I do so agree with you, Lady Nimue! It is just too severe, cold, not feminine at all. Add the harsh bright lipstick to the mix and you have an unapproachable looking princess. She is a stunner! However, I preferred the softer version of Charlene.

Lady Nimue 02-13-2016 03:37 PM

:previous: Yes. Very self-effacing. Too intense even. Why the change?

These pictures say it all. Why, I wonder, the change to such a severe look? It is puzzling imo.

Like I say, it's her choice, but I do miss the 'old' Charlene.

Wow that's a little harsh, one haircut does not make a lovely but reserved Charlene severe or cold, and to say it has rendered her unfeminine and unapproachable is a total nonsense, especially when you consider they select three or four photographs out of several hundred to highlight the point they wish to make in their articles.

I don't think this applies in this case. It's the overall fashion look being critiqued and is the same whatever photo was chosen. In fact, I think they chose the most flattering images from a certain perspective. :flowers:

Not sure why you are quick to discount the view, MARG. :flowers: It's a valid one, not nonsense (you may take your push-back farther than the original comments positioned). Charlene has significantly changed her 'look', and the severity of the haircut is part of that change. It's an interesting transformation that creates an impression that for some is not 'soft and feminine'. It's a valid point. In person I am sure she is her usual warm and availing self. :flowers:

HereditaryPrincess 02-14-2016 05:16 PM

Charlene's outfit is amazing and she looks gorgeous, though I'm not a fan of her new style. It's a little too short and boyish for my taste.

I am at a loss and cannot understand how someone who, while not being the most gregarious or charismatic Princess on the block but is nevertheless quite serene, can be accused of looking cold, severe and unapproachable. Those statements are not fashion attributes but rather personality traits and so I find myself somewhat at a loss to see them used on a fashion thread.

Now if someone said the cut of the coat was too severe or the colour too cold to suit Charlene, that would be a fashion opinion.

It appears that you have mis-read what was said but you actually haven't, to go by your own words (since you do use the word 'looking' as in 'appearing'). Might it be that you object to the words used on general principle? :bb:

No one (not me, anyway, or udyusa) 'accused' her of being 'cold, severe and unapproachable', but that her recent fashion choices, coupled with her new 'severe' haircut (someone just used the adjective 'boyish'), creates a 'look' that (for some people) makes her appear unapproachable. (Note the nuance). She looks like a magazine fashion layout, which strives for that 'lofty unattainable' image of the 'cold, cool goddess'. Matter of taste.

You express democratic views concerning allowing opinions to be stated freely. I hope the above helps. :flowers:

My push back relates to the attributing of personal traits as evidenced by a personal style of hair and clothes. It is unnecessary to become belligerent because I did not agree with you or udyusa in your views of Charlene's perceived personality change. This is a democratic forum and I queried the terms you both used to attribute personality traits to Charlene, evidencing her hair cut, clothes and perceived mien on a fashion and style thread.

My point was that you seem to object to the use of the words used in connection with Charlene though they were words never used to describe her personally as you insist they were. You seem keen to stay-put in your initial upset so I leave you to it.

HereditaryPrincess 02-20-2016 05:43 PM

I'm not a fan of Charlene's jumper and skirt together but individually they are very nice. Overall though, she looks sophisticated and elegant. My favourite part of her look is her lovely coat.

MARG 02-20-2016 09:24 PM

:previous: I have to agree about the colour of the jumper. It is a little too dark a shade of grey to put with a lighter shaded grey coat. That being said, I absolutely love the shade of the blue skirt and shoes and the cut of the coat is gorgeous. Flared or gored skirts on coats are very feminine and this really flatters Charlene by giving her a softer silhouette.

The shade of blue is very vibrant and pretty matched with the grey. She looks good!

fandesacs2003 02-21-2016 12:10 PM

Lovely. But inappropriate for a visit to refugees camp. A simple pair of trousers with low profile shoes and a coat would fit better.

udyusa 02-21-2016 01:34 PM

Totally agree with MARG here. Love the vibrant blues in the skirt and shoes but not with the jumper. Love the softness of the coat. Very flattering look on Charlene.

Florestane 02-21-2016 01:36 PM

I love the coat - the tailoring is great.

I don't see anything inappropriate about it. She looks smart and it's simple and not ostentatious - it's the female equivalent of what the men in suits are wearing.

azure 02-21-2016 02:31 PM

lovely lovely lovely! like always!

