Royals At Famous Hotels

I am in search for stories about Royals at famous hotels, such as the King of Spain in exile at the Grand Hotel in Rome, Edward, Prince of Wales, visiting the Hotel Bristol in Vienna, etc. I would share these stories with the hotels involved.
Thank you

The Baron Hotel, Aleppo, Syria

Founded in 1911 by the family Mazloumian (origins: Armenian) with 33 rooms. It turned out immediatly as romping place for cosmopolitans from all kind of countries, in particular British citizens, Germans and Austrians, who rattled about as archeologists as well as spies in this strategically important part of the world.

During the turbulent war years - being Armenian the Mazloumians had to live in exile - their hotel served for a certain period of time as headquater to Mustafa Kemal Pascha, the later Kemal Atatürk (the one who defeated the British legions in Gallipoli BTW and thereby forced Winston Churchill to resign).

After WWI the hotel Baron returned to its former prestigious clientele; among others: Charles Lindbergh, David Rockefeller and Theodor Roosevelt, the later King of Irak Feisal, who was in 1919 for a short period of time King of Syria, and Charles de Gaulle.

Early 1930s the Swedish Royal family stayed in the Baron. On their way to India they had to stop in Aleppo because of an case of illness for three weeks.

The downturn of the Baron started in the 1950s unfortunatly because of the political situation.:bang:

Queen Victoria used to take over an entire hotel for her trips to the south of France. I'll have to find out which one and get back to you.

"Even Queen Victoria liked to slip away to the French Riviera from time to time, calling herself the Countess of Lancester. Her favourite haunt was the Excelsior-Regina Hotel, perched high on the cliffs above Nice, which she took over in its entirety for the duration for her stay, bringing her own best-loved pieces of furniture with her as well as a quantity of servants and Royal Household staff." :flowers:

some of the hotels that william and kate have chosen:

william and kate have privileged the shangri-la hotels during their tour to south asia, like the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Beach Resort in Kota Kinabalu. they also stayed in the raffles hotel in singapore.
during their honeymoon, they stayed at the Desroches Island Resort, in north island, at the seychelles.
their first year anniversary on the other hand was at the very low key Westleton Crown's swan room.
kate and her family chose the goring hotel for the night before the royal wedding.
the queen chose the mandarin hotel in london for the royal wedding reception to foreign dignataries.

King George and Queen Elizabeth were at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto in 1939, which is where my dad goes annually to a Marine dinner the third Friday night in January. In 1996 he bailed out the morning of the dinner (January 19th that year), because my mom was in labour two and a half months prematurely with my youngest brother, who was born the next afternoon at 2:52 (though the birth announcement says 2:42) by C-section, weighing 3 lbs. 9 oz. Every January 20th we tell him that story, and he never gets tired of it! This birthday he will be 17.

Didn't an emperor and empress of Japan stay at the hauntingly famous Stanley hotel in Estes park, Colorado. There is also a ghost of a princess there I just don't know who.

kristens 10-22-2012 04:04 PM

Indeed, the Queen stayed at the Williamsburg Inn during her visit in 2007. We were there about a month afterwards and one of the staff told us about the "walkabout" she did with the staff in the lobby.
There's a wonderful photo of her in front of the Waldorf=Astoria in NY during the 1950s and the book "Castles of the North" documents visits to Canadian hotels

Currently showing on BBC is a documentary series called 'Inside Claridges'. In Episode One you see the hotel preparing for a party of Middle Eastern Royal women who take over the entire third floor. In a later episode the Emperor of Japan stays there.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal and his wife Princess Ameera bint Aidan bin Nayef Al Taweel were seen in a documentary about the Savoy Hotel which he owns/owned.

