On December 18th, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko attended a charity screening of "In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World" at Nissho Hall in Minato, Tokyo. The event supports the Japanese Red Cross Society Hiroshima Prefecture. The family were seated with director Sunao Katabuchi and actress Rena Nōnen (stage name "Non").

The film is an extended cut of the hit 2016 animated film "In This Corner of the World" about a young woman in 1930s-1940s in Hiroshima and Kure.

The family is color-coordinated, so sweet! It's nice to see that Masako was able to attend, and they all look very happy and relaxed.

A nice surprise indeed. Perhaps the supportive companionship of her daughter helped the empress to attend?

I'm curious as to why Emperor Komei was included. The inclusion of all modern emperors as well as the imperial family's legendary patriarch is logical, but why include the last emperor who reigned during the shogunate (but no other historical emperors)?

I agree. Aiko's support helps Masako. Also, Masako's attendance is probably decided late so it's not on the schedule given to press.

Only Emperor Naruhito is scheduled to meet the President and First Lady of Uzbekistan on December 20 but Sankei's December 18 Their Majesties' schedule reports both Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako received a briefing from the ambassador of Uzbekistan so there's a good chance the empress may attend as well.

According to the Ceremonies and Rites related to the Accession to the Throne (Schedule) PDF : the new emperor and empress report the enthronement and Daijosai at the mausoleums of Emperor Jimmu + 4 preceding emperors (Komei, Meiji, Taisho, Showa).

If Naruhito had succeeded on the death of his father instead of abdication, he would have visited the mausoleums Emperor Jimmu + Emperors Meiji, Taisho, Showa, and Heisei.

On December 20th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako received the President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and First Lady Ziroat Mirziyoyeva of Uzbekistan at the Imperial Palace.

They hosted a luncheon, accompanied by Imperial family members, for the Presidential couple. So far, I've spotted Crown Prince Akishino, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Mako, Princess Kako, Princess Nobuko, and Princess Hisako at the luncheon.

I am curious to see whether the press coverage will evaluate the couple's performance in comparison to that of the former reigning couple on their visits to disaster areas, since the Emperor Emeritus made highly visible visits to victims of natural disasters a touchstone of his reign.

The charity "Cats" screening benefits social welfare corporation Akeno Hoshikai which subsidizes elderly facilities. Before the movie, the family met director Tom Hooper, ballet dancer-actress Francesca Hayward, and actress Wakana Aoi. [Asahi]

ETA: former Mikasa Princess Yasuko and her husband Tadateru Konoe also attended.

Thanks! It was the 40th anniversary ceremony of the National Rehabilitation Center for Disabled People and the National Occupational Rehabilitation Center. Both centers were established in 1979 to provide comprehensive services from medical care to vocational training. [Yomiuri]

Their visit to the employment support room is connected to December's Week of Persons with Disabilities. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko normally visited a facility for disabled people during the Week of Persons with Disabilities. However, December was busy for Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako so a visit was scheduled for January this time. [Sankei]

news24.jp reports the center provided 29 items such as rice, tea, and taro offerings for the Daijosai.

I'm so glad that Masako is able to do more and more of these routine engagements.

The other thing that caught my eye, which I have never noticed before, is the arrangement of the flooring, which offers a separate area for the Imperial couple, and neatly clues in the guests as to where they should stand , and how closely they may approach. It's subtle but extremely useful!

The story of Princess Aiko memorizing win-loss records when she was only around 6 years old is very cute.
