Recent Royals: Age They Got Married

What is the age of the royals in recent years when they get married?

I believe all of the heirs were well over 30 (except Haakon) when they got married and the umarried one (Victoria) is already over 30. Have any of the heirs to the throne been younger than that when getting married in recent memory?

Empress Merel 01-19-2009 07:51 AM

Good question, I can't really think of anyone who married under the 30.

MAfan 01-19-2009 08:51 AM

Mathilde of Belgium was 26;
Rodolphe de Limburg-Stirum is 29, and his wife Marie Christine is 25;
Louis of Luxembourg was 20, and his wife was 21.

iakynthi 01-19-2009 11:36 AM

Pavlos was 27 and Marie-Chantal 26 when they got married in 1995 :flowers:
But I guess all these royals are the exceptions to the rule.Most of them usually get married over 30 nowadays,just like most of the common people.

MAfan 01-19-2009 11:55 AM

Sophie (26) and Alois (25) vuz Liechtenstein;
Marie Caroline (22) and Philipp (27) von Wurttemberg;
Constantin (27) and Maria (24) vuz Liechtenstein.

Why do you think Harry should be in his dotage before he gets married? It didn't work so well for the PoW.

Royal Fan 02-20-2009 06:38 PM

well true but also he needs to grow up a bit..JMHO

Victoria's mother, queen Sylvia was almost 33 when he married 4 years younger Carl Gustav.

Caroline of Monaco married young. She was 21 when married Philippe Junot and 26 when married Stefano Casiraghi.

Maybe he just needs the right woman. :lol: Just joking.

Actually, I think Harry has an unexpected interest in monogamy, given that his relationship with Chelsy lasted so long. But it might be difficult to find a young woman willing to tolerate the intrusion into her own life and possessing the ability to rein him in a little. And he probably needs some time to get over Chelsy and concentrate on his career, especially since he failed his helicopter exams. I hope he's successful at finding the right one, I think he could be seriously derailed by a bad marriage.

Most of the royals who marry seem to be in the age range of late twenties to mid-thirties. Early thirties seems to be the norm if you put the ages all together. When Prince Harry marries, he will be probably be in this age range. I don't see him marrying before this time.

When you marry someone, there are certain things that you accept when you marry that person. Some things are just part of the package and you either accept this or you don't. If they are certain things that you would have difficulty with or coping with, then one needs to step back and think things through before entering a marriage. I know that's easier said than done.

IloveCP 04-18-2011 04:50 AM

It looks like all of the CPs were "old brides"(over 30)minus Mette Marit and Mathilde.But I understand Victoria took her time to get married because she thought about Daniel.Among lots of reasons,he was fully aware that he couldnt work when he married.Im pretty sure he loves his job so he wanted to enjoy the last years of his job.

King William III of the Netherlands was 61 when he married Emma of Waldeck Pyrmont; they're the parents of Queen Wilhelmina. Emma was the king's second wife. His first wife, Sophie of Wurttemburg died after giving him 3 sons, all of whom didn't survive to adulthood. He was 22 when he married Sophie.

Late 20's to Early 30's seems to be the norm for marriage.

Prince Bertil of Sweden was 64 years old when he married Lilian Craig, who was 61 years old, his first and her second marriage on December 7, 1976. They had met in 1943 and lived together since 1946.

MAfan 08-10-2011 05:03 PM

Dom Duarte Pio, the Duke of Bragança, was 50 when he married to the 29-y-o Isabel de Heredia in 1995.

nascarlucy 08-10-2011 08:10 PM

Prince Bertil waited a long time to marry 30 years. Was it because Lillian wasn't royal or royal enough?

COUNTESS 08-10-2011 08:32 PM

She was divorced and she wasn't royal. He waited until his nephew, the King, married Sylvia and had children, as he was the heir. Bertil and Lillian are a true love story. Very beautiful.

Teresa of the Two Sicilies was 21 when she married Emperor Pedro II of Brazil in 1843. He was 17, and she was considered an old maid!

King Bhumibol Adulyadej was 22 years old (he turned 23 later on December 5) when he married to Queen Sirikit, who was then aged 17 (she turned 18 later on August 12), on April 28, 1950.

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg was 25 years old (he turned 26 later on April 16) when he married Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, who was then aged 24 (she turned 25 later on March 22), on February 14, 1981.

50 even now is considered old for a first marriage. There have been a rare occasion in history. Recently?? Albert as you said and Prince Bertil but we know why he waited till he was so old. Second or third marriage at an advanced age was common.

George III's sons did. After the death of Charlotte, his unmarried sons rushed to marry. They were older in life when they did, more then 1 over 50

-William IV was 53 when he married Adelaide
-Victoria's dad was 51 when he married her mother, in a double ceremony with William and Adelaide.
-Ernst August was 44 when he married Frederica
-Adolphus was 44 when he married Augusta

Of the sons who married (seven married, 2 died in childhood) only 2 married before 40. Well 3, but Augustus of course married without royal consent. George IV was 33 when he married Caroline. Frederick was 28.

Many of their wives were also older for those days, though not a 1st marriage for a few. Frederica (Ernst's wife) was 37 (3rd husband), Adelaide was 26 (was her first), Victoria was 32 (2nd marriage). Frederica (Frederick's wife) was 24. Caroline was 27. Augusta was only 20.

Alexandre of Belgium was 49 when he married Lea Wolman in 1991. She was 40.

Two more examples:
Fürst Wittekind zu Waldeck un Pyrmont was 52 when he married, in 1988, Countess Cecilie von Goëß-Saurau, who was then 32.
Fürst Johannes von Thurn und Taxis in 1980 was 54 when he married Countess Gloria von Schönburg-Glauchau, aged just 20.
