In that case, you are right on that one. I think 'diplomatic' is a word not listed in princess Gabriella's dictionary
When she was in my country, Spain, she made Franco furious for her outspokeness (as in she can't keep her mouth shut) and her fling with Juan Carlos and then with one of Franco's nephews. Then there was the whole thing on the Shah of Iran wanting to make her his Empress and even the Vatican interfered to prevent it. So, she is quite a spitfire all on her own. Still, in this recent problem she did well to side with her sisters and the Aosta group.

Thanks for all that information about Gabriella, Toledo :). She sounds like she is quite the character. And I agree with you that she is on the right side in this dispute.

Vittorio Emmanuele, as hoped, has been released from house arrest and while he has been told not to leave Italy he may move freely about the country now. The full story is here:

According to news programme TG5 Prince Vittorio Emanuele left for Sabaudia on holiday/vacation. More info (in English) on this city can be found at:

This city was named after the Savoia Family.

Just read on dagospia that, according to GENTE, an Italian weekly magazine appearing tomorrow, Vittorio Emanuele will abdicate the (virtual) throne in favour of his son Emanuele Filiberto. The news of VE's abdication was to remain a secret for some weeks, and still according to the mag, has taken the members of the Savoia family by surprise and embarassment.

What throne is he renouncing again?
Anyway, is good to see the father making a social sacrifice for the good of his son but I don't know how this is going to help now that their Aosta cousins have been openly declared the carriers of the Savoy family legacy.
:p I can even create a brand new Seinfeld styled word to describe it's titular ambiguity, the Aostas have now the Official Pretendership over Emanuel Filiberto. Please don't smack me to death with english dictionaries

Actually, Amedeo has not been openly declared to be carrying the Savoy legacy. Rather he attempted to seize that for himself in a pathetic display that has no bearing on reality. VE was still the legitimate Head of the House of Savoy and is now succeeded by his rightful heir (acknowledged as such by the late King Umberto II) Emmanuele Filiberto.
It isn't English dictionaries that you need to be beaten with. Instead it is Latin ones since you clearly do not understand the root of the word "pretender".

:p I'll keep that in mind if I see a mob in Roman togas carrying heavy dictionaries!
I just noticed that when I said:

sounds like some kind of disease.

Here is an article from the Times about Emmanuele Filiberto poised to become the Head of the House of Savoy. No mention of the Aosta's at all. So much for them being openly declared the head, or carriers, or inheritors of anything. They aren't.

Emmanuel Filiberto to succeed?
With charges pending against Prince Victor Emmanuel the Italian royal house is facing increasing pressures to make changes.

Vittorio Emanuele talks to the media
Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia has given two "exclusive" interviews, one to "Chi" magazine, the other to tv news "Studio Aperto" aired on Italia1 (Mediaset). To watch the short interview, click below and follow the link to the interview.
http://www.studioaperto.mediaset.it/...iservizi.shtml
In short, in both interviews VE has stated that he won't abdicate mainly for two reasons: 1) there is no throne, therefore abdicating would be impossible; 2) his son Emanuele Filiberto is very close to him and is doing a great job.
"We are a very small but close and united family", VE concluded.
In both cases, the question posed by the interviewer was just about the "abdication", the role of Savoia family chief was not discussed.
VE was together with wife Marina Doria and they both looked smiling and relaxed. He even played a few jokes about his stay in jail, the authorities prohibiting him to leave Italy, the allegations against him, etc.
I am very disturbed by seeing his pictures in "Chi" magazine showing him & Marina Doria with the St Peter's Basilica background. As they did before the scandal, they are still trying to project a very pious, religious, respectable image, by using the Church and Catholic religion. There is a big gap between this "pious" image and them never missing a chance to be photographed with bishops, priests and in churches, and the crude telephone transcriptions that we all read here. Apart from any moral judgment about VE's private life and uneasy legal situation, that will gradually be determined, using the religion in such a manipulative way is always very annoying to me.

And here there's the cover of "Chi" magazine with prince VE and his wife.
As Debbies wrote they were relaxed and smiling (both in short interview for television and in cover of magazine).

Interestingly, VE has chosen two gossip medias for his first public comments following the jail. No mention of those appeared on more serious and reputable newspapers and on national tv since.
