Here an article from Terra, which clarifies that the King hasn't competed in the Nautical Sail today because of the death of the king Fahd.
https://actualidad.terra.es/articulo/html/av2430008.htm

The King will travel this week to Riyadh to give his condolences to Royal Saudi Family

The King Juan Carlos will travel this week to Riyadh to express to the royal Saudi family his condolences for the death of the king Fahd and to greet the new king Abdala bin Abdelaziz, reported today someone of the House of the King.

The exact date of don Juan Carlos' trip to the capital of Saudi Arabia will be known in the next hours, after the royal Saudi house fixes the protocol after the funereal honors of the dead monarch, which will be celebrated tomorrow.
Don Juan Carlos, when he received the prime minister, Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, in Marivent's Palace today, was wearing a black tie as a sign of duel for the death of his friend.

Because of the same reason, the King decided today not to embark in the 'Bribón' to take part in the Nautical Sail Cup celebrated in Majorcan waters.

In the telegram of condolence sent today by don Juan Carlos to the royal Saudi family, the Spanish monarch was emphasizing ' the narrow links of affection and friendship ' that were joining him with the king Fahd.

"Friendship between King Juan Carlos and King Fahd marked the relation between both monarchies"

The personal friendship between King Juan Carlos and King Fahd marked the relation between the monarchies of Spain and Saudi Arabia, and the strong affection bonds created by both monarchs were reflected in the many meetings that they had along with their families in Marbella, Madrid and Ryadh.

Therefore, King Juan Carlos received with "great sorrow" the news of King Fadh's death. They last met in a private meeting in October 2002 at Nahda Palace (Arabian word for "dew") , one of the estates owned by the Saudi Arabian king in the Costa del Sol.

Besides having meetings with King Fahd in Marbella, where he used to go by helicopter from his summer residence in Palma de Mallorca, King Juan Carlos, accompanied by Queen Sofia, travelled to Saudi Arabia in several occasions, being the first one a State Visit in 1977.

Two years later, in 1979, King Fahd presented King Juan Carlos the yacht Fortuna as a gift, a boat that was handed over to the Spanish Cultural Heritage in 1981. King Juan Carlos, as Head of State, used the yacht for ten more years, making a great show of a hobby that he shared with the Saudi monarch.

Prince Felipe made a three-day official visit to Saudi Arabia in year 1999, in which he delivered a letter written by King Juan Carlos in which the Spanish king prayed for the further strengthening of both families, governments and peoples' ties.

On the other hand, the then prince Abdala Bin Abdelaziz traveled to Spain in 1997.

Prince Salaman, brother of the now defuncted King and governor of Ryadh, visited Madrid in 2002 and represented the Saudi Royal Family at the wedding between Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia.

zarzuela 08-03-2005 10:05 PM

It's official, King Juan Carlos will travel to Saudi Arabia next Friday.

Special celebrations in the thirty anniversary of the enthronement of Don Juan Carlos by desire of Moncloa

The commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the arrival of Don Juan Carlos to the throne will not happen inadvertent but that, on the contrary, will be an outstanding official celebration. According to Moncloa has known to the Confidential Digitalis, has been specially interested in that thus it is.

In agreement with the sources consulted by ECD, the possibility of organizing some celebration it was checked discreetly from the Zarzuela and one was with one cold welcome on the part of the Congress of the Deputies and their president, Manuel Marín.

Before that situation, one thought not to raise plus the subject, but he was then when the Moncloa took part, that was added immediately and with great interest to the idea, offering all its collaboration and initiative. Behind that disposition he is the president of the Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Considering that the anniversary is fulfilled next the 22 of November, preliminary contacts between Zarzuela and Moncloa have taken place, to be advancing in the calendar, at the moment still very in phase of rough draft. But what is clear it is the will of the Government of not letting pass this occasion to recognize the paper of the monarch in these thirty years of the history of Spain.

The king asks for the "extreme nationalisms" all the politicians to whom he receives

The king is worried - there is it been all these years and it now seems that a little by the implantation of the "extreme nationalisms" and its every time greater right to exercice civil rights and influences more in our country. And it it has returned to put of relief these last weeks, with the politicians with whom it has been met.

They tell him more to the Informer who Don Juan Carlos interrogates, to all the politicians who receives, by the formation political nationalistic radicalized, whose activity and positions can have consequences in the configuration of the State.

