How to make avatars, a short tutorial.

10 Attachment(s)
A short tutorial then... not about GIF images, but about the basic simple icons. I'm using Adobe PhotoShop here, the theory should work well enough in all graphics programmes though the technical stuff might vary.

1. We use the large photo of Ingrid Alexandra: as image 0.

2. The first thing that should be done is to pick out the part of the picture that you want to make an icon of. You can just resize the picture to fit the 80x80, but isn't it more fun to make an artistic statement?

If you keep too much of the picture, and not all of it is essential... well, at max 80x80 you can't afford to let too many other things besides the royal in question be there. So use a marquee to mark what you want to have, then copy and paste it in a new window (or if you have another way, use it in the existing window.)

3. If you have the image that you want to use, now is the time to resize it so that the longest side is 80. It will look something like the first picture. Note: Don't try to enforce 80x80 size unless the picture's sides are all the same length. It will look odd.

4. Since Ingrid Alexandra turned out to be rather blurry after the resize: we use a filter that is called "sharpen" on her. After that she'll look a bit like the second picture. Beware of using the sharpening tool too many times. It won't be pretty, and poor Ingrid Alexandra may not look like herself at all.

5. Now the time has come to maybe do some fancy things. Adding another layer perhaps, with a soft colour? Image 3. Or perhaps not. (This layer thing is really quite useful if you want to create a romantic effect, or something else, also the styles section has plenty of pre-created styles to try out.)

6. Going back to the image we have from 4. the time has come to add perhaps something to frame the picture in. In Adobe Photoshop this can be found in the style section in one of the floating boxes. You'll have to add another layer, and colour it for the style to be affected. Here I add a 1 pt. red border to the image, to fit with Ingrid's apron. There are times when the borders aren't necessary, but there are times when they fit quite well in, to make the picture step a bit more out at us. (Image 4.)

7. Now the time has come to add the dreaded text, if you want it. I really don't recommend doing this before you resize your image, as the text becomes as blurry as you saw the picture get earlier. I write "Cookie" See image 5.

8. The problem now: The text. It doesn't really stand out. For there to be a point to the text, it has to be readable. Something must be done. We change the colour of the text, so that it stands out. It can also be nice to add a border to the text so that it stands even more out, or some special effects. Since the font I was using, while it was a pretty font, didn't really get the message out: I changed it. There are plenty of fonts out there, some are better for making icons than others. Some work well when they're small. Others don't.

And the finished result: Image 6.

This image was easier to work with than many others might have been... it didn't require much cropping, or correcting of faults.

If you have Adobe Photoshop, I'd recommend taking a picture and trying out all the effects there are. You could use the filmgrain filter (Image 7) neon glow (image 8) or the photocopy filter (image 9)

You can get quite many things done.

I hope it helped. Feel free to ask questions, there are plenty of talented avatar-makers out there who might help you.

how do I place avatar?

How I must put avatar under my name, someone can help me please? Where can I find avatar, want someone me a link give? thank you! :p :)

Alexandria 07-07-2005 09:45 PM

This thread has the information to upload avatars that other members have generously taken the time and utilized their creative skills to make: https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...?t=5402&page=1.

Pre-made avatars (that you do not need to save to your computer) can be found here: https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...?do=editavatar.

The collections start with the Belgian royals, but if you use the Avatar Category drop down menu, you will see collections for other royal families, too.

Hope that was helpful! :)

Avatars

I'd like to know why sometimes when I try to upload an avatar that's like 115 x 80 I'm not allowed and I see some avatars that are 160 x 80.

Thanks :)

Avatars here should only be a max of 80x80 pixels. (Except for those of TRF Team Members which are bigger.) The TRF software will not permit avatars larger than this -- hence when you try to upload avatars larger than this it tells you that the size is too big and it cannot be uploaded.

Avatars which are larger than this are strongly discouraged as they can be distracting.

I am not familiar with avatars that are larger than 80x80 -- please let me know whose avatar exceeds this size. Mostly avatars that I've seen of members are this size or smaller.

monaco70s 07-16-2005 06:49 PM

Thanks Alexandria, yes the avatars I've seen 160 x 80 are those of the Moderating team.

Thanks for clearing up my question :D

Little_star 08-05-2005 01:37 PM

I have another query about avatars.

