Solliden Palace, Öland

Solliden Palace

Solliden, an Italian-style white palace, was built by Queen Victoria of Sweden in 1903 and completed in 1906, and is still used as a summer residence by the Swedish Royal Family.
Solliden Palace is located on the island of Öland, in southern Sweden.
There is a tradition of passing the Palace down through the senior royals/monarchs of the country, while still allowing use of the Palace to other members of the Royal Family.

Thanks for posting the pics of the sea-pavillon, I´ve never seen it from the air before

Yennie 08-07-2003 02:26 PM

I visited Solliden yesterday. It was a beautiful park.. as usual =)
And this years show about King Carl Gustafs 30 years as king of Sweden was very interesting. Many never before seen pictures and fun items. Worth seeing!

Unfortunately I missed the royals by minutes =( It would have been nice to see them..
but other than that it was a great day!

Gita 08-08-2003 01:53 PM

Hi Yennie! Which members of the royal Family are at Solliden at the moment? :flower:

Yennie 08-08-2003 03:09 PM

I´m not sure.. I think the royal couple are in St Maxime and someone on this board saw Princess Madeleine in Stockholm a few days ago.. so maybe Carl Philip and Victoria?

EDIT: Victoria, Carl Philip and Madeleine are all in Sweden at the moment and they attended their friend Andreas wedding on saturday the 9th of august.

Also: how come the Norwegian royal family has about an equal number of approximately 3 to 4 private and official residences each, and the Swedish royal family - being in a larger country and supposedly richer - makes do with only one private residence
The royal family has one more cottage, in Tärnaby I think. And king Carl Gustaf owns Solliden on Öland aswell.
But all the other palaces, like Drottningholm, is owned by the state.

hrhcp 09-16-2003 10:59 AM

Thank you for correcting me on the ownership of Solliden. And what is the correct spelling "Solliden" or "Soliden"?

Yennie 09-26-2003 10:47 AM

It´s amazing... very "summerish" =)
I can understand why the royal family loves Solliden so much

hrhcp 09-26-2003 11:38 AM

Yennie,
very nice pictures.

any idea what the inside looks like?

Haakon2

ps: I think even the broom closet would be nice to stay in.

Yennie 09-26-2003 02:00 PM

Very few pictures of Solliden from the inside has been released. I´ve only seen two of them. I´ve seen a picture of the dining room and one of the main hall...
I know that the house has an "english style". Its very dark and "woody" (can´t remember the word in english!)
Its all designed by Queen Victoria in the early 1900´s

Josefine 04-19-2004 10:31 AM

will solliden be given to Victoria or also to Carl Philip and Madeleine?

Yennie 04-19-2004 11:10 AM

I think it will go to Victoria, since its tradition that the monarch(?!) lives there.
Just like the King owns it today instead of his older sisters

Lena 04-20-2004 01:53 PM

I wonder, if Solliden is registered in the land charge register as "castle"??...to me it looks more like a big country house or a Villa...

Yennie 04-20-2004 03:09 PM

I agree. But the "officiall" name is Sollidens slott (Solliden castle/palace)
But maybe it would be more right to call it a mansion or something like that...

Dennism 04-20-2004 05:09 PM

It does look like a villa. Kind of like La Zarzuela Palace which used to be a hunting lodge and looks more like a villa than a palace.

hrhcp 04-21-2004 04:42 PM

imo, too bad its not at the north or south end of Gotland .... imagine the secludedness, the wide expanse of beach and hinterland, the waves lapping and conflicting as does the wind.

BTW how big is the land called Solliden ? How many hectares?
And is it fenced off from other properties on the land side?

Yennie 04-22-2004 05:50 PM

Yes it is... and parts of the garden are private and the visitors are not allowed to go there.

hrhcp 04-22-2004 09:06 PM

That's too bad Yennie .... you couldn't sneak in with your camera, and we were so counting on you. :P

ps, sorry about the crappy quality, but hey, better than nothing!

Thank you very much for posting this, Yennie :flower: Are these pics vid-caps?

Isn´t the beach house the "summer-home" of Victoria (& Daniel)? I mean is it true, that Victoria lives there or is there, when she (& Daniel) want(s) to be alone?

Yennie 06-10-2004 05:20 PM

well, its not really vid caps. I took pictures of the tv screen with my digital camera.

