Michael, 1921–, king of Romania (1927–30, 1940–47). His father, Prince Carol (later Carol II), renounced his right of succession in 1925, and young Michael ascended the throne under a regency on the death of Ferdinand. However, in 1930 his father returned to be recognized as king. When Carol II abdicated in 1940, Michael once more became king. In 1944 he overthrew the dictatorship of Ion Antonescu and concluded an armistice with the Allies (see Romania). Conflicts with the Communist-dominated coalition government after World War II led to his abdication (Dec., 1947) and exile; he was stripped of his Romanian citizenship a year later. He married Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma in 1948. Since the collapse (1989) of Communist rule in Romania, he has visited the country; his citizenship was restored in 1997.

Today, King Michael signed "The new fundamental rules of the royal family of Romania," which opened the succession to women, with male preference. Princess Margarita is now styled "Crown Princess" and upon her father's death, she will be the future head of the family. Her husband, Prince Radu, is now entitled to the style of HRH Prince Radu of Romania, and the style HRH The Prince Consort when Margarita succeeds to the throne. Also, Princess Elena's son, Nicholas, will be given the title HRH Prince of Romania upon his 25th birthday, or upon the death of King Michael, whichever comes first. |

I was very interested to read the new 'Fundamental Rules' of the Royal House of Romania. It is clear, and makes sense in the modern era. It was also interesting to see that European Union rules made the old Salic law of male only succession unsupportable.

Queen Anne's interview
I saw that Eugenia Vada is going to interview Queen Anne on TVR 1 tonight? Could our Romanian posters post the interview on this forum? Thanks |
.
I saw it yesterday, unfortunately not from the beginning...
She spoke about herself, about her family the years of the war, her marriage with the king and a lot of other things. She spoke with great affection about his brother Jacques who died in a stupid car accident, about her mother-in-law, who was a role-model for her. About king Michael she said the he always had done his duty and he is a very honest and right man. |
Andrew,
Could you post a link to the interview so that we can watch it. How come the Queen cannot speak Romania. She has been living in Romania since 1999. Are her daughters fluent in Romanian? Is a restoratin of the monarchy likely to happen in Romania? Thanks |
.
Here's the text of the interview, but it is in Romanian...
HotNews.ro - Primul interviul al Reginei Ana: Cand l-am cunoscut pe Regele Mihai, nu stia cum se sta la coada la cinema - Esential I could't find a video yet... The Queen understands very well Romanian, I myself have spoken with her in Romanian and she speaks a bit, too; but I guess that she's afraid not to make many mistakes in Romanian, so she prefers French or English. She said that her motto is: "carpe diem"! |
Hi,
a small part of the interview is here: Singurul interviu acordat vreodată de Maiestatea Sa, Regina Ana a României - TVR . But she speaks in french and the translation is in romanian. |