I've been wanting to change my avatar image, and have found after looking on the web that very few pictures fit the 80x80pixel limit.
Do you know of any way of "shrinking" these pictures so that they could be used as an avatar on this site?

thanks.

norwegianne 08-05-2005 01:42 PM

An image programme, like Adobe PS, is probably the best way to alter the size of an image, and retain the quality from before.

Little_star 08-05-2005 01:51 PM

Norwegianne, so I take it the Adobe Reader programe wouldn't be very helpful?

norwegianne 08-05-2005 02:05 PM

Probably not. (She says, without having too much insight into what Adobe Reader can do.)

you'd need a program like Adobe Photoshop to shrink, resize, crop images.

I use Irfan Program, it's very good to resize images.

Maybe a trial, but not the whole programe, you need to buy that. You can check on download.com or tucows.com... Otherwise there are great free picture programs that can do this too, you can find info and downloads at the sites I mentioned.

Avatar questions and issues

I seen several avatars that were just created that I would like to upload and change my avatar to. How do you change them to the newly made ones? Can you just click on it and upload it? If anyone can help that would be great. Thanks kelly1972

BeccaLynn07 11-11-2005 09:54 PM

I'll try to explain...

Right click, and "Save as.." which avatar you like, and save it to your computer

Then go to User CP at the top, (between Roayl Photos and FAQ), then under Settings & Options click "Edit Avatar".

There's three "boxes" (blue outlined areas...a box just sounds less confusing I think), and the first says "Your current avatar"-scroll down the second says "Predefined _________ Royal Family", scroll down past that to the last one that says "Custom avatar", and click to select that.

Now, click "Browse.." and find where ever you saved the avatar and click "Open". Click "Save changes" and that should change your avatar!

I hope that helps....:)

kelly1972 11-12-2005 08:29 PM

Thanks Beccalynn 07 I really appreciate the explanation. I'll give it a try.

You're welcome. :) I hope it works for you!

Queen Mary I 11-13-2005 02:57 AM

Well I'm sure doing something wrong. I still don't see my avatar.

Edited to ask - Or do I have to wait until a certain amount of posts??

Elspeth 11-13-2005 03:09 AM

You should be able to see your avatar immediately. There are no requirements in terms of post number or length of membership.

I see it in the 'edit avatar' options along with many other avatars but not under my Username. :( I tried deleting it so as not to use up bandwidth, I tried using my own websites URL, and I tried to upload from the computer-still nothing. I'll figure it out one of these days.

I've tried for hours but I still can't figure out what is wrong. I haven't had at problem including an avatar by my Username on other boards. :/

BeccaLynn07 11-13-2005 04:12 PM

Did you perhaps not click "Save changes" at the bottom?....

I'm sorry my explaination didn't help you out, Queen Mary I....:(

kelly1972 11-13-2005 10:19 PM

Queen Mary 1, try to upload your avatar again. What I did was click open when I found the avatar I saved on my computer then save changes. It worked for me. Thanks again BeccaLynn 07 I love my new avatar.

kelly1972 11-13-2005 10:24 PM

I'd love my new avatar if I could see it in my posts. It shows on the user CP as being there but.....it doesn't show on my posts. What's wrong. I would appreciate anyones input. Thanks kelly1972

Please do not apologize! I appreciate all suggestions! :)

I'm still not seeing 'myself' LOL! ;) One of these days..This is a long shot but perhaps the function will only work for the avatars in the gallery? Or perhaps my avatar option has to be 'enabled' by an administrator?

I just read the 'TRF Members Create Avatars' thread
https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...tars-7185.html

Perhaps the 'technical glitches' that are mentioned in the thread are still there? It seems so since at least a few of us seem to be having the same problem.

Ok I just clicked on one of the late Diana, Princess Of Wales avatars just to test it out. I can see it.
I think this proves my theory that only the avatars that are in the gallery can be used.
I love Diana muchly but I prefer a Queen Mary I avatar.

I went back to the gallery and it seems when one uploads a custom avatar-there is no button to click on to in order to 'keep' that avatar. The Save option doesn't seem to do the trick. The avatars already in the gallery have a blue button to click on to. The uploaded Custom avatar, or one added by URL does not have a blue button to Click onto. There is one to the Right of the uploaded Custom avatar but it is the 'Do Not Use Avatar' option.

