Info on National Day Luxembourg:

National Day
Since the end of the 18th century, it has been customary
in Luxembourg to celebrate the sovereign’s birthday.
During the long reign of Grand Duchess Charlotte from 1919
to 1964, this celebration always took place in mid-winter,
on 23 January, on the sovereign’s birthday.
In 1961, in particular due to the weather at that time of year,
it was decided to transfer the public celebration of the
sovereign’s birthday, and thus National Day, to the 23 June
of each year. Festivities commence on the evening before.
Since 23 December 1961, the National-Day celebrations have
been laid down in a grand-ducal decree. The term ”national
festival” does not figure in the legal texts, the day being described
instead as ”day of the official celebration of the anniversary
of the birth of the Grand Duke”.

More important Holidays in Luxembourg we should look out for photos on:

Liberation Day, September 9. Commemorates liberation by the Allies in World War II.
Burgsonndeg, February 28. Celebrates the end of winter with ancient customs.
Grand Duchess' Birthday, January 23. A holiday celebrated with parades and fireworks.

Public Holidays: New Year's Day, Easter Monday, All Saints' Day, Christmas, and Boxing Day.

Luxembourg's National Day: June 23, 2004

Fête nationale le 23 juin 2004
22-06-2004 - 23-06-2004

In picture five where Guillaume is clapping you can see his hand is on his right hand implying he is a lefty correct? I had no idea, what about his brothers and sister- righties or lefties?

WHOOPS! lol "his hand is on his right hand" I mean his watch is on his right hand, sorry!

Is the Grand Duke balding?

hrhcp 06-23-2004 09:16 PM

"Is the Grand Duke balding?"

Looks like the beginning of it .... receding a bit up front under his hair, and a bit of gap at the part.

Probably runs in the family .... you know ;) ... "male pattern baldness syndrome"!

kirstengrafin 06-23-2004 11:19 PM

Quote:

Is the Grand Duke balding?
Just my own opinion, of course, but I believe that the Grand Duke, regardless of the receding hairline, will always be a most elegant and aristocratic looking man. I think many women would agree that he represents "the complete package". ;)

I found some on yahoo. But they're in the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Plus, I'm not quite sure how to post them.

USCtrojan 06-28-2004 08:40 AM

Goto the photo that you have found online:

Right click the photo until you see a grey box with a list, go down to the last one "properties" and click on it. It will show a larger box with a location address starting with HTTP:// - copy (ctrl C) and paste it (ctrl V) into the https:// button at the top of this box that you are writing your message in.

You can also use the IMG button and we can come in a fix the photos making them links for you. I would love to see them. If they are on your hard drive, you can email them to me, I can post them on my photos archive and link them to the site to share as well.

It is up to you. I would be great to see them.

Thank You. Chanel

Its kind of like that. Its spread over a three day period. There are fireworks and stuff like that on one of the days. Another day there is a service at Notre Dame cathedral.

what usally happens on this day
are there several events they attend

gaggleofcrazypeople 12-30-2004 11:33 PM

It spans about three days. There are a couple of parades. There are fireworks. Vendors open up shops in little booths. There is also some sort of church cerimony. But it is not religous. It was GDess Charlotte's birthday.

hillary_nugent 12-30-2004 11:36 PM

SO have they changed it to Grand Duke Henri's birthday? ^__^

They've began celebrating National Day already with a tiara event!

Thanks to Marianne at the GREMB for the pictures [courtesy Seegerpress]. Guillaume and Henri look great, Maria-Teresa looks nice, wish she'd lose that white ruffle around her neck, but whatever.

Also, if anyone reads German, here's a link to Wort.lu's article on the Nationalfeiertag.

wow thanks for the pics...Guillaume's looking good...and the hair is not too bad either ^_^ were the other princes and princess alexandra there?

hey is it just me or does Guillaume have a skin rash or something?

msfroyste 06-23-2005 09:01 AM

thanks for the pics everyone. i'm not feeling the ruffle? thing mt's wearing to the gala, but i must say, she does look nice for the trip to ahnen - eventhough i think it's a little casual for the event. guillaume does look good. as for the skin rash, it does look that way, an allergic reaction to something, perhaps? i don't think he's lost any more weight, since the last time we saw updated pics of him - he does look a little bit trimmer since last national day, however. instead, i think it's the way he has his hair, which looks nice on him. he's giving felix a run for his money. hopefully, we'll see some pics of everyone else in the family.

Thank you so much everyone for the wonderful photos. Everyone looked absolutely lovely. I love the photos of Guillaume (!) when he was with the little girl. https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...hmentid=162327 https://www.theroyalforums.com/forums...hmentid=162328 Aww, he's so sweet, and so is she. :) MT's outfits (except the one with the white collar thing) were very nice. I can't load all the photos (darn the internet), but the pink one is really pretty on her. I don't know about the hat though. It looks okay but I don't know if it goes with the rest of it. How wonderful it would've been to be there.

Woo...that does look new! (At first I thought it was black stones and I was like pastels with black? What? Glad I was wrong...)

I'm very glad there are new pictures since they are pretty media-shy....Not shy, but not photographed as much as other royals, IMO.

msfroyste 06-24-2005 02:09 AM

i don't think it's new. on danjel's? royal jewelry site, it states that, at least the tiara, has been worn by her before, probably in the 80's and early 90's. same thing probably goes for the rest of the paure.

