:previous: How one would like to be the one to swap that pearl and emerald drops! It's nice to see how carefully the drops are sorted in numbered bags. So every pearl or emerald drop will always go to the same loop.

prince.of.preslav 02-26-2016 10:21 AM

During her latest State Visit to France, The Queen wore a bracelet* at the State Banquet that was not seen before and many assumed that it was a recent present (like for the Diamond Jubilee). However, I came across this photo (GettyImages #141204230) of HM wearing what looks like the same jewel in a 1972 photo, taken before/after the famous video of The Queen talking about The Imperial State Crown.
Funny fact - The dress Elizabeth II wore in the video was originally made for a State Visit to...France. :)

A stunning and regal bracelet.

The bracelet is beautiful. :flowers: Doesn't hurt I am a sapphire fanatic.

AdmirerUS 04-08-2016 06:45 PM

The bracelet is lovely. It's a style that my parents often got for me and selfishly I'd be disappointed the style were not more modern. Today, I realize their taste was better than mine!

Dman 04-08-2016 07:57 PM

There's something about old style jewels that's much more better than modern day jewels.

padams2359 04-08-2016 08:04 PM

That would be a great piece for Catherine. She tends to wear smaller pieces, which are more fitting for her age and the appearances she does.

Countessmeout 04-08-2016 08:10 PM

:previous: Part of me would rather see such a personal piece on one of the queen's granddaughters. As the future queen, Kate will have access to the multitude of the queen's official and more prominent jewels. This is a special family piece from her father and it would be nice to see it go to Anne and Zara. Or one of the other granddaughters IMO.

Angelkiss 04-09-2016 09:32 PM

I think this bracelet is "new" enough to be passed out of the main line and to one of her granddaughters Beatrice, Eugenie, Louise, or Zara.

Agree - i could see it going to Anne and down that line as the Queen wore it to Anne's christening. That's the way i would do it if i was the Queen - nice to have a link to an important event and pass it with that connection

Not a fan either, but very much her style. The queen mum and her husband were both said to be fans of the art deco style (seen in many of her personal pieces). And that broach definitely screams art deco.

Speculation that it has been a 90th birthday gift - has elements of art deco feel to it but at the same time looks to be modern diamonds.

HM has between 150 and 200 brooches but it varies as to who is counting - some people include military badges, others don't - and there may be some that we have yet to see of course - new ones pop up every year....
It is very rare - but no unknown - for HM to appear in public without a brooch.
There are up to around 10 which appear frequently, whilst others are aired only once a year or even less often.

I'd love to see them again pleeeeeaaaase

totally agree , i hope she learned from the kent's and she gonna create a family foundation before she pass away .

Countessmeout 07-25-2016 09:26 PM

Considering her tiaras have been passed down, I doubt there is any concern. The days you'd split tiaras off to other branches are done. No one but Charles and his line will have use and no need to sell for cash. Charles and later Will can lend out as the queen does now.

If you go into the comments there are several very well-done photoshops placing different gems into this tiara: rubies, sapphires, additional diamonds, etc. I personally think that two of Camilla's middle-eastern gift necklaces would serve as perfect "gem mines" to do this.

Beautiful brooches. My favorites is definitely the Prince Albert brooch. It's just exquisite.

Curryong 09-14-2016 01:24 AM

A lovely and romantic gesture by Prince Albert, presenting this lovely brooch to his bride. That was the inspiration of course for the tiara, designed in 1842, which has been in the media lately. I wish the tiara had stayed with its beautiful little partner, the Prince Albert brooch, in the main line of the BRF.

I wonder where Albert got the sapphire from? He designed the brooch and had it made in Germany, presumably. He wasn't hanging around Windsor till the wedding day. Perhaps it came from an old family piece in the Saxe-Coburg vaults.

An interesting little article in the Sunday Times today on the origins of the Cullinan diamond "whose massive size and purity have long seemed to defy the laws of physics".

Quote:

Ever since it was found in South Africa in 1905 experts have been puzzling over how the Earth created a gem of such clarity. All other diamonds are smaller or chemically less pure.

[...]

Now scientists have found that the Cullinan’s origins may have been as spectacular as its current setting. Their research suggests it was born four times closer to the centre of the Earth than other diamonds — and was then shot to the surface in an explosive volcanic eruption.

“Our research suggests diamonds like the Cullinan form in very extreme conditions, where bubbles of molten metal are trapped in red hot rocks up to 600 miles deep in the Earth,” said Evan Smith, at the Gemological Institute of America, whose research is published in Science journal.

Such conditions include temperatures of 1,500C and pressures of 250,000 atmospheres. “This is far deeper than where common diamonds form,” Smith said. “At this depth Earth makes diamonds to a different recipe — so they grow very pure and large.”

Diamonds such as the Cullinan are made of carbon that first dissolves into the molten metal and then coalesces into giant crystals. The Cullinan is also old — it reached the surface 1.2bn years ago and formed up to 2bn years before that, meaning it could predate life itself.

[...]

Adrian Jones, of University College London, where he researches diamond formation, said giant diamonds such as the Cullinan may even be partly extraterrestrial in origin. “Diamond was around before our planet formed, and was part of the building blocks of Earth. Possibly some gem diamond grew using these exotic remnants as seeds. Perhaps some even contain a tiny remnant of non-terrestrial diamond at their centre.”
Pure brilliance: riddle of royal diamond solved | News | The Times & The Sunday Times

An article will be published in Science journal about the diamond.
