Any reason why Princess Margriet and Pieter van Vollenhoven will not attend anymore? Thought they would still attend as she remains a member of the Royal House and in line of succession and that only Princess Beatrix would stop to attend.

Marengo 09-03-2013 07:25 AM

The newspapers didn't give an explanation for the absence, they just state that the couple will not be present.

The cortege and attendance at the Hall of Knights will be restricted to TM and TRH only which is in line with what happened in 1980,only Queen Beatrix,Prince Claus and Margriet and Pieter were in attendance..That was the case for 5 years, until Alexander turned 18 in 1985.

Ofcourse the then Queen's sisters had no place in-line to the Throne anymore at the time, but it just shows that after a change on the Throne it will be just TM and their next of kin,i.e.,Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien.Plus the route will be like last years, not passing the Cabinet of the King but a more direct route.

We will have to wait till Amalia is 18 to have another Member in attendance...till 2022...seems awfully long.....

It will be the first time today that a King will deliver the Speech from the Throne in the Hall of Knights and the first time also that a Queen will be seated next to the King on the daise.

Kings Willem I,II & III delivered the speech in a different Hall while none of their Queens was seated beside them. The Thrones used are the same that have Always been in use.The last who was seated on what will be Máxima's was Prince Claus.

During the Reigns of Queens Wilhelmina,Juliana & Beatrix their spouses were always seated next to them on the daise.

Maxima in gold. Looks great, that hat is similar to that hard pink hat she had last year.

I miss WA military uniform, that was way more regal than that suit.

Marengo 09-17-2013 08:26 AM

I am not sure about the color of Máxima's outfit. She fades in the background since the color matches the carpet and the golden pattern on the throne.

I am puzzled as well why the king and prince Constantijn do not wear a sash while the queen does. They either have to upgrade the dressing code of the men or downgrade the women. The present effect is odd, but it was always the case: prince Claus and Pieter van Vollenhoven never wore a sash either during Prinsjesdag.

The king started with a personal note, about his mother, the enthronement and the support after the death of prince Friso.

The King did wear the insignia of the Knight Grand Cross of the Military Order of Willem. The only link in dress that refers to him as the King.

As jewelry the Queen used the elements of the Borneo parure for earjewelry and broche.
Princess Laurentien wore saphires.

Bright autumnal day no Ann..There's an overcast all day almost, and this morning it poured in The Hague....

There have been Prinsjedag days...grin...with drizzle yes, both from the Dutch crying their eyes out after hearing the government plans, and due to weather conditions too...hmm..

But ib general, there is often something magical in that sooner or later a patch of sun appearsa. We call that an Oranje zonnetje...an Orange sun..

Is it just me and pardon my gush, but aren't they the most beautiful King and Queen!!! Princess Beatrix must be sooooo proud!

Al_bina 09-17-2013 09:51 AM

Thanks for the photos!
King Willem-Alexander was very serious. Queen Maxima looked nice. At the same time, I fully agree with Marengo noting that the golden dress fades into the background.

suztav 09-17-2013 10:02 AM

Love Maxima's dress! Also think that Laurentien looks fabulous .... her hat however is a bit too casual for the lace dress.

Bine221 09-17-2013 10:17 AM

Why did Princess Beatrix not attend?
Is it because it would be an issue for her personally?
Or does she have the impression, that it looks strange for all people from the Netherlands, if she always sat on the throne and will not sit there any more?
BYe Bine

Marengo 09-17-2013 11:33 AM

It is customary that the abdicated monarch does not attend the event.Queen Juliana and Queen Wilhelmina also remained absent after their abdications.

Other absentees: Princess Margriet and Pieter van Vollenhoven, who attended the ceremony 52 and 46 times respectively.

Don't like Laurentien her hat, however I think the Queen looked fabulous! Amazing! Her dress is royal, chique and absolutely extremely beautiful. Can't be happier.
I really like the King's words towards his mother and the Dutch population because of the death of his brother. They became quite emotional at that point of the speech.

It was great to see the images and video of King Willem-Alexander's speach from the throne on Prinsjesdag. I notice that when the king and queen walked towards the thrones, the same fanfare was used as the one at the inauguration ceremony back in April. Does anyone know any more about this piece of music, who wrote it etc??

Marengo 09-17-2013 06:35 PM

It is a new piece created for the enthronement ceremony. The composer is Willem van Merwijk and the piece is called 'L'Entrata del Re'. For Queen Beatrix's inauguration Jurriaan Andriessen already composed the 'entrada della regina'.

It is Orange and the Banner of the respective regiment or other parts of the Forces on duty that specific day.It is tradition to salute the Banner.Always.

Same you see with either incoming or outgoing State Visits, what follows first after arrival is the inspection of the Guards of Honour, and both the incoming as well as the hosting head of State will Always bow for the Banner of the Honorary Guards.

For me personally, both events are neck and neck in terms of being visual feasts! I think the Dutch seems to have more pomp and pageantry visible outside including the Golden Coach and live reporting of the Dutch Royal Family leaving Nordeinde etc, whilst the British have more inside, with the Crown, regalia, robes and processions inside the houses of parliament.

It was again nice to hear the King's fanfare as he entered the Ridderzaal!

Traditionally only members of the Royal House, from the age of 18, do attend Prinsjesdag.

At present there are only a handful members of the Royal House being 18 years and older:

HM The King
HM Queen Máxima
HRH Prince Constantijn
HRH Princess Laurentien
HRH Princess Beatrix *
HRH Princess Margriet*
Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven LL.M.*

* Princess Beatrix has abdicated the kingship and together with her also her sister and brother-in-law have slowed down their public agendas.

The dresscode was jacquet (civil) or grand military tenue. The King and his brother were in civil wear, in jacquet (= morning dress). In combination with that grand decorations are never worn. In their lapels, the King and the Prince wore miniature versions of their orders, a so called bâton. When Queen Máxima and Princess Laurentien were in normal day-dress, they would have worn these bâtons too. But they were in long day dress and then the grand decorations can be worn.

On the picture below you see an Order (Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau). Such an Order is effectifely only worn on a military tenue or when attending a white tie event. Besides it, you see a bâton, a miniature. That can be worn in the lapels or on a neat dress when attending more formal events: https://www.eindhoven.nl/upload_mm/4/...llimage_ko.jpg

In this picture you can see the bâtons in the lapels of both the King and the Prince: https://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/K...N1VHN8T6qx.jpg

In 2012 the (then) Prince of Orange appeared in military tenue, then grand decorations can be worn. It gives a more complete image indeed: https://www.haagsefotos.nl/html/prins...g-2012-113.jpg

Apparently they are expecting horrible weather tomorrow.

As usual the budget was already leaked a few days ago. So the king will not be telling anything new.

It is the last time we will see the Golden State Carriage as the carriage will be restored the next 3-4years. I wonder if there will be protestors as recently the carriage became a topic for discussion as one of the panels depicts the Dutch virgin being handed riches from coloured figures, embodying 'the colonies'. Depending how fierce the discussionw ill get the next years, the carriage may be retired to a museum for good.

The glass carriage is IMHO much more elegant. Queen WIlhelmina disliked the pompous golden carriage but still alternated each year between the golden- and the glass carriage.

An Ard Ri 09-14-2015 02:53 PM

Marengo 09-14-2015 03:52 PM

There is the urban legend of the 'oranjezonnetje' (little orange sun); quite often when bad weather is predicted some rays of sun appear when the RF steps outside. So let's hope for that ;).

It seems that Marianne Thieme is using her outfit to protest against TTIP, the trade agreement with the Us which will force us to import chloride chickens and other poisoned foods. The outfit of the minister of education was a 'high tech outfit' designed by the University of Eindhoven. Her shoes come from a 3D printer.

Maxima's gown is stunning!

HM's handpainted dress is made of organza silk. The pattern is based on the design of the Japanese room in Palace Huis ten Bosch and is embellished with the beads. The designer is Jan Taminiau.

Queen Maxima looked great. Jan Taminiau makes amazing gowns for her. The dress is exquisitely feminine.

She wears same hair decoration at the back of her hairdo. She has done the same also in previouis years. I find it more a pity that the King can not wear his Uniform anymore like he did as Prince of Orange.

He can wear his uniform, no one stops him. The King seems to have made a deliberate distinction in civil and military events. This one, an address to the Parliament, of course is purely civil.

I do miss the presence of Beatrix and Margriet at the Prinsjesdag event.

Only strange that as Prince of Orange he wore his Uniform also to this civil Event. And it looks strange with the Queen wearing her Order sash but not the King as Head of State.

Duc_et_Pair 09-15-2015 05:19 PM

I agree but he is there as member of the Government and most likely he wants to stress that constitutional aspect. An uniform adds colour and decorum, I agree: see picture.

What does someone see when he/she stands in front of the gates at Noordeinde Palace?

The Guard of Honour (a detachement of the Royal Netherlands Air Force) is preparing in front of Noordeinde Palace

The commander of the Guard of Honour informs an Aide-de-Camp that the guard is ready

An equerry (in red) and a riding servant (with a blocker for the wheels of the carriages)

Overview of the Cour of Noordeinde Palace

After the carriages for the members of the Household, for Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien, etc.:

The Golden State Carriage, pulled by eight horses rides on the Cour

Her Majesty Queen Máxima

The King, Queen Máxima, Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien

Is the King of the Netherlands not Head of the Armed Forces vis a vis the Queen of the United Kingdom et al, the King of Spain and the King of Norway? I can't think of any other reason why we never seem to see the Willem-Alexander in uniform anymore.

Article 42 of the Constitution:
The Government comprises of the King and the ministers.

Article 97 of the Constitution:
The Government has the supreme authority over the armed forces.

In contrary to many of his colleagues, the King is an integral part of Government (art 42). The same Government which holds the supreme authority over the armed forces (art 97). In Dutch eyes it is not possible to be a member of Government ánd to be in the armed forces which is subjected to that Government.

Any Dutch military whom wants to become a member of Government has to lay down all military commissions. That does however not mean that these retired military do not have the right to wear an uniform. The King can wear an uniform if he likes but he clearly makes a difference in events with a military character or a civil event (like Prinsjesdag).

Here King Willem-Alexander wears a naval uniform: the golden galon stripes indicate the rank of an admiral, the royal insignia (an orb crossed with a sceptre and the sword-of-state) shows it is His Majesty The King. See picture.

The king will leave the palace at 13:00 GMT+1

The last time the carriage was used was in 1923. The steps are narrow, the king and queen have practiced getting in and out of the carriage. They will use Frisian horses for the glass carriage and Groningen horses for the other carriages.

The route is slightly different due to the construction of an underground parking garage. This means that the carriage will not pass the cabinet of the King, where Princess Beatrix usually looks from the window. She is now standing on the steps of the Mauritshuis.

**
1st carriage: the master of ceremonies of the court and the chaimberlain of the province of Flevoland.

2nd carriage: Grand Master and Grand Mistress.

3rd carriage (Gala glass Berliner): Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien. The princess is wearing a trash bag coloured outfit from head to toe. Knitted metallic jersey is the fabric, according to the NOS. She is wearing Queen Máxima's chandelier earrings and an insect brooch.

Edit: according to modekoninginmaxima.nl, the dress is made by Hardies (The Hague) and Talbot Rumhof. The inspiration was a coat of mail. The hat was made by Evelien Gentis of Eudia.

4th carriage (Glass carriage): the King and Queen. Queen Máxima is wearing a dress that has a night blue armure top and a golden silk & satin double garbardine skirt with blue guipire lace and small sequins. The dress has been made by Claes Iversen.

HM is also wearing a wide brimmed golden Parabuntal hat by Fabienne Delvigne. She is wearing Queen Beatrix' sapphire earrnings and a diamond-sapphire bow brooch of the dismantled Amsterdam parure.

Does anyone know who is that with Geert Wilders :previous: ?

Marengo 09-20-2016 07:26 AM

That is his 2nd wife Krisztina Marfai. I believe she is from Hungary, which is ironic as he is usually ranting about Eastern Europeans in The Netherlands.

The female politicians mostly look horrendous as usual. Marianne Thieme, leader of the 'Party of the Animals' is dressed as a circus director it seems.

BTW Apart from the good news from the throne, there is more good news for at least the queen today: Natan opens a shop in Amsterdam :bang:. https://www.parool.nl/amsterdam/modehuis-natan~a4380287/

maxima looks magnificent. this dress doesn't top up last year's but comes a close second. i wouldn't be surprised if it was also jan taminiau - he sure knows how to dress the queen. blue is also maxima's colour, she looks great in it (just like during her inauguration).

Marengo 09-20-2016 09:56 AM

Apparently the dress is made by Claes Iversen. This is his sketch:

A large renovation of the Inner Court will start in 2020. Minister Blok has said that parlament should decide what they want to do for the opening of parlement: re-open the Hall of Knights for a day or move to a different location. A re-opening will result in a delay of the renovation, a sad-looking Inner court as it is under re-construction and extra costs, a majority of the chamber is against this idea. A possibility is to move the opening to the Grote Kerk (Great Church) of The Hague.

Once again my absolute favourite Dutch royal event has come round and as ever I have been impressed by the grandeur, the pomp and ceremony, the formality and the importance of the event - I always love to hear the King's fanfare and to see the carriages and balcony appearance and simply cannot fault the whole event!