I know that the rf spends a lot of time there but I´m not sure if one can sleep over in the beach house. But if so, I´m sure the princesses and the prince use it sometimes :P

Lena 06-10-2004 05:28 PM

Well, it seems to be a quite big beach house (it even looks bigger than the lodge/cottage in Storlien)...so there´s a high chance that there are rooms, where one can sleep (of course only sleeping and watching TV or playing chess, talking about god and the world... :P )

BTW an very clever idea to photograph the TV-screen!!

GrandDuchess 06-10-2004 05:44 PM

I dont remember really... I have it on video.
But the programme was made in the summer of 2001 so I think it was shown on tv in the fall.
It was a special programme about Solliden and it showed the king, queen and Victoria doing various things in the garden. I´ve never seen "so much" of Solliden before either...

There´s one inside photo in the book "Sommarslottet" Its from the dining room...
and in a SVT special about the palace they showed the hall and there were paintings of Victoria, Carl Philip and Madeleine on the wall

I think there is a cottage close to the palace. And inside there are several guestrooms.

Yes, Crown Princess Victoria will one day inherit Solliden if they stick to the tradition of passing it one through the senior royals and/or monarchs (and I take it as a given that the tradition will be kept). But of course others will still have access to it, just as it is today when the whole Royal Family uses it as well as more distant members of the family.

It is a very beautiful place, both the palace and the garden are amazing. Its easy to understand why the royal family likes the place. The sorroundings are also very pretty and Borgholm (the town close to Solliden) is very nice (but very little!)

Daniel and Victoria will build a house as their summer residence at Solliden
Victoria y Daniel de Suecia tendrán su propia residencia de verano

LadyFinn 09-25-2011 11:37 PM

SvenskDam wrote two weeks ago that Victoria and Daniel will build an own family summer villa at Solliden. The villa would be in a separate and peaceful place and it would of course be child friendly.
Victoria och Daniel bygger egen familjevilla | Svensk Damtidning

I read from the paper version of finnish Iltalehti, which quotes SvenskDam. Victoria and Daniel build their new villa to Hjörthägnet-area behind the Solliden castle, to the northwest. Their villa will be about 300 meters from the Solliden Castle at a very leafy and forested area. That´s why the place is perfect for the couple, they want their privacy and the thick leafy-tree forest prevents the looks of curious people. The elks have their pasture at Hjörthägnet, so the couple and their children can see elks from their windows.
Victoria and Daniel want to take special care to that the villa suits to the historical surroundings in the right way. They have bought materials to the villa from the local craftsmen. Both grey and red limestones, which are familiar in Öland, are used to the villa. The building will start in just a few weeks, and it is estimated to be ready in March.
Victoria ja Daniel: Jättihuvila vauvalle | Viihde | Iltalehti.fi

Already last year it was rumored that crown princess Victoria and prince Daniel had plans to build a summer house on Sollidens domains. And now it seems to be going on, even if no building permit documents have not yet been submitted.
- The building has been discussed for some time, but we have not received any application for planning permission, said city architect Leo Eriksson.
- It is not certain that the drawings will be public, Solliden is classified as a protected property.
However, the construction company Folke Nilsson has had contact with the crown princess couple. But Robert Nilsson wants to play down any information that they received the assignment.
- We have been contacted, but not more than that.

how far has the plans got to, have they started to build?

LadyFinn 06-22-2012 03:55 AM

Victoria and Daniel haven't yet submitted an application for a building permit for their new summer house in Solliden.

According to the documentation, the new building to be over 400 square meters on one level - plus a proper pool, only a few hundred meters from the sea.
- It may sound strange, but is rather moderate. A quite ordinary villa for a family with children, says the Director of Administration of Solliden, Leo Eriksson, who is also the city architect of Borgholm's municipality.
The Crown Princess couple has given green light for construction from the municipality and the county administrative board in Kalmar. The decision means an exemption from the shoreline protection, but any application for a building permit the couple have not yet submitted.
- It may simply be that they are busy with their new baby right now, said Borgholm's City Planning Director George Borgo.
Leo Eriksson says:
- You get an idea about how they see the case through documents in the waiver request. They will build in one level considering the surroundings, they do not want anything bulky in height which may interfere with the skyline and the view of the scenic area.
He explains that the impressive building area, 407 square meters, also includes garages, storage and other ancillary rooms.
- The family will project the real estate in peace and quiet. For me as a city architect, it is just one of many planned summer homes on the island, and by no means the largest or most expensive.
Bertil Ternert from the court press department says:
- They thrive on Solliden and we can rejoice in their desire to develop the property. It is a totally private castle owned by the royal family, which receives no state funding but is financed by the activities carried out there, primarily tourism.

