On November 10th, Emperor Naruhito's family visited the Museum of the Imperial Collections (Sannomaru Shozokan) at the Imperial Palace East Garden to view special exhibitions including "5th Year of Reiwa and Their Majesties' 30th Wedding Anniversary."

The museum is under renovation until 2026 and partially reopened on November 3.

On December 21st, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako met recipients of the 75th Health Culture Awards, commended by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, at the Imperial residence.

On November 30, 2023, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended an audience at the Imperial Palace for recipients of the Educator Award, commended by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

On December 18, 2023, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended an audience at the Imperial Palace for the National Tax Agency officials, awarded by the Minister of Finance, and local government tax officials, awarded by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications.

Emperor Naruhito will attend the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's 150th anniversary ceremony on January 15 and tour the headquarters' communications command center. About 145 people are expected at the ceremony, including Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike and National Police Agency Commissioner Yasuhiro Tsuyuki.

It will be His Majesty's 2nd visit. Then known as Prince Hiro, he visited the police department and toured the communications command center in 1986.

Empress Masako will join if there are no health problems.

On January 15th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's 150th anniversary ceremony and toured the communications command center at the department's headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo. Afterwards, Their Majesties learned about the local situation from special rescue personnel dispatched to Ishikawa Prefecture, and received an explanation about the activities of police dogs from the head of the forensics division.

Emperor Naruhito expressed condolences to victims of the Noto Peninsula earthquake at the ceremony. This was his first public statement regarding the disaster.

According to Sankei and NTV, replicas were made after Emperor Meiji ordered the restoration of Shosoin treasures and the practice continues to maintain and improve repair and craft techniques.

:previous: Given the cautious pace of resuming large or indoor events, I don't expect the Imperial Household Agency to host a state visit until the fall or maybe 2025. State visit banquet does not guarantee tiaras such as kimono or black tie dress code.

On February 6th, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko attended a 2 hour briefing on the Noto Peninsula earthquake at the Imperial residence. Takashi Mori, Director-General of the Japan Meteorological Agency, and Kenji Takahashi, Director-General for Policy Planning (Disaster Prevention) of the Cabinet Office explained the damage situation and government's response. Princess Aiko, who will start working for the Japan Red Cross Society in April, asked questions about volunteer activities.

On February 13th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako met people with disabilities and independence supporters, commended by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, at the Imperial Palace.

About 50 recipients attended, including spouses, massage therapists, acupuncturists and social welfare corporation employees. This year, 54 people and 1 organization received awards. [Mainichi]

On February 16th, Emperor Naruhito's family visited the 98th Kokufu Bonsai Exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Taito, Tokyo. The highest award winner was a bonsai estimated to be 400 years old.

While this is the family’s first visit together, it is Naruhito's 6th time and Masako's first time in 18 years since 2006. The Imperial Household Agency is also participating as a special exhibitor.

On March 8th, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko attended a briefing from the Japanese Red Cross Society at the Imperial residence. JRCS staff explained relief efforts and volunteer work in areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake. After JRCS President Atsushi Seike gave a general explanation, the family heard from a doctor who worked in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture and a nurse who worked in Wajima City.

Arrangements are underway for Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako to visit the disaster area in late March.

On March 15th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attended 2 audiences at the Imperial Palace.

Around 3pm, they met 18 recipients of the 52nd Medical Achievement Award.

After 4pm, Their Majesties met 14 people including winners of the Emperor's Cup at the 2023 / 62nd Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries Festival. The couple viewed displays and products.

On March 22nd, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited Wajima and Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture. The cities were hit hard from the January 1 Noto earthquake. The couple flew from Haneda Airport to Noto Airport, arriving just before 11am.

  • tour Asaichi Street, where a large-scale fire broke out, meet victims & relief workers at evacuation center

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will visit Anamizu and Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture on April 12 to inspect earthquake damage and evacuation centers. They will use Self-Defense Forces helicopters and microbuses after arrival at Noto Airport. The visit maybe postponed to April 13 due to weather conditions.

Additional info on April 12 visit to Ishikawa Prefecture. The original plane at Haneda Airport was delayed over an hour due to engine trouble and Their Majesties transferred to the backup plane. Lunch and rest periods during transit were shortened in order to complete the visit’s agenda. [TBS]

Anamizu Town:
  • toured heavily damaged shopping district
  • met victims and responders at Sawayaka Koryukan Pluto, civic center serving as evacuation facility
  • port to learn of clean up and pay respects towards Yuigaoka district where a landslide killed 16 people
Noto Town:
  • met victims at junior high school serving as evacuation center
  • toured heavily damaged Shiromaru district

In the evening of April 19th, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako met Senior Overseas Cooperation Volunteers and Japanese Community Senior Overseas Cooperation Volunteers at the Imperial residence. The volunteers were dispatched as midwives, pharmacists, elementary school teachers, music and kendo instructors to developing countries such as Laos, Micronesia, Jamaica and Argentina. The meeting lasted about 75 minutes.
