The above article is about King C-G and Queen Silvia visiting a local flee market at Öland.
The headline is "Carl Gustaf makes a bargain at the King of flee markets" The photo and the article is due to a coincidence. A visit by a journalist from the local little newspaper who was there to write about the increased interest for flee markets.
The King and Queen Silvia was looking for some things for their hunting lodge in Ottenby. They bought things for SEK 500 kr including an antic waffle iron and some plates of porcelain and vases. The King himself didn´t pay, a servant did.

I was going to say that I followed Swedish football to a point but I don't remember the name of Ingemar Stenmark. Wrong sport and I hope he never wore THAT when he participated in his sport. It just goes to show that I don't follow skiing. Well, I do know some names.

Queen Silvia attended the opening and visited the whole of the exhibition afterwards. Queen Silvia opens great earthenware exhibition A unique exhibition of earthenware (faience) objects from the countries around the Baltic Sea was opened at Stockholm's Nordiska Museeet (Nordic Museum) on Wednesday. Queen Silvia headed the opening ceremony and toured the entire exhibition, taking great interest in the many rare objects. The event was presented by Christina Mattsson, the manager of the museum. In the beginning of the 18th century there were about 40 ceramic factories in the Baltic countries, the oldest of them were Store Kongensgade in Denmark and Rörstrand in Sweden. Others were e.g. Eckernförde and Kiel Slesvig-Holstein and Herreböe in Norway and Stockelsdorf in Reval (Tallinn). Among the 140 objects are a large dish from Kunstindustrimuseet in Copenhagen, a centrepiece from Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg and a rare piece from Rundales Pils Muzejs in Lettland. symbolizing earth and water. The exhibition will go further to Kadriorg Palace in Tallinn, Estland in 2004.

Yennie ... any idea what the name of their dog is, and how many they've had ?
All I know, is that they have Black Lab's.

Yennie 10-23-2003 06:18 AM

Well, I know of a few of them. The dog in the picture above is probably Ali, (or Charlie as they later had to rename him after some controversy)
Victoria had a dog when she was little, a king spaniel(?) called Sissi.
Then the king has had some lab´s, the current one is called Dino I think...

and then there is princess Lilians dog Jambo aswell =)

A bit of history ... King Carl Gustav was very vocal about anti-sealing campaigns until he (or the state) was told to butt out by the Canadian Government ... early in his reign. I imagine at that time (and for a long time thereafter) he nor his family showed fur. But fur has been "haute couture" in Europe for the longest time, and obviously its "safe" now for the Queen to wear fur in public.

But, you're probably right, its the coat of very old animals that has been re-stitched.

Dennism 11-13-2003 10:21 PM

She'd be wise not to come to the US and wear it though.

Does anybody (swedes?) know, about what this sketch was?

Dennism 11-16-2003 04:01 PM

Let me practice my Swedish then!

Carl Gustaf and Silvia(That was easy) are a rough pair!(Strav-----Strav is rough or severe or not smooth.. It's a compound but I don't know the second part. ).
as part of it all up to and including at(or during) drinking. But "Drinken" is a noun. Plural noun from "Drink". O, well. Jag forsokte... fagelvagen bortom min fonster.

Lena 11-16-2003 04:04 PM

Thank you for the try Dennism, but this text belongs to another picture (in which the king is holding a glass, and Silvia is drinking with a straw out of this glass.)

Alexandria 11-16-2003 04:28 PM

I think the woman on the left in the tank-top style pink dress is supposed to be Queen Silvia and the woman on the right in the long-sleeved dress is supposed to be CP Victoria.

Is this a picture from a play or comedy troop or something similar?

Dennism 11-16-2003 04:42 PM

Straw! Good grief. I'd never would find that word in a regular text book or a simple language book. It's not one of the first words you would learn!

IIRC, it was taken in the late 1970s, during the state visit of the Icelandic President (you can tell by the Sash). The same picture was published in a PdV profile on Queen Silvia and her Jewels back in March/April of 2000. I have it in my collection, although it is not full length either.

Great pictures of Queen Silvia, Dennism!

Here is one more terrific photo of the Queen. Love this colour on her! Makes that brown (mahogany?) hair of her's really stand out.

I think the king missed his queen at the sportsgala. His looks kind of lonely and lost...In a way he always does when she isn't by his side. I think it's VERY cute !

Dennism 01-22-2004 05:44 PM

No doubt. He tries and tries to show a happy face but he must miss her at these events.

That's a look I've seen many times from Annika. She's looking at the lie and trying to figure out how to putt or how to hit it out of the deep rough.

I gather Kofi's wife is Swedish. I wonder how 'well connected' she is with the Swedish RF?

