On the terrain of the present Huize de Paauw Cornelis Arentsz van der Dussen built a retreat in 1556 that he called 'Te Pau'. The terrain was only 9ha. at that time, but later he bought some extra land. In 1581 his daughter Catharine interited the house, she was married to Pieter van der Goes and enlarged the estate to 50ha. Afterwards the estate had several owners, among them Adamus van Halfwassenaar, lord of Stad aan 't Haringvliet. His heirs sold the estate in 1747 to Adriaan Pieter Twent. Twent demolished the original house and built a classiccountry house instead. The heirs of Twent sold this estate together with the estates 'De Raephorst and Estate 'ter Horst' in 1838 to prince Frederik of the Netherlands, 2nd son of King Willem I. The prince named the estate 'De Paauw' and lived here with his family. His daughter Fürstin Marie of Wied inherited the estate in 1881. After she died in 1910 the estate was sold. In 1925 the city of Wassenaar bought the estate and used the country house as city hall.

In 1858 the facade of the oldest part of the De Paauw house got a tighter appearance because the top floor was straightened.
