I must say that I like the Countess of Wessex's outfit. Her hat is a tad questionable, but I think it is more than appropriate for Ascot and I think she looks chic. I also think the Duchess of Cornwall looks superb.

I must say that Camilla looked absolutely elegant!! She was in my opinion the best dressed royal woman. The color of the suit is lovely and the suit is well tailored and stylish especially the skirt. Not to mention topping it off with that fantastic Philip Treacy hat.

As for Sophie's outfit, I think only the Empress of Japan could wear such a hat and get away with. The outfit simply had too many things going on with it from the jacket (which isn't bad by itself) to the skirt.

15 June 2005 - COUNTESS LOOKS SATELLITE DISHY - Wessex wows Ascot fans. By Paul Byrne
THE Countess of Wessex looked a picture yesterday in an Ascot hat that resembled a satellite dish. Her grey tweed outfit was flecked with black and white and she had a white Yorkshire rose on her hat to mark the meeting's move to York.

It is being held there for the first time in 294 years because of a £185million refurbishment at the Berkshire course.

According to the Royal Ascot website, Ladies' day is the colloquial name for the day the Gold Cup race is run, because it's the most popular day of the meeting and so attracts more female visitors.

One of the highlights of the racing and social calendars, Royal Ascot was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne and royal patronage continues to the present day with a Royal Procession taking place in front of the grandstands each day. I was reading the hat rules for the Royal enclosure and I don't think that Sophie's hat passed the bill.

However the hat looks 'better' from this side, and I have seen almost seven people wearing similiar hats at Ascot, so yes the saucer shaped head thing has made a revival.

Did Camilla ever attend ascot before marrying Charles. I loved her hat at the most recent Ascot but I have always wondered if she attended with Andrew or on her own in the olden days.

Elspeth 01-11-2006 06:18 PM

I think she did, because wasn't there some instance where she and her husband were invited to the Royal Enclosure, and people were saying that it was the Queen's way of showing support for Charles and sending a message to Diana or something?

The June 1985 Ascot was when Andrew and Sarah first noticed a spark. She also attended in June 1986 before the wedding. Remember she wore that color-blocked dress of white, green, and black or navy which was not one of her better fashion choices.

I don't think the Duchess of Cornwall attended today. She hasn't been mentioned and she wasn't in the carriage with Prince Charles (he was sitting beside Prince Andrew)

As for Sophie and her strange hats, Ascot usually brings out the most bizzare headwear, she is probably on the tame side.

qui mal y pense 06-21-2006 03:16 PM

I loved Sophie's hat the first day, but what was that pink ribbon on the Queen's hat? It looked like it just fell there?
and most importantly IS THAT A NEW HAT ANNE IS WEARING? That should be frontpage news.

I think those plate-on-side-or-front-of-head arrangements are strange too, but I think Sophie's looks good. She's successfully managed to combine the plate look with exploding bird look in the one hat, and she's wearing the perfect dress for it.

The Queens outfits have been wonderful this week but both sophie and camilia looked awful. camilia's hat was far too wide and too many feathers also the gold colour was too young for her at nearly 60. sophie was badly dressed as ever especially her hats which looked stupid and oversized (particularly the pink one)

Should Camilla only wear dark colours because of her "age"? IMO gold suits her very well, the cut was perfect. And she is a fan of big hats, that´s her special mark.
