Prince William Created Duke of Cambridge: April 29, 2011

JessRulz 04-29-2011 03:01 AM

Titles announced for Prince William and Catherine Middleton

"The Queen has today been pleased to confer a Dukedom on Prince William of Wales. His titles will be Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus."

Thena 04-29-2011 03:02 AM

Cambridge! How perfect! And the cool thing about being awake this early is seeing it show up on my Twitter feed as everyone else found out.

PrincePatrick 04-29-2011 03:03 AM

Wooohooooo!!! Excellent choice!

Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.noected with the duke title?

Sancia 04-29-2011 03:04 AM

That sounds deliciously oldfashioned and lovely: Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge

I like it. A lot of people in the forum seemed to have tipped this.

Sister Morphine 04-29-2011 03:05 AM

I was right! I called it a long time ago. Yay me. :)

Lady Ann 04-29-2011 03:05 AM

Yes.............great choice.

PrincessofEurope 04-29-2011 03:06 AM

Personally would have prefered William not to be given an additional title - but Cambridge it is with the lesser titles reflecting aspects of both Scotland and Northern Ireland

Zonk 04-29-2011 03:06 AM

And by the voters here at TRF.

Fantastic!

Lady Gudgeon 04-29-2011 03:08 AM

Just saw it on BBCA - Duke and Duchess of Cambridge! Yippee. (For another thread but I bet that means she'll get the Cambridge Lovers Knot at some point).

This is so exciting...I can't believe I am up at 3am!

It just sounds good. I love it. Now I hope I'm 2 for 2 in predictions, as I have her wearing the Strathmore Rose tiara.

prsgoddess 04-29-2011 03:08 AM

One of the good things about being up this early! The title is making me wonder about the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara for Catherine, but that is for a different thread...

Skippy 04-29-2011 03:08 AM

Yay!!!! My favourite title!!!! Totally awesome!!!!

HRHofNothing 04-29-2011 03:08 AM

So their eldest son will be born HRH The Earl of STRATHEARN

Sister Morphine 04-29-2011 03:08 AM

Wow, Wikipedia is fast -- they already have William's new title up!

Thena 04-29-2011 03:09 AM

Cambridge has some nice history to it, linking William back to his great-great grandmother, Queen Mary.

luisianna 04-29-2011 03:10 AM

Really love this new title. And I think it makes sense (to me at least) for a man who is one day likely to become Prince of Wales to not have a Welsh title given today, but for the lesser titles to represent Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Renata4711 04-29-2011 03:10 AM

Amazing that the TRF participants got it right !!

Glad that the title lives again...

Iluvbertie 04-29-2011 03:10 AM

He is of course the great-great-great-great grandson of Adolphus - the 7th son of George III who was also created Duke of Cambridge.

Duke of Cambridge - Mary Adelaide - Queen Mary - George VI - Elizabeth II - Charles - William

No - their eldest son - by the 1917 LPs will be HRH Prince xxxx of Cambridge.

HRHofNothing 04-29-2011 03:12 AM

Maybe to early to guess but Clarence for Harry?

MRSJ 04-29-2011 03:12 AM

According to 1917 Letters Patent, the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales is HRH Prince X of Y. So if their eldest son is named George, he'd be HRH Prince George of Cambridge.

Josefine 04-29-2011 03:15 AM

how does this work will these titles follow when he will be prince of wales as his father becomes king?

berry 04-29-2011 03:16 AM

Immediately upon Charles' accession, Prince William will become the Duke of Cornwall. Precedent indicates that he'll be known as HRH the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

He will always be HRH Prince William. You don't lose titles, you gain them. However like his father and uncles, he'll be known by his new title -- the Duke of Cambridge.

When Edward VII became King, his son became HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York. So when Charles becomes king, before he is invested as the Prince of Wales, William will be HRH The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

The Lady Mimi 04-29-2011 03:18 AM

William wouldn't become Prince of Wales until Charles chooses to create him Prince of Wales. (He'll continue to be the Duke of Cambridge, however, until his own accession when the title will merge with the crown.)

Will she wear the Lovers Knot now?

Duke of Leaside 04-29-2011 03:26 AM

So Miss Catherine Elizabeth Middleton will, in less than 4 hours, become

Her Royal Highness Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

She'll by styled "HRH The Duchess of Cambridge"

From Bucklebury to Buckingham Palace!!!

Pretty cool.

Small correction, she will be "HRH Princess William, etc".

I'm not sure they'll be "of Wales" anymore. The territorial designations are an informal addition to titles that originally came about to differentiate similarly-named children within the large royal family of the 19th century; I'm not sure they get used once someone has a unique title.

Moonmaiden23 04-29-2011 03:36 AM

And just like Sister Morphine, I am partial to the Strathmore Rose..it's exquisite as you can see from my avatar.

I believe they will not. I had already edited my original post to take "of Wales" out and also to remove the "The" before Princess.

I'm not sure if it will be "...Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus" or "...Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus".

We may have to wait to see the wording in the Letters Patent.

