Lookalike Gowns

Don't alot of the wedding gowns lookalike, I mean royal wedding dresses. Like Marie-Chantal's, it looks alot like Princess Grace. And Mathilde's and Letizia's, long lost twins.

Interesting point. If you also look at Princess Margaret's dress against her daughter-in-law, Serena Linley, they are very similar as well.

the only similarity between mathilde and letizia's dress is the collar

cute_girl 12-25-2004 11:12 AM

and I forgot to add that i see no similarity between grace and mariah's dresses, only the tops look alike and there are so many dresses like that

i remind about Princess Diana and Sophie-Rhys Jones have same gowns but its almost lookslike gowns i cant believe it!

the similarity of the collars...

liv 12-26-2004 08:27 AM

I think there is absolutely no similarity between Sophie´s and Diana´s dress. Sophie married nearly 20 years after Diana. Diana had this typical 80´s style and it was a very big dress. Sophie had a minor dress with a short train and without Diana´s pomp.

Genevieve 01-01-2005 04:20 PM

I think there are some similarities between Mathilde and Letizia's dresses in that they were both jackets with high collars over sheath dresses underneath them. But there are many bridal gowns that have this look, such as Martha Louise and Sophie's dresses. The difference between Mathide and Letizia's gowns is in the details such as the embroidery in each of their gowns. I believe Letizia's contained a lot of symbols that related to Asturias and those of the royal house as well as symbols of fertility. I am not sure what was on Mathilde's dress jacket.

I think there was absolutely nothing similar between Diana and Sophie's dresses at all. Diana's dress was puffy all around and had layers upon layers of fabric while Sophie's dress was pretty streamlined. The only similiarity is the one picture of both Diana and Sophie looking back on their way up to the church with their veils on.

I read that Serena purposefully chose for her dress to eminate that of her mother-in-law's. It was a nod to Princess Margaret's style and Serena's entrance into the family by carrying on style. A rather nice touch I thought.

azile 01-03-2005 08:06 AM

I read that as well! (Serena respectfully "copying" Margaret's dress)

I also agree that Diana and Sophie's dresses had absolutely nothing in common. The styles, sillouettes, fabrics and embelishments were all COMPLETELY different.

I think that style is a classic. You can see it in old hollywood movies from the 1950s and on brides today. The thing those dresses have in common ofcourse is the see-through or lace top and long sleeves. The bottom part is always different.
Princess Basma's daugther Farah wore a similar dress at her wedding a few months ago.

I agree- there are certainly physical resemblances between Sophie and Diana. There is another thread in the British Royal Family section that compares some of their similar style.

I was just trying to point out that their wedding dresses were not very much alike.

If someone could post a picture of Princess Diana's dress and Mariah Carey's dress, they are almost identical. Mariah told designer Vera Wang to copy Diana's dress b/c she was fasinated by the wedding as a young girl.

Maybe they had a look at all the wedding dresses of all the real life princesses and the actress picked the one she liked most? The design suits the twenty-something character she played.

Fashionista100 01-14-2005 04:27 PM

Many churches have had rules in the past or still have rules about women covering their shoulders for decorum. Since many Kings are the heads of their country's churches, they must abide by more "old fashioned" traditions.

In Christian churches woman (bride and guests) are not permitted to enter bare-shouldered. That is why when Sophie and Edward married in the evening and female guests came in evening attire there was a special mention in the invitation that they wear jackets or shawls over their shoulders. When my sister married last year she specifically wore a jacket over her dress and was subsequently thanked by the priest who said he was sick of bare shouldered brides being disrespectful in his church. This is why all Christian European brides are dressed so modestly. Frankly I think they look much prettier than celebrity brides or many brides one sees in every day life.

Semisquare: I'm not sure if I agree that the wedding dresses were alike...but it certainly seems she copied Diana's hair on her wedding day. What I mean is - Sophie copied the way Diana looked just before her passing, not copying Diana on HER wedding day. I agree, it would be nice if people could be a little bit more inventive. I think finally Sophie has tried to look like herself and not copy Diana - but that's another thread, I guess.

