I think that we could have a discussion about Spain State Visits, and what visits do we want to see in the future?

When do you think Leonor and Sofia begin to participate in State banquets to the heads of State who visit Spain? When they do 18 years?

Hello. I decided to create this topic so that we can talk about the next visits of the state that the Kings of Spain will do.
Morocco, Brazil and Peru should be the countries that Philip VI and Queen Letizia should visit in the coming months.
When will the Kings of Spain visit Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium?

Seeing the apparently massive support for the monarchy in the Spain of 1978 and in particular the affection for King Juan Carlos then compared to how lukewarm that same support seems now is sobering.:ermm:

On the contrary, the monarchy is much more established right now, and King Felipe is (and has always been, even when Prince of Asturias) very popular. If the monarchical system fails in Spain it will be despite King Felipe's popularity, even republican leaders have said that Felipe would be an ideal candidate for President and that he would win. (Again, I'm just saying that there are republicans everywhere and despite the apocalyptic views of the Spanish monarchy here there's no major support, either among politicians or the population, to change the system)

In 1978 few people thought the monarchy would survive and Juan Carlos was known in certain political circles as Juan Carlos the Brief. If we're judging support from anecdotal videos and pictures of people greeting the royals, there are certainly many, many photos and videos of the current royal couple greeting adoring crowds.

Presumably at 18 they'll be either at college or at a military academy. I imagine their attendance would depend on exams, homework, where they're studying...Perhaps they'd start attending certain state dinners, for example from another monarchy.

I have no further insights in Spanish state visits and/or politics, and not able to say what countries that are prioritized or not. When it comes to the fellow monarchies I wish they do it in the old-fashioned way, to visit them in the order of precedence (which they kind off have done so far) with the Queen of Denmark being the next guest.

As a Swede of course I hope for a state visit to Sweden soon.

An Ard Ri 07-13-2017 12:06 PM

It will depend by which other monarch they are invited first. I think the King and Queen of NL and the belgian King and Queen would also haved loved to make first a State Visit to Great Britiain before to other monarchies.

Considering the strong Belgium/EU association, I don't see it coming anytime soon, but I think a Belgian state visit to the UK is long overdue. All Belgian kings up to King Baudouin included were knights of the Garter. King Albert II, however, never received that distinction as there was no UK state visit during his reign, neither has so far King Philippe.

Queen Mathilde doesn't have many tiaras, but I think she could handle two tiara nights with the Nine Provinces at the state banquet and Queen Fabiola's Spanish tiara at the Guildhall banquet (which I'm pretty sure she has in her possession, but has not worn yet). Or, maybe Queen Paola will come to her senses and leave the Art Deco bandeau to Mathilde as, after all, it was an heirloom from Queen Elisabeth and Queen Astrid and should stay in the main line of the family. In the worst case scenario, she still has the Wolfers or her Laurel Wreath for the second night, but she would like a very poor queen indeed !

My Guess for state visits for next years.

state visit to
Cuba in January 2018
Morocco March 2018
They also received invitations from Ireland, Brazil, Jordan(was postponed in 2016), South corea(postponed in 2016) and New Zealand. I also think a state visit to Peru,Columbia and Chile might be possible. I could imagine they receive a invitation from Queen Margrethe, she also invited the Dutch and Belgium King and Queen for a state visit.

For incoming state visits im not sure maybe another Latin american Country like El salvador, Panama or Ecuador. A state visit from Portugal and France would be suitable state visit too.

I also think Spain and Germany have a close relationship, maybe a German-Spainish State visit?

An Ard Ri 12-06-2017 08:22 AM

I hadn't heard anything about a State Visit to Ireland, interesting the last one was back in 1986 and King Juan Carlos/Queen Sofia extended their stay with an invitation from the the then Irish late Dr.Patrick Hillery to spend time at his holiday home on the west coast.

Was any explanation given by the Foreign Ministry to justify that decision ?

lula 03-09-2018 09:31 AM

State visits are usually limited to two or three a year, then there may be other types of trips. Cancellations due to own (elections, Catalonia) or other countries (Government problems in South Korea and London, problems of the King of Morocco) problems have been continuous, and this complicates the planning of the agenda, which must also be adjusted to that of the Government.

The Royal House and the Foreign Minister had reserved the first two weeks of March to place the trip to Morocco, which has already been canceled several times, and again there will be no trip.

About the trip to the Winter Olympics, since Spain has little representation in these sports, unless they are held in a nearby place, they do not usually go.

King Juan Carlos now represents the country in the changes of Government in Latin America (role played by Felipe when he was a prince), and that is the reason for his trip to Chile.

Marengo 03-09-2018 09:41 AM

The article does not mention a reason for it, other than the already known reasons for cancelling the visits to Morocco and Cuba.

I suppose that the Catalan issue may be problematic for state visits within Europe. The Spanish will not like to discuss such domestic issues abroad, while the governments of the other country may be forced -by their own political parties- to mention the matter at the state banquet. Perhaps not surprising that they may prefer to evade such a situation for the time being.

I wonder King Felipe and Queen Letizia will make a state visit abroad this year? I can remember there were rumours about a state visit to Denmark but it hink this could happen next year, on the other hand I´ve read they will make a state visit to Argentinia in march 2019. The same question for incoming state visits, I´ve read Macron will visit spain this autumn, and for october/november a state visit from China is planned, and Pedro Sanchez would like to work close with Germany too. (the last German state visit to spain was 2002, last spanish state visit to Germany 1999). I dont think a state visit to Morocco will happen that soon, its a big mess!!