XeniaCasaraghi 02-21-2016 03:58 PM

All Charlene's choices have been hits though on various levels. I was not a fan of her short hair at first bit it has grown on me. I have no problem with the colors she wears and think she wears them well and I like her habit of wearing big scarves...though I thought Monaco was one of those places that only has one season...hot.
In close up photos she does look to have a lot of wrinkles and seems close to suffering from what Stephanie and Caroline have.

Moonmaiden23 02-21-2016 04:42 PM

:previous:Any woman who spends lots of time in the intense Mediterranean sun is eventually going to suffer the consequences. Contrast the complexions of Charlene, Stephanie and Caroline of Monaco with the flawless skin of their Royal counterparts in Northern Europe-Mathilde of Belgium, Stephanie and Claire of Luxembourg.

However, Princess Grace of Monaco spent roughly half of her life in the Med, and she retained her beautiful skin until her death in her early 50's. She was also a non-smoker unlike her daughters and Princess Charlene. So, I do believe that cigarettes are a key factor in the premature and rapidly aging complexions of Charlene, Caroline and Stephanie.

Whoever is tailoring Charlene's coats is a master. She has really been hitting it out of the park with her coats for years!

Judging from these pictures I'm not sure that Albert and Charlene actually toured the camp itself. It looks as though they were instead meeting members of the Monaco red cross who are working there in which case the men's suits and Charlene's clothes are fine.

I like the grey coat outfit although I'm not an enormous fan of wedge heeled boots. I like her hair at this event as well.

I'm less keen on the cream coat outfit - I'm one of the few people who doesn't like her never ending parade of neutrals.

MARG 02-27-2016 09:11 PM

Once, or actually twice more, Charlene looks amazing. I love the grey long cardigan, it looks perfect for watching the rugby and her black with white coat looks really flattering on her.

While I love Charlene in colour and I would dearly love to see more, (remember that beautiful pink chiffon silk she wore in the UK?), she knows how to really rock both pastels and deep shades, it does not diminish how well she wears neutrals or how flattering and elegant she looks in them.

A lovely selection of pictures of some of Charlene's outfits - I loved all of those apart from the National Day one - where she looked, to me, like she was about to whip out a paint palette and brush.

We'll have to disagree on the neutrals; I don't think she wears them well or that they flatter her, a lot of the time I think they make her look washed out.

I really admire Princess Charlene for having the guts to go really short with her hair.

It reminds me of what Alexandre de Paris did for Audrey Hepburn in the 1960s.

So many women in the public eye seem to be stuck in some sort of long-hair limbo, only being adventurous enough to go from dead-straight to so-called "Hollywood Waves".

So many have these long stiff curtains down each side of their face. It's amazing to watch how their hair doesn't move as they read the news etc.

In the past, long hair had "life" in it - moving and swinging and bouncing. That's what made it attractive and what drew attention.

I'm ready for more freedom and individuality to come into vogue. I'm really over with every age group doing the same thing.

Did you see the "Tinkerbell" updo is currently having a moment? (Like the "Disney" fairy - a fringe with a top knot. As "going out" hair - not cleaning the bathroom hair - though that is what it looked like on some of the older ladies who have tried it.)

I'm sure Charlene will change her hair again in due course, but I'm so glad to see some-one buck the herd mentality and do her own thing.

MARG 03-03-2016 05:02 AM

:previous: Yes, local "celebrities" such as newsreaders or presenters are the vanguard of the "hair" trends. We sit back and take bets on how much hairspray it takes to get their long hair as stiff as a board. But to be honest, "natural" curls and waves only work when one is inside and even then the big curls gradually fall out due to the sheer weight of the hair as we have seen on several royals.

Charlene's pixie look is really lovely and suits her very well and is the third or fourth version of short hair we have seen her style. As her hair grows out she tries different styles but with her soft, fine hair she needs a lot of time and product and for a mother of twins I don't think she cares to look disheveled at home and waste time on her hair before going out.

What she has is wash-and-wear and knock-their-socks-off! (Half her luck!)

princess carmen 03-03-2016 10:23 AM

Her hair looks good , no hair blowing in her eyes or pushing it out of the way . Easy and simple to take care of .

udyusa 03-04-2016 01:55 PM

Just a wee bit too short, imho. She needs some softening effect. Granted I'm getting used to it, but I still preferred her hair before this drastic cut. (Even Audrey Hepburn's cut was a pixie look which was still soft and feminine.)

I agree it's just too short. The back doesn't suit the shape of her head hope she let's it grow a little soon.

It's true this haircut requires less time for styling, but because of its severity she wears strongly defined make-up much more than we've seen previously and this can't be a quick and simple procedure - so I don't think it's a particularly time saving look.

udyusa 03-04-2016 04:42 PM

Good point, Elly C, and another reason I find her whole look to be less flattering. I much preferred her in softer makeup.