It did it, for example, in the last offices with the president of the Government. The king asked Rodriguez Zapatero for the possible pacts of the Socialists with the Basque Nationalistic Party (after knowing the approach the PSOE the PNV), and also for the situation and present expositions of Republican Esquerra of Catalonia, partner of the tripartite one. The same it made Don Juan Carlos in the hearing to Emilio Perez Touriño in Palm, with occasion of to be chosen president of the Xunta of Galicia. One was interested in how it is and as it thinks the Galician Nationalistic Block, as well as - by supposed by the pacts of government signed with them by the PSdeG and its consequences.

In addition to the possible visit of the Pope to Spain, the Kings commented that they also talked with Benedict XVI about the present and future of the Royal Family, with special reference to the child of the Princes of Asturias, whom the Pontiff affectionately called "the creature".

I also like what Sofia is wearing. I think that looked not so strange than the mantilla, straight because it was a personal audience.

The Kings invite to Benedicto XVI to travel to Valencia the next month of august.

September of size of the text columns to give to your opinion Pope Benedicto XVI could visit Spain the next summer in the occasion of Encuentro the International of the Family, who will be celebrated the next year in Valencia. The Pontiff "was not to opposite" the invitation trasmitida by King Juan Carlos during the hearing that Gandolfo celebrated with the Kings in the Castel castle, according to affirmed the own monarch. His predecessor, Juan Pablo II, had announced his presence in the congress that will take place in August. During "a relaxed and warm" encounter, in words of Don Juan Carlos, in whom Benedicto XVI was "open, likeable, very alive and affectionate", the Pontiff received the invitation made by the president of the Government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, and the president of the Valencian Community, Gerald Camps. During half an hour, the Kings talked with the Pope in the library of the Pontifical Palace, in which it was the first hearing, of "deprived" character, according to it has described Santa Sede, who Benedicto XVI celebrates with the maximum representatives of a Real House. The Kings arrived at Castel Gandolfo directly from the airport from Ciampino, where the Spanish airplane of the average Air Force in which they returned to Spain shortly before the twelve and of the noon landed. There they waited for the ambassador to them of Spain before Santa Sede, Jorge Dezcallar, and the undersecretary of Outer Subjects, Bald Luis, and by Vatican part archbishop Luigi Travaglino, Apostolic Nuncio, and by the head of the Spanish Section in the First Section of the Secretariat of State, Miguel Huguet Ameller. The greeting of the Pope to its Spanish guests took place to the doors of the Library of the Pontifical Palace, at where the Kings arrived accompanied by the Prefect of the Pontifical House, the archbishop James Harvey, who had given the welcome them to the Papal residence. Second encounter Era this one the second time that the Kings of Spain kissed the ring of Benedicto XVI, since the past 24 of April attended in the Seat of San Pedro, in preferred place, to the solemn ceremony with which until then cardinal Joseph Ratzinger it initiated his Pontificado. After the greetings, the Pope invited the Kings to accompany to the interior of the Library of Castel Gandolfo to him, where, seated around an office table, the hearing was celebrated. Without the ceremony and the protocol that surround the hearings by the Pope in the Vatican, its encounter with the Kings served so that Don Juan Carlos transmitted to Santo Padre the invitation to visit Spain. The conversation, according to a spokesman of the Real House, turned around the possible visit to our country and on "the real family future present and". Also they engaged in a dialog on the recent trip from the Pontiff to Colony for the World-wide Days of Youth. The Kings could verify the great knowledge that Benedicto XVI has of Spain, country that has visited in numerous occasions, before being Pope, and that Don Juan Carlos trusts to receive to him as rapidly as possible. "it has been a wonderful visit, in which the Pope has been very opened and likeable", they agreed in describing it the Kings, whom they flattered to the Pontiff with a facsimile of the "Code of the Devout one of San Millán of the Cogolla", as century X, written in mozárabe and Romanesque. He gave to rosaries and footpaths to them medals of the Vacant Seat.

Yeah, I tohught the same thing... well, I heard that the Pope speaks Spanish so maybe they should have spoken Cervantes's language. The Queen speaks perfect German, and the King perfect Italian so this is quite an interesting situation isn't it?

*SofiaM* 09-06-2005 05:21 PM

I read that the conversation was mainly in Italian and if the Queen can't speak it, how did she know what was happening

Well, it's not that difficult for a Latin speaker to follow a conversation in Italian... it's harder to speck (and that she probably did in German, since she masters it), but one can perfectly listen to Italian and understand the meaning of it...

You're right, it's easy to understand an Italian conversation when you speak Spanish and French, just like the Queen... so I guess she figured out easily what the Pope and the King were talking about.

*SofiaM* 09-07-2005 05:23 AM

hmm.. i suppose so. Thanks for explaining Elsa M and Zarzuela. I haven't yet mastered the spanish language even though i'm living here, so I wouldn't know :)

Elise27 09-07-2005 09:18 AM