Fireweaver 06-24-2005 05:44 AM

Actually, it doesn't look anything like the other amethyst tiara/necklace that's in the family. I think she probably has a new set :)

msfroyste 06-24-2005 06:02 AM

oh well, mt could've used the original amethysts and simply had them reset/recut into something new. but the tiara looks the same, just without the diamonds. the earings are the same, and so is the bracelet - as i recall seeing all the above mentioned in some older pics of mt and marie-astrid. but the necklace could be new. *shrugs, i don't recall seeing it anywere. all in all, i think she looked nice, but probably should've worn lighter stones or added diamonds to make them pop.

hillary_nugent 06-24-2005 07:54 AM

well one thing is sure...the pink dress MT is alot nicer than her ruffly dress...by the way does anyone know what happened to Louis and Felix? they aren't in any of the pics...

I noticed that too. I think that the poor boy probably has allergies [summer pollen, perhaps] that were aggravated that day- which would also explain his face being broken out. I thought he was crying until I looked closer and noticed he was just wiping his eyes. :)

Luxembourg's National Day 2005

-22.06.2005: The day before-

Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume visited Esch/Alzette on 5.30 pm and was greeted by mayor Lydia Mutsch and minister of interior Jean-Marie Halsdorff for the celebrations of National Day in the small city Esch/Alzette.

Luxembourg city celebrated the Grand Ducal family traditionally with a big public festival on the eve of the National Day.
The National Day debuted with the official wreath laying on the "Monument aux morts de la force publique" on the "Kanounenhiwwel" (hill of cannons) and the changing of the guards in front of the Grand Ducal palace on the early afternoon before the Grand Ducal couple was visiting Ehnen, a village on the river Mosel.

In the dusk the members of clubs and organizations arrived near the "Gëlle Fra" (Golden Lady- a national monument of Luxembourg dating from the World War II and a symbol for freedom and independence;) )with torches and were moving towards the tribune with the honour guests (among them the Grand Ducal family without absent Prince Felix and Prince Louis). After the torch march the military music played under the leadership of lieutnant-colonel André Reichling two marches and the national anthem "Ons Heemecht" to honour the sovereign. Beautiful fireworks concluded the evening before the National Day.

-The National Day 23.06.2005-

According to tradition the official celebrations of the Natioonal Day were introduced with the "Prise d'armes" of Luxembourg's army on 9.30 am. With participating members of Luxembourg's army and police in this military parade, who took place with the 60th anniversary of the liberation and the 50th birthday of the military center of Luxembourg, the Grand Ducal family is honoured and its a symbol of respect and loyalty towards the population.

For Grand Duke Henri it has been the fifth "Prise d'arme" since his throne achievement in October 2002 and for his oldest son Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume it was the third time, that he accompanied his father to greet the troops.

The miltary parade was followed by the traditional Te Deum mass in the Cathedrale Our Lady in Luxembourg starting on 11 o'clock with Grand Duke Henri, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Princess Alexandra and Prince Sebastien being present as well as Lord Chamberlain Jean-Jacques Kasel, aumônier Georges Vuillermoz, lady-in-waiting Danièle Wagner and Captain Gery Mevers. The archbishop Fernand Ranck remembered Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte who has left us in January 2005.

I love Grand Duchess Maria Teresa!
Her face is always glowing with happiness and satisfaction.

Allthough she doesn't belong to the "Tall and Thin Club" she managed to adjust her body type to clothes that suits her very very well.

Good for her!
Regards to you all.

First, welcome, la fracaise, keep posting!

Second, I give you all this much: the guy definitely improves as the time goes by. What a difference from, say, Josephine-Charlotte's funeral.

And third, has anyone seen the latest Point de Vue? Couple weeks ago it had a page-sized pic of Felix, and I just thought they might have something about the national day too...

-Lisa ;)

I SAW THIS ON A LUXEMBOURG NEWS PAPER IS FUNNY, I'D LIKE TO SHARE IT WITH YOU GUYS,YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN IT BEFORE BUT ANYWAYS...

6/17/06
A Bangkok fruiterer had the proudest day of her life when she impressed a visiting monarch with her durians and her love for His Majesty the King.

Banchong Chuernklin, 47, of Noinan Fruits in Aor Tor Kor Market, met Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg when he stopped by on Monday.

"He looked at durians on the stall and seemed to be interested, but his entourage warned him that they might cause diarrhoea, but when I told him through his interpreter that he could taste one, he said he'd like to," she said.

She cleaned a knife and peeled him one.

"He picked it up in his hand, tasted it and said it was delicious," she said.

After offering him a mangosteen, which he also liked, Banchong told his entourage that she would like him to have them free of charge, but they said

they could not possibly impose on her.

The Grand Duke bought four kilograms of durian for Bt1,000, and she included other fruits free of charge.

"He asked me why, and I said: 'You are most welcome as the guest of my dearly beloved King.' When it was translated I saw him smile," she said.

The next day, to her surprise, a police officer called and told her that the Grand Duke had been most impressed by her words about His Majesty and by the love that Thais bore for their King.
"I'm so glad. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience for an ordinary person like me to meet a foreign monarch," said Banchong. "I hope he comes to Thailand again."