An Ard Ri 06-22-2018 12:21 PM

Though it wasn't a State Visit the Official Trip to the USA was the nearest we've gotten on an outbound visit this year.

Yes a State Visit has def military honours.
I was confused because their visit in 2015 was labelled official, maybe they toured some institutions like the Senate back then.
This time, they only visited the White House and went home.
So yes, I'd call it a Working Visit too.

Why would they attend the meeting of the Order of the Garter? Foreign royals never do with the exception of very special occassions when all foreign knights and ladies are invited (it happened once when Elizabeth celebrated 50 years on the throne if I am not mistaken).

Morocco seems to be difficult and there has been an exchange of PM, from Rajoy to Sanchez, not sure how much impact this change has on the political agenda regarding countries to be visited.
There is a new president in Mexico now, quite certainly he'll come over or invite the Kings to Mexico soon.

In the case the rumours are true i think FL will visit Denmark next spring..

I think the spanish and scandinavian government not really interested in a state visit. I guess its necesseray to invite the other country aka Norway-spain. I think a state visit to Denmark and Sweden are most possible. The last norway state visit was in 2007, Luxemburg 2007, Belgian 2000, Netherlands 2001. I've read China will visit Spain later this year, State Visit not an official one. King Felipe also invited Macron to pay a State Visit but this I don't think will be this year but the next, the next year They will visit to Argentina to the international congress of spanish language I don't know if we will have a state visit. And Morocco, I think this visit has been unofficially cancelled, with their King absent almost the whole year is impossible.

So we could have China, France and Argentina in the next months (the rest of 2018 and the first months of 2019), even Denmark because both goverments have been talking about it the possibility of a Denmark-Spain state visit.

About the State visit to cuba i dont think this will happen soon. PM Sanchez will visit Cuba as soon as possible

" the Government of Mariano Rajoy accepted the invitation, but never specified whether the historic visit would be made by the Kings or if the Chief Executive would go before. And the doubt cleared yesterday, when Pedro Sanchez announced from Washington that he will be the one to visit Cuba on an official trip as soon as his schedule allows it. Diplomatic sources explained that Sanchez had accepted the invitation of his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Diaz-Canel and, to the question of whether Díaz-Canel had also extended an invitation to the Kings for the visit, Sanchez's team's response was: "No" ."

As in the kings of the Netherlands and the kings of Belgium have already made state visits to Denmark, I think it is time for the current Kings of Spain to make their state visit to Denmark. Is it likely a state visit from the Kings of Spain to Denmark next year?

I think its likely Q.Margrethe invited FL for a state visit. But its on the government to accept the invitation and find a possible date. Unfortunatley the recent PM of spain seem to be not interested sending their Majestys abroad, so we have to wait, but Yes i think its possible FL will visit denmark next year in the case they will find a date and its not postponed :ermm:.

Will Morocco ever happen? If so, it will put focus on Lalla Salma being absent at the highest level.

I dont think we will have a state visit to morocco in next months at least not until its official what happened to Lalla Salma. Also with the new PM of spain it was difficult to find a new date for the state visit. I know morooco is one of most important country for spain but I think they should skip the morrocco state visit and plan other state visits like Denmark and so on

wow - such short notice! look forward to it. i hope letizia brings out a heavy-weight tiara for the state banquet, but my guess is that she will tone it down given peru is not a monarchy and a country of more modest means than others she visited on state visit.

Looks like the program hasn't been announced so far. Hope they will not stick to Lima as Peru has so much more to offer.

Probably she won't even wear a tiara in Peru. Chances are the dresscode will be business suit as usual in South American republics.

Peru already had a State Visit in Spain in 2015, its the second country (after Portugal) to have had a State Visit both in Spain and at home.

In 2010 F&L made an official visit to peru the dresscode was suit for men´s and long dress for women, i hope for the same dresscode for the state visit( Im sure she will not wear a Tiara, maybe some earrings of Sofia or joyas de pasar jewels, but im sure thats it)

Sofia just wore Tiaras for state visits abroad in the 70s, as princess and later in the first years of JC reign, she also wore a Tiara for state visit to Austria 1995. I think she always was "mixed up" wearing a Tiara or not , i remember the berleburg wedding she wore no tiara, while other royals wore a tiara the same with state visits, while other Royals "mostly" wore a tiara also for black tie she usually waived. So far leti had just one state visit a tiara was appropriate but she wore no tiara ( Portugal) i hope this will chance for upcoming state visits of course not likely she will change)

It depends very much on the dresscode. When the hosts sets it as business suit, then even a lady with an amazing collection will wear modest jewels. Example: Queen Máxima at the Palais de l'Élysée in Paris. The day after, being the hosts themselves, they had the bar set at black tie and then Màxima wore glittering diamonds at the Petit-Palais. Morale of this story: Doña Letizia has it not in her own hands to pack out with jewels or not, it really depends on the hosts.

At the recent spanish State Visit to Portugal the dresscode was white tie but Letiza still did not wear a tiara apparently becausee Queens Sofia wore them abroad only for State Visits to other monarchies. And even if the dresscode is black tie or suits and short gowns she still could opt for a nice necklace but she almost nevers wears one.

The strange thing about that banquet is that the Duchess of Braganca wore a tiara while Queen Letizia didn't even put on a necklace

Thats nothing strange where the Letizia is concerned, she's been upstaged many times due to her lack of any effort ;)

That's true. She seem to have an allergy against necklaces and usually wears as few Jewels as possible.
