Did Meghan also befriend non-famous people in the last few years? As even if the invited are friends, the fact that so many are part of the rich and famous in itself is telling.

She has decades long friendships with non famous people. But I guess that doesn't count in this narrative.

Indeed, that's why I stressed her recent friendships. It seems that her non-famous friends are from a long time ago but the more recent ones fall in a very specific category so that tells us something about how her life, social circle and priorities changed over the years.

Do you think the media will report the not rich and famous? I mean NO ONE knew about Genevieve and they’ve been friends longer than Meghan has known any of the Toronto high society. And really, that’s about our source for anyone that’s not sitting in the Quire. As for her friends in the last few years, she made friends like how the rest of us make friends, either through work or other friends. But her friends from the social scene are all hard working people that have found success, and not your simple rich and posh group who lives off of their family fortune type.

How would anyone know, if she made non famous friends the recent years? They'd be just that, non famous, and wouldn't get attention. There's really no winning for her in this one. She gets called out for having famous friends, because people recognize these people, but then she gets dragged for not having non famous friends, because no one is talking about these friendships, because, well, they'd be not known by people.

Some of her long term friends are also in the business. She has known Janina for 15 years. Lindsay is her college BFF and was a producer for Larry King. She has been friends with Abigail Spencer for almost decade (and long before Suits & Timeless). To expect her to not have industry friends and some of them recognizable is naive.

People grow as their lives change. She has maintained old friendship and gained new ones. Isn't that life? Don't we all typically do that. Why is this a negative with Meghan?

Also how would most know non famous friends? I pointed out a major friend upthread in Genevieve that NO ONE in the almost 2 years she has been in the royal bubble reported on or mentioned via the media. And why would they know her? That is the point. Many have no idea about her real personal relationships and honestly? Good.

That they all work hard and have made something of themselves?

But isn’t that true for most of us? People typically meet friends that are from work or through other friends and hobbies. So yes, your situation in life now has a lot to do with whom you come in contact with and thus have a chance of becoming friends with. But despite her change in cirsumstance, she hasn’t forgotten or left those that were there before then, and that say a lot. What I will say is that all of her friends that we know of are hard working types. So that does say a lot about them and Meghan.

Just want to add on to this and say that NO ONE reported about Genevieve until after a local paper from where she lives and works at. Even when the seating chart for the Quire was published. The only reason we ended up finding out is because her family owns a good sized business in that area, and is will known amount the business publications.

Anyone ever stop to think that perhaps the "recent" close friendships may have been both Harry and Meghan's? The people that perhaps aided and abetted the couple courting under the radar all that time? :D

How about charity representatives? How about Manchester bombing victims?

NONE of whom were in the Quire..

Looks to me as though the most prominent African American imaginable was invited, purely because she 'is who she is', rather than any actual friendship with bride or groom..

My point on those were based on the fact that had the other Windsors been invited, none of them would be seated where Oprah or the Clooney’s were seated. Instead they’d be more likely in the Nave. As for Oprah, we are all making certain assumptions as to why because neither party is talking about the relationship.

I do not get why there's so much upset about the guest list. To me it seems like some wanted Meghan to scrap her co-workers and friends from her own wedding, just so the royal line up would've been full enough.

Lol, some of you proclaim to know the personal relationships of famous people who you don't know. Ridiculous.

Meghan would not have had to scrap anyone; the chapel seats 800.

That’s true. Meghan still could’ve had her celebrity wedding and there was lots of room for cousins.

Of course it is important for a royal family to be valued by their own people but the importance of a royal family in international relations shouldn't be underestimated, so the wedding receiving a lot of attention worldwide is certainly advantageous.

Yes.. why not invite THE most prominent African American to the wedding. and increase that attention, in newly interested America ?

I don't think her presence was known in advance so no tv station decided to come to Windsor because of Oprah Winfrey and I doubt the wedding was discussed more often because of her.

The nice weather (which they couldn't control) helped far more to share a positive vibe around this royal wedding.

I’m sure Meghan and Harry have tons of friends and acquaintances most people wouldn’t know if they ran over them in a Royal Landau. Think of all the prominent people you know of: can you honestly say you know who all their friends are?

