Was she there just to give the exhibit promotion or to learn more about what she is a patron of? JW
Also does it look like she cut her hair?

An article form 'The Telegraph' about the tour of the exhibit. It also states that Catherine will be visiting her other charities and doing a lot of work with them as well as a Scouts troop in Anglesey for the next 6-8 weeks. I love seeing how confident and comfortable Catherine appears, and the fact that she took the time to those who were at the exhibition.

Yes, that is a great shot of Kate with the camera flashes and from what I can see of some photos where her hair is away from her face, she's wearing the art-deco earrings and also the diamond bracelet first seen at the BAFTA gala in LA. And her hair does look a bit shorter; it seems to spring up a little more.

Good solo performance by her.

She looked at ease during this event. I'm hoping that we'll have the opportunity to see her at another solo engagement soon.

PrincessKaimi 02-09-2012 11:37 AM

The Portrait Gallery must be accustomed to special events, and the directors would have much experience in speaking to people about art, all of which eases the event more than (for example) visiting land mine victims. I think she chose her event well - and that it's important she have some fun on her own while William is away.

It's the sort of thing a young woman would want to do anyway, but I wonder how it feels for her that she can't really just pop in during regular hours and have a peek at the Lucien Freud exhibit?

LadyGabrielle 02-09-2012 02:09 PM

Well once again Catherine has done an excellent job. She looked wonderful and she handled her first solo appearance with grace and ease. She is a natural and thank goodness she was prepared and given time to ease into her new role. I think William will be very proud of her. Well done Catherine.

Going for gold! Duchess of Cambridge heralds next week's Olympics by wearing a gold hooped necklace during her visit to the National Portrait Gallery | Mail Online

fandesacs2003 07-19-2012 05:54 AM

She is very pretty. I like her dress so much. Nevertheless, I always feel so insecure when I see her without any bag... even driven by a car, I can not understand how a woman can step out without even not a lipgloss or her mobile phone. Unless she has a bag, which she lets into the car...

Artemisia 07-19-2012 06:23 AM

:previous:
Wherever she goes, and especially on official occasions, Kate is accompanied by an assistant who probably has everything necessary at hand.
It's a bit like the Queen's bag; while Her Majesty is always seen with her trusty Launer bags, her lady-in-waiting carries a much larger brown bag with all necessities.

That's what ladies-in-waiting or assistants are for (probably Rebecca Deacon in Kate's case). Kate's not going to start texting in the middle of an official engagement, or touching up her lipstick (although I seem to remember the Queen doing so at least once on a visit). While I'm sure the Queen keeps a few bits and pieces in her handbag, I'd hazard a guess that her LIWs are carrying more items that might be needed - like a spare pair of tights, for example. Personally, I prefer not to carry handbags, as I feel much more comfortable with both hands free.

The DM article states that Kate wrote her dissertation at St. Andrew's on the photography of Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland. Did we know this already?

Yes we did, somewhere in one of the many, many, many old Kate Middleton threads is a link to a list from St. Andrews for the dissertation topics and results for Kate, William and everyone else that year.

EIIR 07-19-2012 07:17 AM

I must have missed that. It's a very interesting choice, particularly given the controversy about Carroll's tendency to photograph little girls, often in a state of undress. The literary community have long debated Carroll's motives in doing so. Certainly not a 'safe' choice by Kate.

Normal price! They are both very rich by their own.

wow. 49k is definitely lots for a neckless. i wonder if this was a gift by someone or she bought it on her own (maybe it was lent by cartier?). i personally don't find it very appropriate in these economic climate to wear a 49k piece of jewelry so casually, for a daytime event.

appart from that, she looked lovely and the dress was perfect for her.

Cartier have already confirmed the necklace is not a loan, so Kate must have either bought it herself (which seems somewhat unlikely), or it was a gift.
St James Palace spokesman said Kate has had the necklace for a while - which could mean anything from a month, to a couple of years.
I think it is likely the necklace was either a wedding, or 30th anniversary gift from Prince Charles, William, or the Middletons.

fandesacs2003 07-21-2012 03:44 AM

I do not understand this cost discussion again! When we talk about royals we talk about people living a rich life. And in Kates case we have a royal already rich before becoming royal! and married with a very rich royal (pcs Dianas fortune). So where is the problem having an expensive jewellery?