Me too!... Call me conservative if you want, but I always get the feeling that short sleeved wedding dresses are not appropriate for a church ceremony... and it's utter bad taste for a bride (at least a Catholic one) wearing a strappless dress (it's like screaming to the guests: "Look what you're loosing!!" )...

I always think that the wedding gown of the following are similar - it's simply the current popular strapless gown with a lace top over it:
1) Princess Claire of Belgium
2) Princess Anita of Netherlands
3) Princess Pavlos of Greece

Similarly the following are just a strapless gown with a lace bolero jacket (be it short, 3-quarter or long sleeve)
1) Princess Nicholaos of Greece
2) Autumn Philips
3) Princess Marie of Denmark (jacket lookalike)
4) Lady Sophie Windsor

I do not really see why must it be some designers who created them - there's really not much originality & creativity to it - any of us could just have gown in such common design without costing much (I am not talking about the material but design here). Which is why I still prefer the following gowns - unique and most probably you will not see them around us because of the personalised designs and what a true royal wedding gown should be.
1) Queen Elizabeth (A true royal wedding dress for a future queen - the significant symbolic beading)
2) Sarah, Duchess of York (another true royal wedding dress - the significant symbolic embroidery)
3) Princess Letizia (another royal gown with embroidery of heraldic symbols)
4) Princess Maxima (the lace inset)
5) Princess Mary (the origami-alike folds & lace inset)
6) Princess Mette-Marit (the soft flowing of the silk tulle)
7) Princess Mabel (I know the bows looks hilarious but undeniable it is really a very personalised gown)

Absolutely! I also think there is similarity between Catherine's dress and Marie-Chantal's dress, although Catherine's was, for me, far lovelier. And I also think Catherine's dress has a hint of the Queen's and also Margaret's. Her dress was gorgeous, but I must admit that I was severely disappointed in the lack of originality (and, yes, this is only because it was a royal wedding gown...but maybe, like many, she grew up with a Grace Kelly dream dress).

There's was a discussion about similar wedding gowns on Sofia's fashion thread, so I thought I'd continue it here. On first glance, Sofia's dress did remind me of Kate's, but besides the lace sleeves, the gowns are really nothing alike.

It was also pointed out that Isabella Orsini and Kate had very similar gowns. I do see a similarity with the lace (on the sleeves and bodice), but that's where the similarities end. Isabella appears to be wearing a lace jacket and the rest of the dress is plain satin. Also the body of the dress is a lot fuller than Kate's.

I think since a lot of brides want to stick with something classy yet stylish, it's probably hard for designers to come up with original ideas. That's why most royal bridal gowns end up having similar elements. Claire's gown reminded me of Stephanie's. The top half of Princess Cristina's reminded me of Mary's, Letizia's and Mathilde's had similar looks, etc.

:previous: Agree on all fronts! The main point is, that all the white, classic wedding gowns look alike... At first look also, it is not easy to find differences, but when you examine the details you realize each dress is unique... Even lace can have as much as a variety of patterns as you like...:flowers:

I would rather say that Princess Sofia's gown looks similar to the wedding gown of Princess Anita of Oranje-Nassau, van Vollenhoven.

Her gown is incredibly stunning and regal. One of my new favorites. I don't think it looks like Grace's wedding gown. To me, it kind of looks like Maxima's wedding dress.

I find Meghan's wedding dress similar to Queen Margrethe, Maxima, infanta Cristina, and Crown Princess Mary's wedding dresses.

To me, Alana Camille Bunte’s (wife of Prince Casimir of Sayn-Wittgenstein) wedding gown similar to Queen Silvia’s wedding dress.

Agreed. The dress itself looks nothing like Grace's wedding dress. But the head piece is quite similar in concept to Grace's.

But yes, the dress has a similar feel to Maxima's.

I love the dress. But then again I am more the streamlined simple gowns are better boat. I like the simple or more structural gowns like Victoria, instead of the overly lacey sparkly gowns.
