Late maternal grandfather of Queen Anne of Romania. Anne's mother was the only daughter of Valdemar and his wife Marie of Orleans.

Valdemar and his wife had an interesting marriage agreement, when he married a RC. Their sons would be raised Lutheran and daughters RC. Margaret was the first Danish princess since the reformation raised catholic. She married Prince Rene of Borbon-Parma, the younger brother of Prince Felix (husband Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg), Empress Zita, and Xavier (his son Carl Hugo married Princess Irene of the Netherlands) among others.

Was it ever established or discovered who actually murdered King Eric V?

Not really. And that's why this is to this day still one of the most intriguing murder cases in Danish history.
In fact I have often toyed with the idea of writing a longer post about this medieval mystery.

But there seems to be a general tendency among historians to point the finger at the one who stood to gain most by the murder of Erik Klipping (as he is known in DK) that was another member of the extended DRF family; Duke Valdemar of Slesvig & Holsten.
But alas, the whole assassination plot backfired, and it led to quite a good deal of political chaos, so much chaos in fact that this ended up being the last assassination of a Danish king in Danish history. There seems to have been a general agreement afterwards saying: Not again!

Yes, that's another odd thing about Danish kings.
If they were murdered or killed in battle they were always buried locally, rather than taken to say Roskilde Cathedral.
That was also the case for Erik Klipping, after his murder, he was buried in the nearby (relatively, he was killed in a barn far away from anything) Viborg Cathedral.

The historians simply don't know why.

She was "only" Princess of Denmark. :flowers: The future Christian VIII was never styled Hereditary Prince.

Was Hereditary Prince of Denmark ever the official title of a Crown Prince of Denmark?

The title has been used two times for heirs that weren't directly descended from the king. The latest and third time it was used it was given to Prince Knud after he lost his position as the first in line to the throne after the change of the constitution in 1953.

Frederick, Hereditary Prince of Denmark had also acted as Regent of the Kingdom on behalf of his half brother, King Christian VII though the realpower lay in the hands of the dowager queen Juliana Maria of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
