My god, why can't he keep his mouth shut??

Prince Victor Emmanuel, the son of Italy's last king, has been taped boasting that he got away with a not guilty verdict after shooting a man in 1978. Prosecutors told a judge in Potenza that the 69-year-old prince was secretly recorded in a prison cell this year after he was arrested on charges of bribery and pimping. He allegedly told his companions how he had shot 19-year-old Dirk Hamer in Corsica but escaped justice.
"I tricked them [the judges]," he said. "I was sure of winning, more than sure," the prince said, according to the newspaper La Stampa....

Also corriere.it has described yesterday the same story.
According to corriere.it he not only was boasting in another prisoner's presence to have tricked french judges but after have been realesed from jail he knew that his telephone conversations were eavesdropped on. During one of phone conversation he described people who were eavesdropping him as " people who want be famous, without money, who pass their life doing this and in the meantime their wife is unfaithful to them".

Repubblica.it presented the testimony of Mr Niki Pende, a doctor who was attacked by prince VE in the night of 17 agust 1978 (during this night a german studet received letal injury from prince VE and died after 111 days of agony). In Mr Pende's opinion the process during which VE was acquitted was " buyed" and it was " a shame". According to Mr Pende had "killed twice" Dirk Hamer- firstly when he shot at him and secondly when prince VE didn't use his means to save Hamer's life and he could have done it". Hamer wasn't transported to a modern hospital with good equipment be he was treated by a local 80- years old doctor who only had sutured his wounds instead of doing a by-pass.

It was an open secret. In Italy we would call it a "Pulcinella's ( a Neapolitan mask) secret. Anyway the people in the street here don't seem to care a bit about him.

Just when I thought my opinion of Victor Emanulle could not get any lower, I just read these articles about that incident we discussed here many weeks ago:

Italian royal taped boasting he got away with murder
Desmond O'Grady in Rome
September 12, 2006
...Victor Emanuel has opened his mouth and put his royal foot in it once again. The 69-year-old son of Italy's last king was put under house arrest after spending a week in jail in late June. Investigators say he was involved in procuring prostitutes for clients of a casino near the Swiss border....In his ruling, the magistrate said Victor Emmanuel had been recorded in his cell telling another inmate how he beat the rap for the killing of a 19-year-old German, Dirk Hamer, off Corsica, saying: "I put it over the French judge - I had scores of important people testifying."
He kept blabbing under house arrest. On his home phone, he described the magistrates investigating him as "penniless, envious turds whose wives are probably cuckolding them while they keep track of me".

Of the articles listed above, the most repugnant thing is the idea of him being satisfied with getting away with a crime years ago, where another person lost his life. And still, he remembers it well enough to be bragging about now and to a cell mate. As far as I know, in the USA, if you are aquited of a crime and later found admitting guilt, you can't be prosecuted again. I'm not sure about the current legalities in Italy or France to see if his admission would force a new trial on that other incident.

There won't be a new trial in France as one can't be prosecuted for a crime he's admitted to have comitted if he had been previously acquited.

VE never denied he shot the unfortunate German; he claimed he did not intend to kill him. The court accepted that defence, and he got off.
The boasting to a fellow inmate was about his acquittal, rather than an admission of murder.

What is much surprising is that the court accepted it. According to the french law, killing someone even when you didn't intend to kill him is a crime punished by the law (differently if you wanted to injured him or if you hadn't any intention to make him injured or killed).

I'm sorry to contradict your statement, Warren, but according to what VE told the Italian press, he always denied he shot the German guy. Here's what he told an Italian journalist in a recent interview (reported by "dagospia") ĞDille del peso del proiettile. Spiega che non poteva essere il mioğ. Lei traduce dal francese e aggiunge: ĞNon è stata la sua pallottola a uccidere Hamer. Infatti è stato prosciolto per non aver commesso il fattoğ

(Turning to his wife) "Tell her (the reporter) about the weight of the bullet. Make it clear that it couldn't be mine". She translates from French into Italian and adds: "It wasn't his bullet that killed Hamer ( the German guy). In fact he's been acquited. He's not guilty".

However he cannot be prosecuted in Italy for a crime he had committed on the French territory.

It's crimes like these and people like him that make me wish double jeopardy was legal. Completely unremorseful for taking someone else's life and bragging about it to boot! He's a borderline sociopath.

As a result of this statement of his, His sister Maria Gabriella urged his wife Marina to impose judicial interdicion on him, since he's been bringing dishonour on their century-old family.

Savoy Prince in fresh row: Vittorio Emanuele admits guilt in German youth's 1978 death
(ANSA) - Rome, September 12
from the above link, a quote on the reaction of the victim's family:

...Meanwhile, the sister of Dirk Hamer told an Italian newspaper on Tuesday that the prince's comments had given her fresh hope in her fight for justice .
Birgit Hamer, 49, told La Repubblica that "the truth has emerged from the mouth of the very man who throughout all these years has tried to hide and deny it. At this point, it doesn't matter what his lawyers say" .
"I don't want revenge - just justice," said Hamer, a former Miss Germany who was invited by Italian friends on the 1978 boat trip and had asked her brother to go with her .
"My lawyer has told me there cannot be another trial but I hope one will now be held in Italy," she said .
She said Vittorio Emanuele, an international jetsetter with influential friends, had pulled strings at his Paris trial, citing former French presidents Valery Giscard d'Estaing and the late Francois Mitterand. "Lots of very powerful people were protecting him. That's why he was so sure of being acquitted," said Hamer, who has written a book about her brother's death entitled Crime Without Punishment .

Pardon my ignorance/lack of knowledge but what will that do?

Here's the link to the satirical TV news progamme "Striscia la notizia" aired by canale 5 (Berlusconi's network) last night, showing Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia (the "reporter" called Signor di Savoia) being awarded with a second "golden tapir". This prize was delivered to him for the infamous unlucky events VE was involved in.
To those who do not understand Italian, in a gist I can say he denied he'd ever gone to the Casino of Campione. he pretended he ignored this place exists. Besides he said that the tapes had been manipulated.