There's nothing wrong with her wearing or having expensive jewellery. But some posters myself included think that £49,000 for the necklace she wore was unreasonable. It's also part of a "discussion" to wonder where it came from. Whilst William and Charles have a lot of money, dropping £49k for one necklace is a bit much IMO.

I don't understand why this only seems to be an issues when it comes to Kate. Like every royals buy their stuff from the Gap

It's not. You can look at every fashion forum and see discussion about the cost of clothing and jewellery. Particularly the CP Mary thread, woman who gets criticised for wearing h&m.

Also GAP clothing whether high street or outlet is not cheap.

dazzling 07-22-2012 04:12 AM

I don't get why it is too much. It might not be much for her or the royal family, if they have access to the wealth then they can spend it on what they like. Who are we to decide if it was good money spent or not. Sooner or later Kate would buy piece to build her own collection with valuable pieces.

Lets remember that Kate doesn't come from a family that cannot afford such a price tag, moreover she married into the royal family who are also able to spend that much.

49K on a cartier necklace might sound cheap for that design if you would compare it other brands such as Harry Winston or Graff which would be selling it for much more.

Maybe there is some truth in her wearing more bling.

Don't care for Kate's locks AT all

linda85 02-11-2014 03:30 PM

Why can t she put her hair up to do justice to glory of that necklace? UGH

wyevale 02-11-2014 03:33 PM

A loose chignon would have been perfect ! The gown, and the necklace are wondeful tho' !

Daria_S 02-11-2014 03:41 PM

I was there, but was pushed back by all the paps. My husband got annoyed, and we ended up leaving right before she arrived. Gah! Patience is indeed a virtue .

An updo would be much better with this amazing gown and this brillian necklace!
I just love this necklace on her, she can pull it off: I mean, look how amazing she looks with such bling-bling jewelry.
I hope she will take this necklace with her to Australia/New-Zealand in April. Love it!

I wonder when she is going to get a hair stylist because it is clear from this look that she doesn't have one. It looks like she didn't even bother to wash her hair - as it looks very greasy. It hasn't been brushed properly.

This woman seriously needs help in the way she dresses and looks as she is a huge failure in these areas.

As a result the entire look is off as we can't see the necklace which should have been clearly visible.

The see-through nature of the dress also means she should have worn a decent petticoat as seeing her legs through the dress isn't appropriate at an official function for the future Queen.

A... A petticoat? Seriously? In 2014?

Should we also have a fainting couch on hand in case she has a bout of hysteria and we need to send for the apothecary?

Lace her into a good corset?

Make sure to talk about the destruction to the family that will occur if women get the vote?

And her hair looks fine and curls like that take a lot of work.

Hardly unstyled. The style may not be to everyone's taste, but she definitely has a hairdresser working on her hair.

That dress is fully lined with a ink.dark blue chiffon overlay. Her legs are not visible IMO

The black lining is obvious in this picture.

The hair was obviously curled for the event but the atmosphere in London is very damp and as she never seems to use hairspray its probably dropped. That said, I'd have preferred an "up-do" but I still think she look good.

TLLK 02-11-2014 04:54 PM

The neckline on the dress compliments the beautiful necklace. I wish she'd worn her hair back to set off the jewelry better. The color is a tried and true favorite of hers.

US Royal Watcher 02-11-2014 05:00 PM

Daria_S, so sorry you didn't get to see her in person, but I hope you will in the future. (Just leave the husband at home, they never understand).

I think she looks good. I love the dress and I wish my husband's grandmother had such wonderful jewelry and was generous with it!

Catherine has lovely hair and wearing it loose is a good look for her. With this particular dress and necklace though I think it would have been even more attractive if she had worn her hair up or even half up.

debrann 02-11-2014 05:36 PM

Catherine's hair style does a great injustice to the Queen's necklace and Kate's earrings, I'm totally over the 'hair around the face thing" yes a loose chignon or half up and half down would have made her look like the princess she is, not a good look Catherine IMO:bang:

Pranter 02-11-2014 05:52 PM

Love the dress! Definately has a lining..can't imagine the DoC going out in public in anything see thru.

I do wish the hair was more up but it's her style, signature style evidently so I suspect we won't often see it up.