The first spadework has been done for the Crown Princess Couple's new house. The royal architect Leo Eriksson says that the whole royal family is happy. Bertil Ternert says that the Crown Princess family can be established as summer residents of Öland. The current castle is private and this is another family.

The house is built in a traditional style and will be away from the castle. But exactly how it will look like is a secret, all drawings are confidential. The Royal Family has permission to build 100 meters from the beach. The municipality has granted a building permit for 328 square feet, but the house will probably be smaller. Eriksson tells that the house will be approximately 200-300 square feet. When you ask for a building permit, we ask for more than what you have in mind to build initially.
The house is planned to be ready for next winter, but there is still no concrete date. And it will probably take even longer before the surrounding area is clear. Besides the house there will be a garden, a pool that is meant to be shared with the royal couple and a carport. Eriksson says that it has been a tough winter with lots of snow. They probably want to move in as soon as possible, they will probably be able to move in next summer.
Borgholms councilor, Lisbeth Lennartsson says that people in Borgholm are excited to have the royal family here and thinks it is important that they can be private.

The website of the Solliden Palace has been renewed.
Sollidens Slott

LadyFinn 07-27-2013 07:57 AM

Leo Eriksson, the Director of Administration of Solliden, who is also the city architect of Borgholm's municipality, told in Svensk Damtidning some weeks ago that Solliden is more a nordic villa with a big hall surrounded by rooms. There has been very few renovations, an exception is the guest bathroom princess Sibylla ordered to be done. Eriksson says that the palace is very simple. It is well done, well planned and it works even for a modern family. Eriksson estimates that according to the ground plan the size is about 400 square metres, but when you take away the thick tile walls, corridors with angles, tile stoves and stairs, the living space is less that 200 square metres. They almost never use the representation stairs, but the royal family goes by the stairs the servants used before. Eriksson planned the bath house which was a 40th birthday present for the king. Other architects were involved but no one but Eriksson understood the wishes of the royal couple so well as him. Eriksson has grown up near Solliden, so he understands the simplicity of the whole palace area. The bath house is important for the royal family. Eriksson says that the security of the royal family in Solliden became much more strict after the murder of Olof Palme, and the royal family doesn't like it, but so it is.
Before their own house was ready, Victoria and Daniel have geen staying at "Kavaljersflygeln", a over 110 years old wooden house with three floors. The royal family stays there at the winter when they visit Solliden, because it is much easier to heat than the Solliden Palace.

Yes, it is a lovely place, for visitors. And family when the park isn't open. The park is open May 15 – Sept 15 from 11 am to 6 pm. And if the royal family don't want to get photographed, they stay at the Palace or spend the day at the boathouse at the shore. And Victoria and Daniel at their own house of course.

At Solliden, like in the whole Öland, is on 8th-10th May "Öland Spirar!" Weekend. The visitors have been let in to some private parts of the park, which is not normally open to visitors. They show the private orchard, greenhouses and beekeeping. Also guided tours have been arranged during the weekend.
At Kaffetorpet the spring menu and homemade pastries from their own bakery is served. The Gift Shop is filled with this year's novelties.

Anna Schibli, Director of Tourism at Solliden Palace has given a mission to Charlotte Rosén and Susanna Stenborg to do an essay about the Solliden Palace.
The thesis aims to investigate the image that Solliden Palace has, and the picture that local regional tourist offices have of the Sollidens Castle brand and what position Solliden include in these markets.
The essay is mainly in swedish. Anna Schibli has been interviewed and she has said that even though a lot of people visit Solliden every year, there should be more visitors because Solliden is a well-known brand, that is why she has given this mission to Rosén and Stenborg. The essay is dated 27th May 2015.