I'm not sure I would consider Oprah the most prominent AA in the U.S. ...she doesn't even do her Oprah show anymore. She's more behind the scenes now days or so it seems to me. I rarely hear about her.

Speaking as an American, our interest in this wedding had zero to do with Oprah and everything to do with Meghan being 1. American and 2. African-American.

People didn't even know Oprah was attending. Just watch any of the coverage and her arrival was a shock to them all. "Was that Oprah?!" So implication that her presence was the reason American media was there is a reach.

This wedding already proved that. Most people couldn't name a good portion of those in the Quire because they weren't famous. The fact most the people in there were Meghan's close girlfriend and the media just discovered them proved she doing something right.

I’m not going to beat the dead Oprah horse anymore because I think we’ve all made up our minds on that. I do want to point out the far more disturbing concept of blaming the woman here.

Oprah or no Oprah, the Windsor cousins or whoever else that people thinks should be invited to the wedding would not have been on Meghan’s list. Most weddings I’ve seen has a list of mutual friends, his guests, her guests, and parents often get some slots too. In this case, we know Charles did as well given that he had friends there as well. Her Majesty’s cousin were invited as well, so I’m assuming that came from her. However, it is somehow MEGHAN’s priorities and shows what kind of wedding SHE wanted that’s being criticized or talked about in a negative way here. It’s somehow upsetting that she put someone on her side of Quire after already giving up some seats to Harry to accommodate his large family. I could understand if people question why Oprah was seated in the Quire, but not her Suits castmate, but it’s quite unfair to hold her responsible or talk about her in a negative way because Harry’s second and third cousins whom he sees maybe two or three times a year at major events aren’t invited.

The reality is, Harry’s side of family is up to him and, to an extent, his close family to decide. None of them thought it was importantly enough to invited his second or third cousins, why is this reflective of Meghan? Did I miss the reporting that she took the Windsor second or third cousins off the list when Harry and Charles or the Queen put them on? And make no mistake that the list is ultimately approved by HMQ and Charles given that HMQ did consult the government on the issue related to foreign dignitaries.

From day one we were told this was Meghan and Harry’s ‘private’ wedding. They did things their way to paraphrase the old song.

The statement from Harry and Meghan said because it’s a smaller venue (although they still had room for 200 more people) and because Harry is 6th in line to the throne there was no need for an official guest list.

If Harry’s cousins weren’t there, that’s because the couple didn’t want them there. Nothing to do with the Queen. The Queen invites everyone to Trooping the Colour and the Christmas lunch at BP.

I doubt she was against Harry inviting his cousins. They were all invited to the wedding in 2011

Agreed. There are too many unknowns behind the scenes to draw any conclusions about the closeness of certain family members, the European royals that “should” have been invited despite the fact that the groom is now sixth in line to the throne and probably doesn’t have many close working relationships with any of these folks. There were 600 people at the wedding. Other than Meghan’s cast mates, I count fewer than 20 guests whom one might reasonably call “celebrities.” We don’t know whether Harry is friends with any of these folks, whether the couple met them through friends of friends, or whatever. There is no basis for the conclusion that famous people were invited because the bride is a shameless social climber, a careerist or whatever. She is no longer an actor, so there’s no reason to cultivate the Clooneys, Idris Elba and fiancée, nor any other movie star for that matter.

I do not understand the insistence that Meghan wanted a “Hollywood” wedding when she had the most career success in Toronto! I mean, come on!

No one said The Queen wouldn’t let them invite the distant relatives. But the Queen obviously had no objections to them not being invited. Bottom line is Harry isn’t close to them. If Harry wanted to invite them, he would’ve regardless of Oprah’s invitation. And my issue continues to be why remarks were thrown in Meghan’s way for them not being invited just because she invited who she wanted to on her side.

In any wedding this is how it is. There were 800 guests in the chapel. So technically 400 guests for her, and 400 guests for him. I doubt that Meghan had 400 guest present there overall, so this means that Harry had more than 400 opportunities to invite anybody of his choice, be it, foreign royals or extended family. He didn't. Why should it be her responsibilities and why should her guests be it those , in the navel or in the quire, celebrities or otherwise be scrutinized like that.
