debts/bad investments.

Harold 03-10-2008 07:31 AM

If I understand the article correctly - and I depend on Google translations - the Green party wants the state of Baden-Wurttemburg to take over ownership of the Schloss directly rather than some sort of foundation taking ownership. In any event, I would think it doubtful that the Grand Ducal family can remain there. What do you think?

Right now it is difficult to assume things. But after all silence is probably better than open discussions in the media. Hopefully they will find a solution which will serve everyone.

Anyway it is my understanding that Bernhard, Prinz von Baden, and his family do not live on the premises but closeby in a separate mansion. About his father I do not know.

And when it comes to commercial use - such as a hotel - I wouldn't decline this solution either. As long as they keep the nature of the premises and don't destroy cultural heritage ... the protection of historic monuments is quite important here. Plenty of restrictions set up.

The Margrave and the Margravine of Baden live at Salem. They have some appartements in the same Wing where the Kaisersaal is. There is also a private Garden at this side of the Castle which is not open for the public.

I think there is no one for all Germany but most federal Staate have their own.

For example

Great links, Stefan, thank you.

It's just so frustrating, as a potential public historian/preservationist, to see such an amazing place with great historical value, not only for the people but German national identity as well, go to waste on foreign investors with other ideas in mind.

Well, well, after all these media reports in several newspapers/TV the headmaster of the Salem boarding school was happy to telephone with this Singapur lawyer ... in order to find out that things weren't said in the same way the media published them.

Furtheron the family declines any knowledge of an arabian buyer and the mayor believes the plan of a German-Arabian cultural center in Salem is impossible to realize.

Independent of the truth of yesterday's news a CDU politician named Theo Wieland (member of the county assembly and town council) believes the rumours could only spread because of the inactivity/hesitation of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg .... BTW I believe my former teacher is perfectly right with his judgement. Wise man.

Marengo, unfortunatly I am no expert when it comes to questions concerning the protection of historical monuments. From hearsay I do know that things become difficult once a monument is considered historical, e.g. we had a historical school right on the waterfront in Überlingen and it took literally years until it was worked out how it could be used and converted. Finally they agreed to keep the outside facade, but removed most inside walls in order to accomodate a restaurant and offices. But then this former school was nowhere near the historical importance of Schloss Salem!

What I found is the following link: Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz:: Obj5654 Zisterzienserabtei Salem

If indeed subsidies were paid for the maintenance of the castle there will certainly be some sort of default clause in the agreement concering the payments. However, please note this is an assumption. Maybe there is an expert on the board concerning these questions?

Sad that the Badens have to sell a piece of their family history like this Scholsser Salem Castle to pay off a debt. What a pity!!

But maybe in the long run better for the estate. Last year there was a news report saying that they stop on maintenance in order to save money and will only do what is really, really urgent. Now, if you economize like this for too long, it might be worse for the castle than selling it to someone who can afford to pay regular maintenance.

Odette 08-25-2008 10:41 PM

Avicenna: When I go from Zurich towards the Bodensee and get the ferry across to Germany at Meersburg, there is right on the lake a large castle that serves as a hotel. The rooms are as they used to be, huge and are furnished with antiques. I believe they have about 25 rooms. There is the tower with the spiral staircase and the restaurant is open to the public and the guests.
If you know which castle I am talking about can you tell me if this was ever a property of a local noble and what is the history behind it?
Thank you
odette

Avicenna 08-26-2008 08:42 AM

Odette, I am not sure which building you mean. Is it in Meersburg? Next to the ferry-harbor? This could only be the so called "Wilder Mann". But they have 55 rooms .... and it is not a castle, though it certainly looks impressive.

Strandhotel "Wilder Mann"

Please let me know, if this is what you mean.

Otherwise there is a former monastary south of the Birnau basilica, in a short distance. Or are you talking of the other side of the lake: Konstanz?
Please spezify. But probably it is better to send me a mail as this is not related to the Baden-Family-thread.

They could given the castle to a close or distant cousin of the family and still keep it in the family. And The cousin or cousins could keep maintance of the castle there is more than one option in case well atleast in my modest opinion.