^^^In the Claridge's documentary you mentioned, it also said that Queen Sofia stayed in the royal suite. Also, the BRF frequently stay (and have lunches/dinners/parties) at the Goring Hotel, in London.

i saw this article in a spanish newspaper on the chain "paradores" which are hotels belonging to a public society in historic houses and properties. they speak in the article about the royal connections of several of the properties and also about several royal guests who stayed in them, amongst which:

- the king and queen of spain stayed at the parador in Carmona
- the prince of asturias stayed at Parador de Pontevedra, when at the navy
- "the monegasque princes" (I assume albert and charlene) visited the Parador de Granada
- charles and diana visited toledo and stayed in a parador (they don't specify which one exactly)
- the queen of the belgians (i assume fabiola) stayed at the parador of Santiago de Compostela.

hola claims that william and kate stayed for holiday at Hotel du Palais, in Biarritz, france for their summer holidays. the hotel is a beautiful 5 stars. we don't know what room they chose, but it is quite possible that they were hosted at one of the royal suites.
the hotel has royal connections too: Napoleon II and Eugenie de Montijo vacationed there. it has beautiful french period furniture in their rooms.

the hotel choice is odd, considering the hotel is right in town, but hola usually seems to have good information.

definitely, although the name of the hotel (and the destination) of their honeymoon was publicized shortly after (or even during) their honeymoon, shortly after they left the hotel, i believe. their honeymoon seemed to be a tour of many destinations in a row so as soon as they left one, the press seemed to find out about them. not sure how many of them are actually genuine destinations they visited. the list seemed way too long for the period they took for their honeymoon (approximately 1 month, with visits in spain at the start, a break in jordan to attend the wedding of the heir (plus some private visits to petra), plus a private part of the honeymoon visiting many exotic destinations like thailand, fiji and india).

anyway, they clearly liked it as they came back with the girls after. i assume they must favour this sort of secluded destinations to get some privacy.

indeed, after looking it up it seems that the list of honeymoon destinations for felipe and letizia is anything but short:

'The rumor has led them, in a first stage, to Oman and, simultaneously, to Mexico. It is not likely, however, that they visit the Aztec country. Yes they have collected testimonies of their departure to Thailand, where, apparently, they enjoyed the wonders of the island paradise of Koh Muk. The couple, supposedly, stayed at Thumarin Thana Hotel, situated in the city of Trang. India would have been another place on the itinerary, from where they would set out for China. Precisely in that flight was where, apparently, a little discreet commander did the most unsuspected task when he welcomed from the public address to the illustrious passengers.'

it seems like a very long list of destinations but the press reporting it are fairly official and serious press. this book also includes an account of their honey moon, which just includes oman, china, thailand, india and fiji. it mentions they did travel in mexico, but that was in july after they had been to the country on official business. they were lent the presidential plane to visit monterrey, visited basilica de guadalupe and even stayed in the presidential residence.

https://books.google.com/books?id=mi...0india&f=false

some other outlets even mention hawaii:

Descubra el paraíso donde los Príncipes de Asturias pasaron su verdadera luna de miel

it is interesting as the Thumarin Thana Hotel is a small hotel, unlike the wakaya. there's not many hotels in the area so i guess they took the best one they could find. i wonder what exactly appealed to them about the area, which isn't amongst the most touristy:

Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg and her husband were invited to a Hunt in Belgium.
On their way back to Luxembourg the weather was that bad that they decided to stop and going for the nght in a Hotel in the Ardennes.
They had a small car and wore dirty shoes. They were refused for the night.
They went to another hotel just at the other side of the Road and asked to bring to the former Hotel their Card : Leurs Altesses Royales La grande Duchesse et le Prince de luxemborg.!

A cousin - who travels independently a lot - told me how she rolled into the Taj Mahal Palace very late at night a few years ago and just jumped back into her crumpled clothes to go down to breakfast the next morning.

No combing the hair, no shower etc - just to get a feed before starting the day after a long trip to get there a few hours before.

She shared the elevator ride down with an immaculately dressed lady - outfit, hair, make-up, jewelry, the works - also on her way to eat.

Princess Michael of Kent and her entourage!