I have tried everything and I don't usually have a problem with avatars on other forums. Well, I'll just keep Diana for now. :)

What happened to your previous avatar? What you seem to have done is taken out the old one, and replaced it with nothing.

In User CP, Edit Avatar, have you clicked "use custom avatar" (meaning one of your own)?, then 'Browse', ie select from "my pictures" or whatever on your PC, then 'save changes'?
At what point is it failing?
Have you tried using a TRF avatar from the gallery? What happens?
So many questions!

BeatrixFan 11-23-2005 11:36 AM

Well, I tried to change my previous avatar and it shows up in my CP as changed but it doesn't show up on the forums. I'll have a poke around and see what I can find out. The TRF avatars don't work for me either.

I'm going on the conspiracy theory. But its probably that I've broken something. I'm a bad boy.

These problems appear to be related to Andy's new software upgrades and they should be resolved once Andy is done. Meanwhile, please use the avatars from the TRF avatar gallery as it is still functional. Thank you very much for your patience and please bear with us until Andy completes the necessary upgrades and maintenance.

I don't want to turn this thread into a "me-too-story" but it seems to be a general problem, for I failed uploading an avatar either. I see my avatar picture in my CP but not on the forums. It would have been my first avatar ever and I hope this problem will get fixed soon. I'd love to have a nice avatar like so many others here ...

It appears that the avatar-uploading problem is standard across all vBulletin Message Boards and is an unintended result of the latest vBulletin software upgrade.

Unfortunately this means the problem can't be resolved from the TRF end, and requires a vBulletin software fix.

Thanks everyone for your (continuing) patience. We all want this problem resolved as soon as possible.

Thank you for the update. I tried again today but still no luck. At least the problem is software upgrade-and not my computer like I thought! Hopefully it can be resolved soon but in the meantime I'll play with the avatar gallery. :)

Warren 01-04-2006 08:30 AM

Try this...

I picked this up elsewhere. I think it refers to when the avatar is showing in 'Edit Avatar' in the User Control Panel, but not in posts on the Board.
Give it a try if you are having this problem, and see if it works.

Warren

Press or click the refresh button while holding the shift and ctrl key together, then the avatar will download from internet instead of from internet cache stored on the computer.

This is how I found them, there is no context apart from a problem with custom avatars.
I think it means that when you have loaded the custom avatar and it is showing in the User CP, but not in a post, go back to User CP and try pressing/clicking these buttons. The logic is that the avatar is loaded, but not showing. This instruction is an attempt to lock the avatar in by loading it from a different part of the internet storage space. I'm not technical so I can't explain it any better.

I don't know if it will work; I thought it worthwhile to give it a go. It is a vBulletin problem; there may (or may not) be a work-around.

Just be careful to only press the 'Save changes' button once.
When you press 'Save changes', the screen refreshes but takes you back to the bottom where the 'Save changes' button is displayed.
If you press 'Save changes' again, you actually undo what you have done, and receive an error message.

Gladys 01-07-2006 06:14 PM

I guess it's not only a vBulletin problem but also seems to depend on the settings of the computer. I got the impression that for some members it's possible to change custom avatars and for some it's not. So we still have to hope for the software fix.

BTW the refresh/shift/control-thing didn't work for me either ...

Warren 01-08-2006 01:18 AM

I know technical problems can be very frustrating, and not being able to upload one's personal avatar is disappointing.
However, there are a huge number of ready-made avatars to be browsed over 19 pages here.

I've uploaded a personal avatar from my computer.

The initial uploading process poses no problem, however, the avatar does not show up.

At least I don't see it.

Do you?

Could this be a faulty board setting or is it just my personal computer that's acting funny?

Thanks.

This problem is being discussed later in this thread:

https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...tars-7899.html

It appears to be a general vbulletin problem since the last upgrade. The owner of this board is still working on some of these residual problems; in the meantime, please feel free to help yourself to an avatar from one of the galleries.

I have an avator selected and it showed up on my posts for a little while and now it doesnt... What should i do to fix this problem?