To which Cousin should they give it? Prince Ludwig the brother of Margrave max has his own Castle Zwingenberg and there are no riich relatives. The problem is that at Salem a lot of Work has to be done for example they said that the roof has to made new. Anmd for the entire estate that woulsd cost a few Millions €. And they Family don't want to put more Money in it. Last year a Credit from the Banks of about 30 millions € to pay back.

There are too many cousins they could have gone towards the ones who are rich and asked them if their willing to keep the castle and repair it.Then if not that is when they could have sold the castle to someone outside of the family.

Next Star, frankly I doubt there is someone around in the family who can afford the upkeep. But tell me, have you ever seen the premises? They are huge, really huge, including not only the famous boarding school, but a minster as well as several museums & little shops. Also it is an entertainment business, quite a few concerts and other events going on, e.g. yesterday's Bachakademie which presented Schuberts "Unvollendete" or next weeks Home and garden show. And there are famous people performing here. No, not Madonna, but e.g. last year Lang Lang.

Here is a link (unfortunatly in German only) Schloss Salem am Bodensee - Willkommen! But at least you can see the pictures to get an idea what we are talking about.

Please find attached a link to a video on the Schwäbische Zeitung Website:
SZON -

The Government of Baden-Württemberg has asked for an evaluation of the castle-complex. Result: EUR 7 Mio. This is far below the debts of the House of Baden which are amounting to EUR 30 Mio. Wait and stay tuned for the next round in the sale of Salem

BTW in spite of the fact that the video is in German there are some nice views of the place.

I was mentioning other options that could be taken with this property that is up for sale and none think my ideas will or would work in this kind of situation.I wonder how many people has been interested buying a small or large portion of the castle?
I just have to keep my eyes on what is going on this historic property up for sale.

Avicenna 10-11-2008 05:30 AM

The newspaper article mentions that the family is in negotiations with one private investor.

IMHO there are only few possibilities to use the property, e.g. either as a first class wellness resort or as an academy. A lot of work will be necessary before and it won't be cheap. Converting a part of the complex into luxury appartments isn't really an option. Those apartments would be expensive and truly, those people who could afford them can easily get a lake-view apartment at the same price. Why should they move some 15 km away from the lake just to live within a castle-complex? And Salem does not offer this much entertainment honestly. Concerts take place just about 5 times or so per year, ok there is the Schlossseefest and Weinfest ... but hardly anything else. It's remote location probably is a disadvantage. Though it's impressive it might be difficult to find a working option for it. :ermm:

HGDH Prince Leopold Max Christian Ludwig Clemens Hubert of Baden DOB October 1st, 1971

Does anyone have any info on the above Prince?

Im interested in learning more about him, and his family.

Does anyone know of any books that relate to the "current" family?

Kind Regards
Nick

Avicenna 10-13-2008 08:22 AM

Nick, Sorry, other than the wikipedia information Maximilian, Margrave of Baden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , which shows that he is the third child, I do not know of any other source. The official site of Schloss Salem does not offer any insight into the family as you might like to check out yourself: Schloss Salem am Bodensee - Willkommen! (unfortunatly in German only, I am afraid).

And books on the current family ... I am not aware there are any. The last family member who was portrayed is (up to my knowledge) Prince Max von Baden, who died in 1929.

You might find many newspaper articles on the family on the website of the Südkurier (local newspaper: www.skol.de) as well as on the website of the Schwäbische Zeitung ( www.szon.de ) However, these sites are available in German only.

Sorry for not being able to help more.

suedkurier.de | Geteilte Ansichten über Kaufidee

My apologies for late posting. This one is again on the sale of Schloss Salem. The prime minister of Baden-Würrtemberg Oettinger wants to buy the castle complex finally. According to the mayor of Salem a sale might be possible before year end. The estimated earnings-value of EUR 5,4 Mio. is considered too low for the historical importance is not recognised in it.