Jacknch 04-29-2011 03:40 AM

Hurrah!!! Cambridge is in East Anglia! So the main ducal titles are staying with the main heirs.

Either one would be correct, as I've seen similar titles worded just like that.

SisterMorphine, I'm going for the Strathmore Rose too. I hope like you I get 2 out of 2 as I also thought Cambridge. I hope Catherine dos'nt wear the Cambridge Tiara today, I think it's too" heavy" for her.

Yes. Once Charles becomes King, William will become "The Prince William, The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge" and Harry will become "The Prince Harry".

Roslyn 04-29-2011 04:16 AM

I was rather hoping it wouldn't be Cambridge, but I'm not surprised it is, considering Diana's connection to the Cambridge Lovers' Knot tiara, and Cambridge Emeralds. I'm sure we'll see them on Kate now.

EmpressRouge 04-29-2011 04:18 AM

ABC (and probably other networks) and "royal expert" bought into that story that the Queen might allow her to be called "Princess Catherine." I think we have finally put that story to rest.

Mia_mae 04-29-2011 04:26 AM

I love the choice! But I believe she will be call Princess Catherine nonetheless!

christinacg 04-29-2011 04:28 AM

I'm so happy with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge! I think many of us guessed that. Also like the Earl of Strathearn.

EmpressRouge 04-29-2011 04:31 AM

Sorry if this is being repeated, but the last Marquess of Cambridge died and thus the title become extinct April 16, 1981, exactly 30 years ago (plus a few days).

glassary 04-29-2011 04:35 AM

Cambridge is the perfect choice for them. Love that Catherine will be Duchess of Cambridge rather than simply Princess William.
Congrats to them both!

QUEENECE29 04-29-2011 09:25 AM

Very convenient and a nice title for William and Catherine. Many more good titles.

1222 04-29-2011 09:59 AM

Wondeful news, The Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge .The Queen's title was a wonderful wedding gift.

LadyCat 04-29-2011 10:10 AM

I know this is for a different thread but since it's been mentioned here... I hope Catherine does not use the Cambridge Tiara in conjunction with the title. The media is already drawing way to many comparisons between Catherine and Diana, the use of that particular tiara would only exacerbate the comparisons. Love the title and had hoped the Queen would either make Catherine a princess in her own right (as she did with Prince Philip) or dust off Cambridge for the couple.

Kastalia 04-29-2011 12:47 PM

In the forum's poll I have voted for the Dukedom of Cambridge as many of us!
I'm so happy for Catherine's new status and as far as I can see Wiki has modified her profile page and is now protected!!

Catherine's title is as follows: HRH Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

She is a princess by marriage, not by birth. However because William was made a peer on his wedding day, she will be known by the feminine form of his ducal title -- HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.

Nico 04-29-2011 02:58 PM

TRH, Prince and Princess William of Wales?

I was told by a friend that they are still are still Prince and Princess William of Wales but they were also given a Royal Duke ship (can't think of the correct word). I hope this is true and they can still use this though I doubt they will

I wish Kate and Will had declined the Duke title. It's so blah!

Lumutqueen 04-29-2011 04:30 PM

To be given a Ducal title is an honour, William is now also an Earl and a Baron.

According to the website of the Prince of Wales, their new titles (in addition to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) are The Earl and Lady of Strathearn and The Baron and Countess of Carrickfergus.

Can anyone explain why so? You would think the counterpart for Earl would be Countess and for Baron it would be Baroness.

wbenson 04-29-2011 04:44 PM

I think there's an error on the site. It should be Earl and Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Baroness/Lady Carrickfergus (no "of" in the latter).

American Observer7 04-29-2011 04:55 PM

What so great about this or these titles? What makes this so perfect? I thought William did not care for titles? I am suprised he/they accepted this. It would have been more interesting making Kate a Princess, Princess William of Wales and if he remained Prince William.

He's still Prince William and making Kate a princess in her own right would have been even more pompous. He needs a title, he is a future King.

Umm, she is Princess William. Her full title is HRH Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

How many times has it been said on this board in relation to the giving/receiving of a dukedom, that you don't lose any titles, you gain them. He's still Prince William, she's now Princess William, just that he's a peer and will now be referred to by that peerage, as will she.

William is the first son of a Prince of Wales to marry since Queen Victoria's reign. Victoria's two eldest male-line grandsons were created Royal Dukes and the British monarchy usually follows tradition in these matters.

Given The Queen's good health and his father's vigor, it could be 15 years before William becomes The Duke of Cornwall. It makes sense for him to have a Dukedom of his own in the meantime.

Sister Morphine 04-29-2011 05:56 PM

They are as follows: TRH Prince and Princess William Arthur Philip Louis, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Earl and Countess of Strathearn, Baron and Baroness Carrickfergus. Because William was made a peer, he will now be known the senior most of those peerages, which is his ducal title. As his wife, she will be known by the feminine form of that title. So while they are still Prince and Princess William, they will be styled and referred to now as TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Which sounds damn regal.
