The ROYAL PALACE IN MADRID has some similarity imo in size and location with Buckingham Palace in London, and the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

Josefine 04-23-2004 05:54 AM

I have been to the palace in Madrid
it was big.......very much like a city palace

carlota 04-25-2004 03:13 AM

madrid royal palace is available for visitors. an interesting and an obligatory sight of madrid, really.

here you can find photos of all the palaces that the royal household can visit for private use. and let me tell you that each of them has really interesting stories... for example in zarzuela palace stood saddam hussein in an official visit to spain (i think it was during francisco franco's 'dictadura'). also, in san lorenzo del escorial, which was built by order of felipe ii of spain, are the tombs of all the kings and queens since that generation and la almudaina was the palace where we've seen letizia and felipe go to the easter celebrations this month.

(enter where it says 'palacios y reales sitios')

Julian 05-03-2004 08:57 PM

Does anyone know when was the last time the King and Queen actually appeared on the balcony of the Royal Palace?

Also, are Prince Felipe and his new bride scheduled to appear on this balcony or some other after their wedding ceremony May 26?

:P

carlota 05-04-2004 08:43 AM

It's confirmed that letizia and felipe will appear on the balcony

Julian 05-04-2004 09:41 PM

Carlota, thank you for the information, I'm sure it will be a great moment of the day when they appear! Hopefully, all the royal family will also come out sometime too... ;)

saxon 05-12-2004 12:46 AM

does the Royal Family use this palace much?....

carlota 05-12-2004 09:22 AM

not very much... that's a pity due to the beauty of it... in my opinion one of spain's most beautiful palaces

The Palacio Real in Madrid is huge and very spectacular, with all its grandeur, it is something that the royal family and the spanish people can be proud of.Its just a waste and a real pity that the royal family cannot occupy the space I think the King and Queen should live there. If I were a Spanish national, I wouldnt mind if our royal family live there, the palace will be more significant if the present royal family lives there, not just a tourist attraction or a remembrance of the royal family's wealth in the past..and in my opinion the Palacio Real is a better place for receiving Heads of States rather then the smaller and simpler Zarzuela palace..I believe the King and Queen love Zarzuela and its their choice to be there, so I respect that..but just my opinion, I hope the succeeding Kings of Spain should use the Palacio Real as their base..The palace is really beautiful, and its outside interior ( the palace's facade) is more impressing than Buckingham Palace.I think its a pity that the royal family cant live there, the fact that it is located at the heart of the Spanish capital city. The King should live and base his office where the seat of the government is.

When the Princes become Kings they will change the faces on the chairs, right?
But if the King died first, the Queen would have a chair like this?

Thanks in advance :flowers:

The ceilings in the giant Royal Palace are just breathtaking! The red throne room is gorgeous too with it's beautiful chandeliers.

But the Zarzuela... no offense but it doesn't even look like a palace. I'm sure it's a nice enough home but the swimming pool looks like it could be anyone's backyard, although it's nice that they have a pool. What is that white building in the last pics - another side of the Zarzuela?
Well, it's a shame the King & Queen can't take a second home (like other royalty seem to do) and live part-time in one of the other "real" palaces, like the LaGranja or Aranjuez (sp?) or what's the other one called...

Anyway, I thought I read somewhere that when Prince Felipe becomes monarch that his residence will become the new official Palace. Anyone know if it's true?

The Sabatini Gardens

The Sabatini Gardens are part of the Madrid Royal Palace. The Gardens were opened to the public by King Juan Carlos in 1978. They were built in 1933, in the exact location of the royal stables which were designed by Sabatini.

The Gardens are free acces to the public, every days.

How come the SRF does not reside in the Palacio Real. I know they prefer a much smaller place but one a little bit bigger and grand should be the residence of the monarch. Is the SRF the only RF who's been residing in a smaller palace/castle?

MAfan 03-05-2010 10:35 AM

Also the Belgian and the Swedish Royal Families don't live in the Royal Palaces of Bruxelles and Stockholm respectively.

Yes, but they do live in grand palaces like the Swedish royal family. They live in Drottningholm Palace and it is very huge and grand. If I'm not mistaken the Belgian RF lives in a huge castle too. What's the name?

MAfan 03-06-2010 10:26 AM

Only Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde live in the "big" castle in Laeken; King Albert and Queen Paola live in a small palace in Laeken Park, the Chateau de Belvedere, where they are living since their marriage. Queen Fabiola lives in the Chateau de Stuyvenberg, also a small palace in Laeken park, while Prince Lorenz and Princess Astrid live in a villa in Laeken park as well.

Interesting.
It does look the same. It might be extra carpet they had an kept or it could be from the staircase but I would think it would be too long and them not wanting to cut it.

At least I know I'm not the only one who saw the resemblance ;) I guess we'll never know where the carpet really came from to bad :(

It was their own decision not to live there, they prefered Zarzuela Palace. Royal Palace of Madrid is massive, the photographs don't make justice, the place is really overwhelming. They only used it for state ceremonies, official receptions ... It's the biggest Royal Palace of Europe, I understand why the royals doesn't want to live there.

But for me, the most beautiful Royal Palaces of Spain is "La Granja de Sal Ildefonso" and Royal Palace of Aranjuez, and Royal Palace of Madrid of course.

The Royal Palace of Madrid has a new room open to visitors. The Lounge Maria Cristina now called Crown Room. The Crown and royal scepter are exhibited to the public for the first time. Also found in the room: the original throne of King Carlos III, the Golden Fleece, the table of sphinxes, document abdication of King Juan Carlos I and the first speech of King Felipe VI.

The Palace of Versailles has a Hall of Mirrors. However it is not the only palace which has this. The Royal Palace of Madrid also has a Hall of Mirrors. King Charles IV was responsible for the Spanish Hall of Mirrors.
It was informative to learn that the Royal Palace was inspired by sketches made by Bernini for the construction of the Louvre in Paris.

The cutlery is from Alfonso XII reign (except for the fish cutlery, it wasn't used then and it was purchased for his son's Alfonso XIII wedding). The dinner service and the glassware were renovated during Juan Carlos reign, the only thing that has been bought during the still short reign of Felipe VI are the tablecloths

Its nothing short of a miracle that the silver cutlery service from Alfonso XII/III survived the turmoil that ensued following the exile of the SRF!