Avicenna 10-31-2008 05:53 AM

suedkurier.de | Heikles Thema bald vom Tisch

Baden-Württemberg prime minister Oettinger does not doubt an agreement. He did not comment the published offer amounting to Mio. 23 EUR which some newspapers have reported this week. Last open points are to be presented to the Baden-Württemberg cabinet on Monday. The remaining open items don't seem to be of high importance and everything is suppossed to be finalised within the next few days ...

Stefan 11-04-2008 02:08 AM

Just heard on the Radio

They have finally found a solution. The country Baden-Württemberg will buy Salem Castle for 58 Millions €. The Family will therefore renounce on their possible rights at the Handwritings and other historic Items which Ownership ist not cleared and also not go to Court.

First article: https://www.swr.de/swr1/bw/nachrichten/-/id=1000258/nid=1000258/did=4053276/12x5tv/index.html
The part where the Margrave and his wife live will not sold.

Avicenna 11-04-2008 07:18 AM

suedkurier.de | Schlosskauf im Schweinsgalopp

And here is some more info on the deal on the Südkurier-Site.

Finally they are negotiating an amount of over EUR 60 Mio., included is an immediate help for roof-maintenance amounting to EUR 4,5 Mio.

19,8 Mio. for the site
17 Mio. for the art treasures
6 Mio. for the socalled Prälatur (without the part where the Margraf is living)
15 Mio. for the assignement of claims (whatever this is supposed to be ...)

plus 4,5 Mio. maintenance of the roof

However, there is still oposition: the green party was obviously suprised by the overall amount and vetoed, the Baden-Württemberg Prime minister Oettinger still needs to discuss the issue with the other parties in order to obtain their approval. Also the amounts are yet to be confirmed.

.

This is for the rights at the handwritings and other historical items where it was never cleared up what belongs to the Country and the Family.

Harold 11-04-2008 09:54 AM

So it looks like the Royal Family will still have some rights to part of the castle? If so, they might as well re-establish the monarchy and let the royals go to work for the Land!

Thanks, Stefan, for the clarification.

Please find attached a interview with Bernhard Prinz von Baden on the sale:
suedkurier.de | ?Für uns fällt eine große Last weg?

On a sidenote - it was carried prior to upcoming rumours that the christian decmocratic parliamentary group would not agree on the outcome of the negotiations.

Basically what Bernhard says is that he is happy and glad for the result and that he does not consider the amount too high. After all the family has invested a lot during the last years into the site. If he compares the EUR 30 Mio. the Baden-familiy has spent to the EUR 92 Mio. which have been spent on the castle in Ludwigsburg, which is smaller, he believes the family has acted wisely and forward looking.

Jo of Palatine 11-06-2008 11:59 AM

My problem with the deal is that the Baden-family is going to keep 3.500 sqm for their own usage - are they paying rent for it? Or will the palace be devided legally, so they have to pay for the upkeep by themselves? I didn't find more information about that.

This part will not be sold and they keep ownership like an appartement.
This is was i understand Prime Minister Oettinger said. And the Country Baden-Württemberg will have the first right to buy it.

The FAZ reports today that Prinz Bernhard of Baden had to give way to one major item: he will be one of five members of an advisory committee instead of working as a general manager. The German environmental party - the socalled Greens - agrees on Monday to the budget authorisaton of the deal whereas the Social Democratic Party still opposes it. In particular they decline that fact that so far details of the deal have gone through the nonpublic finance board. The parliament will obtain full information in March only.

update sale of castle

Yesterday's Südkurier reported on the estimated maintenance which will be carried out during the next 25 years : EUR 47 Mio.

Thereoff in the next ten years EUR 20 Mio. will be spent. However, a part of this is necessary to separate the private and the public part in the so called Prälatur.

suedkurier.de | 47 Millionen für Sanierung Salems

Today there was another article on the sale of the castle. The agreement is expected to be signed March 19, 2009. On a sidenote it mentions that the Baden-Württemberg minister of finance took part in the YSL auction and won 2 small tables for a mere EUR 91 000. Now that reeeaaaallly is a bargain!!!!