Dennism 01-30-2004 01:39 AM

Don't know. She surely knows Silvia. She is involved with the various children programs at the UN. She and Kofi were at Willem and Maxima's wedding as well. From a UN site:

"Nane Annan was born in Stockholm, Sweden. She trained as a lawyer and worked for many years in the public sector. After receiving a law degree from Stockholm University in 1968, she entered the Swedish Court System, becoming an Assistant Judge at the Administrative and Fiscal Court of Appeal in Stockholm in 1975. On leave from the Court, she assisted in legislative projects as Assistant Secretary of the Swedish Parliamentary Aliens Act Commission (1976-1981) and as expert of the Swedish Commission on Ethnic Prejudice and Discrimination (1979-1980). In 1981, she joined UNHCR Geneva as a Legal Officer until 1983 when she moved to New York.

Since 1985 she has been painting full time for several years in two New York institutions - the Art Students League and the Studio School. She has participated in a few group exhibitions, two benefiting UNICEF and one at United Nations premises in Germany. In 1996 she joined the board of Women's International Forum, which provides a forum for discussion on international relations, particularly in regard to the United Nations.

The election of her husband as Secretary-General of the United Nations in December 1996 has brought about dramatic changes in both their lives. Although she is pursuing her interest in art, she is focusing on women's issues, also in regard to programmes designed to alleviate poverty, and the welfare of children and refugees. However, given her and her husband's sudden loss of anonymity, she finds it important to provide a retreat into a private world for both of them as well."

Queen Silvia reminds me of Eugenie de Montijo y Guzman. Both seem to have a limitless supply of gorgeous dresses and gowns. Empress Eugenie dressed for political reasons and to keep luxury industries going. She really wasn't all that interested in fashion and dress from what I've read. Maybe Silvia is dressing the part and isn't enthusiastic about dress. But if that's the case, she's sure fooled me!

loving silvia and carl gustaf 04-08-2004 11:42 AM

well....can you maybe post some of those pictures?...because I tried to get to see them, but the computer cept saying that I had to log in first...so pleeeeease help...I would really loooove  to see those pictures! Kamilla ;)

Translation from article in the national Swedish newspaper Expressen, 8 April:

Picture: loading the elephants

The King’s elephants have landed!

Sanoi and Bua were about to cause a diplomatic crisis. Last night The King’s elephants came to Sweden.
- This is great. I have been nervous for weeks, says Mats Höggren, Animal Director at the Kolmården Animal Park.

It was a long trip for the two six- and seven years old elephants. Around five AM yesterday morning they took of by plane from Bangkok in Thailand. At a stop in Frankfurt, the animals were loaded onto an especially charted Herkules plane. Last night at two PM they came to Norrköping Airport.
- They seem calm and nice. Now we can relax, said Mats Höggren, Animal Director at the Kolmården Animal Park last night.
- Elephants are so special and magnificent animals. They put high demands on us. Those we are going to live up to.

But Sanoi and Bua’s home will have to wait. The elephant females were taken directly into quarantine in an industrial area in the outskirt of Norrköping. King Carl Gustaf received the elephants as a gift by the Thai King Bhumiol during a visit in the country last year.

Kolmården approved.
But it was for long not clear whether the gifts could be received by Sweden. After long discussions – that were about to cause a diplomatic crisis – Kolmården Animal Park was approved by the Thai Minister for Culture as their new home.

On 1 May, the elephants will arrive at the park. That day The King and his family will visit the park to welcome their new “pets”.

Queen Silvia looks lovely. For some strange reason, she reminds me of Caroline von Monaco. If I were to see them both in the streets, then I'd swear they were mother and daughter.

You see, don't they look like mother and daughter? Oh my, they both have the same nose, hair color, and skin complexion.

irishchic5 04-09-2004 08:26 AM

They do look similair, but I think Sylvia and Victoria look more alike. When I look at pictures of Sylvia, sometimes I see Jackie Kennedy, especially as she got older. I definitely see it in those last two pictures with Caroline of Monaco.

Lena 04-09-2004 08:29 AM

Yes, they look very much alike...but I would rather say they look like elder sister and younger...Queen Silvia looks in spite of her 60 years much younger, and in the last years IMO Caroline aged a lot (smoking?!)...and Caroline is only 13 years and 1 month younger than Queen Silvia...

Lyle 04-09-2004 08:30 AM

The pictures of Silvia and Caroline are almost freaky to me...they look so much alike. I think that they look much more alike than Silvia and Victoria. In my opinion, that Silvia and Caroline look so similar just goes to show how young Silvia still looks for her age!

Picture 8 is fantastic! Now I know where Victoria got her ability to make faces from.

Look at Silvia's facial expression and keep an watch for pictures of Crown Princess Victoria who makes some of the funniest faces I've ever seen captured in a photograph or image. Its almost as if no set of pictures of CP Victoria is complete without a funny face-picture of her. :flower:
