There are tensions within the UK about the extent to which immigrants do or do not integrate into the culture of British society more widely. The policy of unfettered multiculturalism and almost limitless immigration as practiced by the Labour government, has had a fairly catastrophic effect, in terms of the gettoisation of ethnic groups in some parts of the country, not to mention the pressures on public services and the economy. Even Ed Milliband (Labour Party leader) has admitted that such problems exist in a recent speech.
The changing face of our cities and the country more generally, as well as the speed at which such change is taking place, is a matter of concern for large chunks of the British people. That doesn't make us racist or bigots. Despite such concern, we British have not flocked to far-right political parties in the way some of our continental neighbours have (France and the Netherlands, for example).
The Queen, and the Prince of Wales especially, have worked to try and foster good relations between the different faith and minority groups. They have tried to encourage dialogue which is necessary to bring everyone together as part of the Great British family. The monarchy has an ability, almost unique in this country, to unite different races and religions and reinforce the fact that, whatever our country of origin or religion, we are all British. If we look at the millions who turned out for the RF during the Jubilee celebrations, people of every race and religion was there. Much more remains to be done, however.
I agree with most of IluvBertie's post actually, Elizabeth II has done her job, the monarchy is still intact, she produced an heir and she will pass away probably being the most 'stable' monarch we have ever had. There's nothing special or significant to attach to her, we can give her no title to remember her by. However, it is not her fault that we have not had WW3 for her to 'lead the country' through, nor have we had some major world disaster, or industrial change, or abdication incident. She's done what she can within her limits, and that's a fine legacy to have.