Elspeth 01-27-2006 01:11 AM

Probably the best thing to do for the moment is to pick an avatar from one of the galleries while the custom avatars are causing problems for some of the members.

yea its still not working,I am hopin one day to see my avatar :(

Alexandria 02-08-2006 04:08 PM

I was wondering if anyone who has been having problems uploading a customized avatar could try again and let me know any error messages or problems you are getting.

Andy has been working on the avatar gallery and we would appreciate any feedback anyone could give us.

Thanks!

It seems to work now. Without doing anything my avatar now is to see. Thank you for fixing it :)

Alexandria 02-08-2006 08:21 PM

Excellent to hear Gladys! I will let Andy know -- I'm sure he'll be glad to hear that he's fixed the problem, too!

Warren 02-09-2006 04:52 AM

It appears that every "problem post" in this thread now has a visible avatar.
All fixed?

BeatrixFan 02-09-2006 09:34 AM

Nope. My custom avatar still isn't working.

I should have known. :)

BeatrixFan 02-09-2006 12:38 PM

lol. Although, I'm quite happy with my Pierre one at the moment.

Elspeth 02-09-2006 01:15 PM

And, as you can see from her posts, Alexandria's avatar has done a disappearing act too. She says she can't even get one of the gallery ones to stick at the moment.

Andy was working on the system yesterday and apparently didn't quite catch all the bugs.

Meredith 02-10-2006 04:12 PM

I'm not able to get a custom avatar at the moment as well, although the ones in the gallery work fine.

Alexandria 02-10-2006 09:17 PM

Customized avatars redux ... Could everyone who was having problems with a customized avatar please try again?

Earlier in the week I had a customized avatar, then Andy worked on things and I lost my customized avatar. But now Andy is working on things again and I have my customized avatar back.

So, I am wondering if during Andy's last visit, those who were able to finally upload a custom avatar (when I lost mine) might have lost those capabilities in today's fix up session.

Or, the best case scenario: Everyone can upload a custom avatar if they so choose.

Feedback is important to help resolve this issue, so the more the better!

Thanks for your understanding and patience.

BeatrixFan 02-10-2006 09:25 PM

Still nothing. But now everyone knows where I live.

Andy R 02-10-2006 10:29 PM

What error are you getting? Please copy and paste.

Thanks,

Andy

Yes, "London" is such a giveaway! We'll be knocking on your front door before you know it. Anyway, haven't you moved yet? :)

There's no error. The custom avatar uploads perfectly, it just doesn't appear anywhere but in the Control Panel - not in my profile nor in my posts.

HRH Kerry 02-11-2006 11:10 AM

Let me tell you how my morning has been so far:

fell out of bed:confused:
brushed my tooth
washed my face
tripped down the last three stairs:mad:
burnt my fingers on the toaster:mad:
scalded my tongue while sipping my coffee:mad:
logged on to TRF:)

My avatar just appeared!!! Hurrah!!!!!!:p

It's going to be a glorious day!:D :D

I've had that same problem before, then I just decided to switch to the avatars offered by this site. I'll still try to replace it by my customized avatar and see if it'll appear.

Same for me.

Elspeth 02-11-2006 12:54 PM

Consider it changed.;) Lazy git.:D

Do you have a custom avatar loaded at the moment? In the admin control panel I don't see any sign of an avatar.

Meredith 02-11-2006 01:39 PM

Just uploaded my custom avatar and, as you can see, it's not there (though it is at my control panel)

Thanks Elspeth - I feel honoured. I'll check but I did upload an av. I'll try again.

Elspeth 02-11-2006 02:26 PM

Well, there's no sign of avatars in your profiles (I checked both Meredith and BeatrixFan) in the Admin control panel, so obviously something isn't working.

Where are you hosting the avatar images?

BeatrixFan 02-11-2006 02:31 PM

Imageshack. I'll try uploading it but it's definately showing for me.

BeatrixFan 02-11-2006 02:32 PM

Nope. Even uploaded it doesn't work.

Elspeth 02-11-2006 02:42 PM

Well, according to the vbulletin troubleshooting board, a lot of boards are having a problem with custom avatars; the vbulletin people are more or less saying that it must be the boards' problems, as far as I can see. There are some instructions to try and get round it, but I think Andy's the only one who can implement them, so I'll give him a shout. See if that helps at all, although judging from the vbulletin board, it may not.
