I would definitely add Infanta Elena to Jaime de Marichalar in March 1995 -- 4 months before Pavlos to Marie Chantal -- as being a very important and major wedding. It was the first royal wedding to take place in at least 100 years in Spain.

1990's

Prince Maurits to Marilene van den Broek

2000's

Prince Bernhard jr. to Annette Sekreve

The '50's : (now king) Albert of Belgium and Paola Ruffo di Calabria

I don´t think that all these weddings are major events. They may had a lot of attention in their countries but really big I would say are only the Crown Princes weddings.????

But one more of the "less attention" weddings:

2002: Märtha Louise and Ari Behn

1953 Luxembourg Jean & Joséfine-Charlotte
1956 Monaco Rainier & Grace Kelly
1959 Belgium Albert & Paola

I think things are a bit confused. The original post asked for major weddings throughout the decades as you point out, liv. But then the post also included as examples weddings that I would say fit your criteria of getting a lot of attention in their own countries but would not count as major weddings, such as Laurent and Claire's wedding -- the equivalent of Martha Louise and Ari's wedding in Norway.

I would say the major weddings in most countries are those of the future heads of state:

Baudoin and Fabiola
Albert and Paola
Phillippe and Mathilde

Jean and Josephine Charlotte
Henri and Maria Teresa

Frederik and Ingrid
Margrethe and Henrik
Frederik and Mary

Paul and Frederika
Constantine and Anne Marie
Pavlos and Marie Chantal

Juan Carlos and Sofia
Felipe and Letizia

Juliana and Bernhard
Beatrix and Claus
Willem and Maxima

Ranier and Grace

Harald and Sonja
Haakon and Mette-Marit

Elizabeth and Phillip
Charles and Diana

Hussein and each of his wives
Abdullah and Rania
Hamzah and Noor

And for various other reasons, weddings that would otherwise be considered "lesser" events become major reasons.

* Elena and Jaime's wedding in March 1995 was the first royal wedding in Spain in 100 years. (Juan Carlos and Spain had been married in Athens.)

* Andrew and Sarah because there was such royal fever at the time, with all the Diana (and to a lesser degree) Charles madness going on at the same time.

* Edward and Sophie filled a bit of a void post-Diana, and of course much was made about how much Sophie and Diana resembled each other.

* Maximillian and Angela because she was someone of colour.

* Joachim and Alexandra because she was the first woman of Asian descent to be married into a European ruling royal family.

* Johan and Mabel because of the lying and Johan losing his succession rights.

Yes I also said that I think the major weddings are The weddings of the Crown Princes. But then I realized that it was more like a summary of all royal weddings and there I missed Märtha´s wedding.

So I´m very sorry when I confused some posters..

You can't forget Princess Caroline of Monaco's several weddings...

She married some guy can't remember his name in the 1980s and her second marriage was to Stephano Casiraghi also in the 1980s and in i think 1995 she married Prince Ernst of Hannover

Totally agree with you... it was a major event here in Spain since she was the first daughter to marry of current king juan carlos and the last royal wedding that had taken place in spain was in 1906, when King Alfonso XIII married Victoria Eugenia de Battenberg.
