A night out in Salford at the Royal Variety Performance? I'll pass, says Philip | Mail Online

An article from 'The Daily Mail' about this year's Royal Variety Performance. Appeared to be a mix of comedy, modern music and some classic theatre. Not bad. I'd love to see a full shot of Princess Royal's dress. It looked sparkly and fun.
Royal Variety Performance 2011: Pixie Lott and Nicole Scherzinger are all legs and cleavage to perform for the Royals | Mail Online |

The DM must think the royal family are terribly prudish if they think that legs and cleavage are too much for such a show.

I hope Royal Protocol enjoyed himself and will come on here to report back in due course. Alex |
The female performers looked trashy. And who the heck is Cee Lo Green? I live in the "Hip Hop City" and I've never heard of him.
As for Mr. Manilow not getting any attention, what a shame. |
This article from the 'Mirror' mentions Barry Manilow, and gives more commentary of the performance.

Did Cee Lo Green sing his most popular song?
Somehow I doubt it.

The Report:
We arrived at about 5.30 p.m. and it was already quite busy. We were seated at 6.30 p.m. The standard of dress was good rather than outstanding. The majority of men (95%) wore orthodox black tie, the remainder wore lounge suit. The women were more random. About 50% short evening dress, 25% long evening dress, 15% trousers and sparkly top and 10% plain day clothes. Hilariously there were a few tiara and evening glove combos which were completely out of place. Her Royal Highness arrived at 7.15 p.m. accompanied by Sir Timothy and was seated in a purple Royal Box specially constructed for the occasion. HRH was well dressed in a long navy dress (for a change) and seemed to enjoy herself. The show began with a fanfare and Hayley Westenra sang "God save The Queen". Peter Kay was funny and the comedians were a good laugh. There were lots of technical errors and delays and the show didn't finish until 11.30ish. There was one programme per couple but we managed to grab an extra one on the way out. We were asked to stay seated at the end while HRH met the cast but everyone left as it was so late, though we hovered in the foyer to see HRH depart. HRH left in good spirits and was all smiles and waves. The programme was good and very enjoyable, we had good seats and we really enjoyed our evening. It was a bit long and I think the ITV people were to blame for the muck ups. I don't know if I would rush back but it was a wonderful experience none the less. |
So Peter Kay - I love it.

I actually think it was nice that Princess Anne attended, i think she and Sir Tim had more chance of enjoying it than HM and Prince Philip would. I mean the Queen is in her 80s, Prince Philip in his 90s, would any other couple that old want to go (and go all the way to Manchester from London) to see the type of show the Royal Variety is?
Having watched the show on ITV player I thought I saw Princess Anne thank Hayley Westenra after she sang the anthem which I though was particularly sweet of Anne and showed a different side to her than if often reported. I imagine Anne and Tim rather enjoyed themselves! |

I think this is the equivalent of the Royal short straw

Dame Shirley is probably the only one that the Queen has heard of. With Ed Sheeran, she would be thinking that wow Harry can sing but he needs a haircut.
The lineup is definitely more the Cambridges taste in music. Sent from my iPhone using The Royals Community |