She could wearing boy short underwear or it could be the lining of the culottes only comes to the thigh - you're right that there is something showing.

I didn't pay too much attention to the make up - I do think she looks tired.

A female friend of mine has silk culottes in a similar fashion as Charlene and told me (when I asked her about it) that she has some kind of petticoat shorts underneath because they stick to her legs if she doesn't.

fandesacs2003 03-27-2016 01:29 PM

Unfortunately, the culottes is fashion. It is an ugly and difficult outfit, and suits to very few bodies. Charlene is tall, it is OK for her body, but it is still ugly. I saw it worn by short ladies, a nightmare. Hope that this fashion will disappear foe ever

I think her decision to dress casually for this occasion is fine. The three pieces of her outfit are rather nice on their own, but don't fit together that well. Maybe if she had left the jacket off it would be better. I also don't mind the colour of her leggings, at least she CAN wear them, unlike many girls who rather shouldn't...

I'm not a great fan of leggings for an official visit even if it is meant to be informal ( I don't like when Kate wears them either) but at least both ladies have the figure to wear them. Otherwise I think she looks okay. Having an elfin haircut is so unforgiving for photos as it can look flat and a little lifeless, and makeup can appear harsh.

I like this outfit....on Charlene. Really on anyone else its a disaster but she has the figure to pull it off. Hair and earrings. Love!

MARG 04-17-2016 10:32 PM

:previous: That's what I like about Charlene, she has established her own 'style' and we recognise what is "very Charlene". We also recognise that she looks fabulous in it and most of us would very definitely not!

I like the ensemble as it is indeed "very Charlene" and I really love her new earrings. I think she must love yellow because she has worn many yellow (diamond?) earrings. There's another piece of her style, she most often wears one significant piece of jewellery, in this case, her earrings.

^^^ I agree, I also like the fact that she doesn't overdo jewelry. She looked lovely at the tennis, the more casual outfit fitting for the occasion. The Colour and style were nice. And yes, because she is tall and slim, and possesses a natural elegance, she can wear anything!

I love her Christian Dior pumps and the silver shades. Her outfit isn't bad if it wasn't for the visible buttons down the front of her pants, looks odd.

Not my thing.... but I too love the shoes

A perfectly judged outfit for the occasion with some interesting touches. Charlene looks very chic.

Wonderful, wonderful COLOR!! Great for her, and not everyone can pull off orange.

What white ensemble?

melina premiere 05-12-2016 12:38 PM

there are photos on the FB palace page where Charlene was wearing a white dress at the boarding meeting . But
I prefer the orange dress and I like her pearls collar

OK - thanks.

I've had a look - it's ok, very suitable for the Californian sunshine and I quite like the asymmetric neckline but I prefer the orange, on balance.

I think both dresses are very elegant and professional looking. I also love her accessories.

Both dresses are by Roland Mourret. She should use him more often as I think she looks wonderful.

Beautiful dresses! and each in a colour that can be difficult to wear for many.

I agree, she looks absolutely wonderful in both the white and the orange, which goes to show it is the style that counts for her rather than the colour.

Speaking of colour, the vibrant orange looks amazing on Charlene. Which makes me thing that for daywear, it is all about the light. The summer light in Monaco is totally different to that of California.

Frelinghighness 05-12-2016 10:59 PM

Wow1 what could be better? the orange fits like a dream and she can handle the length with her height, the white is perfect for her. roland mourant is her man

melina premiere 05-13-2016 02:10 AM

Charlene was very elegant in the white dresses and the orange dress, she is always fantastic when she is not wearing Akrys, yes, Roland Mourant is her man.

Countessmeout 05-13-2016 02:52 AM

Love both looks. Great in the orange, perfect punch of color on her :flowers:

The white is classic and elegant on her

Marty91charmed 05-13-2016 07:28 AM

Both great looks, but the orange one is my favorite too!

Erin9 05-13-2016 08:43 AM

She looks beautiful in both dresses!

togram 05-13-2016 09:15 AM

Charlene always looks wonderful, but I think that this time she looks fantastic!!!! Lovely colour and it shows that Charlene can wear even 'difficult' colours and look fabulous. She is also fantastic with her choice of accessories. She can teach European royalty a lesson or two when it comes to style.

sophie25 05-13-2016 10:40 AM

She wore Roland Mourret to the award lunch on the 12th as well but I don't have a picture. This one was white as well and very lovely.
