August 2008 Newsletter: The Summer Olympics
We’re entering August. The eighth month of the year, and on August 8, in China, the Olympic games opens.
Pierre de Coubertin, the man who is seen as the founder of the modern Olympic games, is reputed to have said, in regards to the games: “L'important n'est pas de gagner, mais de participer” The important thing is not to win, but to participate.
Whether you cheer for swimmer Natalie du Toit of South Africa, Princess Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg riding for Denmark, the Norwegian handball team, the Australian softball team, the Dutch baseball team, the American football teams, the Brazilian volley ball teams, or any of the other participants at the games - we hope you enjoy this month's newsletter, focusing on the Summer Olympics.
The Newsletter team
This replaces the Buddy List from the previous version. You can add another member as a Contact via the Contacts & Friends link in your User CP or via the Friends box on their profile page. You can also choose to send a request to befriend that member. If they accept, you'll show up in the Friends box in each other's profiles. On the list of members online, your friends and contacts will have a + by their names.
Your User CP has a new option for private messages (accessed from the Edit Options link), where you can elect to receive PMs only from friends and contacts (as well as moderators and admins) rather than being able to receive PMs from the entire membership.
You now have the option to post messages to other members on their profile page and to let other members post on your profile page, and you can respond to their messages on your profile page. You can edit messages that you've left on your own profile page but not messages that you've left for other members; also, you can delete messages left by yourself or others on your profile page. Please remember that visitor messages are public and can be read by any member looking at the profile page where you've left the message. The forum rules about appropriate content, copyright, and spam also apply to visitor messages.
You can leave messages either by posting directly into the box or by clicking the Send Message link under the member's username on the profile page. The Send Message link is a drop-down menu for sending private messages, visitor messages, and e-mails. Since visitor messages are public, it's important not to confuse the Private Message and Visitor Message options in the drop-down menu. If you leave a public visitor message by mistake when you meant to send a PM, you can contact the recipient of the message or any member of the mod team and ask them to delete it.
If you don't wish to have visitor messages on your profile, or if you only want to receive them from your friends and contacts, you can do this at your User CP (via the Edit Options link - the options for visitor messages are right under the ones for PMs).
This feature allows members to create groups where people with similar interests can chat among themselves. The groups can be public, in which case anyone can join and the messages are visible to anyone; invitation-only, in which case you have to be invited to join and the messages are visible only to group members, moderators, and admins; or moderated, in which case you have to apply for membership to a public group and the creator of the group has to approve your membership. Anyone can start a group, and the topic doesn't have to be royalty related although it can be. So this is an opportunity for fans of a particular princess to get together to chat about her without being interrupted by haters of said princess, and it's an opportunity for the people who want to sit and tell each other how hot Pierre Casiraghi is to indulge their hormones to their hearts' content without getting into trouble for writing empty posts. The groups can also be used by people with similar non-royal interests and experiences to chat about a particular topic, and they can be used as support groups by people who want to chat in private but prefer the format of a forum rather than PMs.
You can see a list of groups in the Quick Links drop-down menu at the top of the page and also in your User CP, under Networking -> Social Groups. Under the list of groups is a link where you can create a group of your own. You can join a group by visiting the group and clicking the Join Group link at the top right.
Unlike threads, there's no subscription option for the groups, so you'll have to check from time to time to see if anyone has added messages; you won't be receiving e-mail notification of contributions to groups where you're a member. The social groups don't have a lot of features yet, and we'll probably see more features and functionality being added with later upgrades of the software.
The forum rules generally also apply to group message content. We're applying the no-bashing and no-fighting rule, the rule about obscene and vulgar content, and the copyright rule on posting of photos; the same criteria being used in the Ask BeatrixFan thread for medical and legal advice (i.e., please be careful about asking for help or advice on these topics since they're subjects where you should be consulting professionals) also apply to the groups. For most groups we're applying the English-only rule; however, groups for members from a particular country or region can include messages in that language. We prefer for foreign-language groups to have a moderator as a member, but as long as we don't get any complaints about the content, there shouldn't be any problems. For the moment we're allowing groups on religious and political topics, but if we start getting complaints about them, we might have to reconsider that decision. So go ahead and start up a group on a topic of interest, and enjoy!
Although this version of the forum software includes the ability to have photo albums on profile pages as you probably know if you're a member of other vbulletin forums, we've decided not to enable this option. We can't take the risk of having members fill their albums with copyrighted photos of their favourite royals and landing us in legal trouble with photographers and photo agencies.
This version of the software allows tags (short descriptions of the thread topic) to be added to the threads by the thread starter and the moderation team. The list of tags for each thread can be found in a box below the thread. Each tag is a link which, when clicked, leads to a list of other threads with the same tag, making it a very easy way to find related threads anywhere in the forum.
If you click the "Tags" link at the top of the box containing the tags, you'll be taken to a page that contains a "tag cloud": a list of the most popular tags, with the words in different sizes depending on the popularity of the tags.
The Search feature has been expanded to include a tag search. When you click on Tag Search in the drop-down menu, you're taken to a page with a search box; this page also contains the tag cloud. For good measure, the tag cloud also appears at the bottom of the Advanced Search page.