Anna Schibli started as the Director of Tourism of Solliden for three years ago. Her most important task is to ensure that the visitors enjoy, in addition to taking strategic and economic decisions and be responsible for the company. Schibli tells that she wants Solliden be perceived as a place where it happens a lot, there's something for everyone, so visitors stay longer on the site. Schibli explains, however, that she believes that most tourists have a fairly uncertain picture of Solliden Palace, that they are unsure of what they get. The past three years, there has been a business development at Solliden, where they have tried to analyze everything they have done well and what has not been done so well, and developed a number of new events during the summer season.
One thing that is important to consider, Schibli says, is partly that the visitors enjoy their stay and have a good time, but also that the Royal Family must thrive on Solliden. If the royal family don't have a good time in Solliden, so that they would not like staying at Solliden, which would lead to that Solliden only has a park.

Östra Småland has an article "The king is losing millions in Solliden", but you can only read it if you pay. The king has lost more than four millions in the last two years at his wholly-owned company that runs Solliden. The company runs among other things Kaffetorpet and souvenir sales.

Running Solliden is not profitable at the moment, the costs are higher than income.

Solliden is owned by the king. Who would inherit it when he passes? Would it go to Victoria because she would be the new sovereign?

eya 08-03-2015 06:31 AM

:previous: I suppose more logical is to inherit Victoria. But i don't understad why make her own summer house there?

Because Solliden Palace isn't very big. I have read from Svensk Damtidning that the Palace consists of three floors. The ground floor consists of household premises. The second floor consists of an entrance hall, salon, dining room and a guest room. A staircase leads up from the entrance hall to the third floor, there is a bedroom, salon and one room. In the attic there are some additional smaller rooms. Before Victoria and Daniel didn't have their own house there, they stayed at Kavaljershuset, where Madeleine and her family, Carl Philip and Sofia and the guests of the royal family are now staying in the summer. Kavaljershuset is about 500 square meters and has three floors. According to swedish press, the king and queen are also staying at Kavaljershuset, if they are in Solliden in the winter.
Victoria and Daniel clearly like to spend a lot of time in Solliden and perhaps the Palace is nowadays quite uncomfortable for a family. Maybe they were thinking that the king and queen can spend at least 10-15 years there in the future, so they built their own, new house to be able to enjoy their time in Solliden. The Kavaljershuset will also be quite crowded, if Carl Philip and Sofia will have some children and Madeleine and Chris will have more children.

And because the Palace Park is from 16th May until 15th September open for public from 11.00 to 18.00, the royal family normally isn't according to the press at the Palace at that time, they are at the boat house, or Kavaljershuset. But Victoria, Daniel and Estelle can be at their own summer house.

Good points. :flowers: It's a question why every royal hasn't built their own house, given the above.

Maybe they don't want to put their money to a new house where they would spend only some weeks in a year. Carl Philip and Sofia spend a lot of time at Carl Philip's summer house in Ökenäs, it is only about an hour away from Stockholm. And he has a cottage in Sunne. Madeleine and Chris are living abroad and have at least before having children liked to travel in Europe meeting their friends.
Victoria and Daniel have told that they want to go to Solliden as often as it is possible. They spend some days a year with Daniel's family at the little summer house in Acktjära, which Olle Westling built in 2006 beside his summer house.

Leo Eriksson, the Director of Administration of Solliden, told to Svensk Damtidning some weeks ago, that the king and queen have been very involved with the renovations made to the Palace during the years. As soon one shows the technical drawing to the king, he sees the big picture. And the queen as eye to technical solutions. The king and queen want to keep the Palace intact and very easy and modest, there isn't any luxury in it. When the staff of the kitchen at Drottningholm Palace arrives to Solliden, they are staying at so called drivers' house. Eriksson tells also that the royal children still have their rooms at the Palace, although they are not staying there. He has never seen a TV at the Palace, or at any of the guest houses at the Palace area. While the Palace park is open for public, the family is staying at the boat house, Kavaljershuset or Victoria's and Daniel's summer house. There is a big table at the boat house, it can take thirty people.
Eriksson tells that Estelle and Leonore are playing at the old playhouse of the Haga princesses and that there is already a secret path which is planned to be named after the children of Carl Philip and Sofia. There are already prinsessan Estelles promenad (princess Estelle's promenade) and prinsessan Leonores promenad from Solliden to Borgholm. Eriksson thinks that it is great that Victoria and Daniel have chosen to establish themselves to the Solliden estate, and he hopes that Carl Philip and Sofia will do that too.

Svensk Damtidning writes that the Palace is about 400 square meters. It is white outside but not so light at the inside at all with a lot of dark wood used at the Palace.