Sweden will only be represented by the King and Queen, and where the Prince of Wales made a huge splash in headlines by announcing that he was not going to the games, his little sister will be representing Britain as a member of the IOC.
Prince Albert II of Monaco is a member of the IOC and will likely attend the games. Princess Haya bint Hussein will be at the games, likely cheering for the record-sized UAE squad.
In tune with the ancient tradition, the chief of state is the one responsible for the opening of the games at the big and beautiful Opening Ceremonies that are held to get the games started.
Thus, when the games are held in a country who has a royal family, the chief of the family is incumbent of such task. Over the years, these were the royals responsible for opening the Summer Olympic Games:
1896 - Athens, Greece - King George I of Greece
1908 - London, UK - King Edward VII
1912 - Stockholm, Sweden - King Gustav V of Sweden
1920 - Antwerp, Belgium - King Albert I of the Belgians
1928 - Amsterdam, the Netherlands - Prince Hendrik
1948 - London, UK - King George VI
1956 - Melbourne, Australia - Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden with Queen Elizabeth II (the equestrian events could not be held in Australia due to unforseen circumstances. Therefore, those events were held five months earlier in Stockholm, Sweden)
1964 - Tokyo, Japan - HIM Emperor Showa
1976 - Montreal, Canada - Queen Elizabeth II
1992 - Barcelona, Spain - King Juan Carlos I
The next Summer Olympic Games will be held in London in 2010 and, after almost 20 years, it'll be time for a royal chief of state to officially open the games.
* Crown Prince Harald was the Norwegian flagbearer at the Olympics in Tokyo in 1964.
* Crown Prince Constantine carried the flag for the Greek delegation in Rome in 1960.
* Infanta Cristina was the Spanish flagbearer at the Olympics in Seoul in 1988.
* Prince Felipe was the Spanish flagbearer at the Olympics in Barcelona in 1992.
* Princess Haya represented Jordan at the games in Sydney in 2000, and carried the flag for the delegation.
* Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum has been reported to be carrying the flag for the UAE in Beijing.
Royals who have won a medal at the Olympics include:
* Crown Prince Olav of Norway, who won a gold medal in Amsterdam in 1928.
* Crown Prince Constantine of Greece, who won a gold medal in Rome in 1960.
* Shaikh Ahmad Mohammad Hasher Al Maktoum, who won a gold in shooting in Athens, 2004.
The Olympic games have also been the stage for the start of some royal relationships.
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden met Silvia Sommerlath at the 1972 Munich Olympic games. She was working as a translator and their relationship quickly blossomed. Almost four years later, on March 12th, 1976 they announced their engagement and were married three months later, on June 19th at Stockholm Cathedral. Silvia Sommerlath became Queen Silvia of Sweden and the couple has three children.
In 1996, at the Atlanta Olympic games, Infanta Cristina of Spain met the one who'd become her husband: Iñaki Urdangarín y Liebaert. Cristina, after taking part in the 1988 Seoul games as an athlete, had gone as an spectator and Iñaki was one of the stars of the Spanish Handball squad (that won the bronze medal). A little over a year later, on May 3rd, 1997 they became engaged, five months later, on October 4th they got married at Barcelona Basilica. Upon marriage, the couple became the Duke and Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, they have four children.
Four years after Cristina and Iñaki, during the 2000 Sydney Olympic games, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark went out one evening with some friends and met the woman that was meant to become his wife: Sydney real estate agent Mary Elizabeth Donaldson. After three years of relationship, with a period being long distance, before Mary moved up to Denmark, they became engaged in October 2003 and were married on May 14th the next year, in a big ceremony at Copenhagen Cathedral. Mary became Crown Princess Mary Elizabeth of Denmark and the couple has two children.
There were several royals that took part in the Olympic games as athletes through the years:
Amsterdam 1928: Crown Prince Olav of Norway took part in the sailing competitions (6m mixed). The Crown Prince and his crew won the gold medal.
Rome 1960: Princess Sophia of Greece, now Queen Sofia of Spain, was in the reserve crew in one of the sailing competitions.
Tokyo 1964: Crown Prince Harald of Norway, son of King Olav, took part in the sailing competitions. The Crown Prince was the Norwegian flag bearer at the games.
Munich 1972: King Juan Carlos of Spain took part in the dragon class of the sailing competitions.
Montreal 1976: Anne, The Princess Royal, took part in the games as a member of the British eventing team. She's the only member of the British royal family to have ever taken part in the games to date.
Seoul 1988: Infanta Cristina of Spain took part in the Spanish sailing team. She was the flag bearer for her country that year.
Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992: Albert II, The Sovereign Prince of Monaco was a as a bobsleigh driver for the Monegasque squad.
Barcelona 1992: Felipe, Prince of Asturias, took part in the soling class of the sailing competitions. He was the flag bearer for Spain that year.
Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000: Iñaki Urdangarin, Duke of Palma de Mallorca took part in three Olympic Games as a member of the Spanish handball squad. At Atlanta and Sydney the team won bronze medals.
Sydney 2000: Princess Haya of Jordan took part as a member of the Jordanian eventing squad. She was also the flag bearer of her country.
