The Tribuna del Re will open to the public in the Cathedral of Turin

The restoration of the stage overlooking the Cathedral was completed, it was used by the Royal House of Savoy. It will become part of the visit itinerary of the Royal Museums: it is accessed from the Palace but the room overlooks the Duomo, and is located exactly above the chapel that houses the Shroud.

It had never been opened to the public. Only the King and his family, the Court and distinguished guests could access it. But in the coming months the Royal Tribune should become part of the itinerary of visiting the Royal Museums of Turin, even if with specific limitations. The Tribuna, in fact, is the link between the Royal Palace and the Cathedral of San Giovanni: it is accessed from the Palace but the room overlooks the Duomo, and is located exactly above the chapel where the Shroud is currently kept.

Last week the director of the Royal Museums Enrica Pagella, the president of the "Friends of Palazzo Reale" Giuseppe Fragalà, together with the architects and restorers, presented the works just completed. Together with the Tribuna, the interventions concerned the so-called "Apartment of the foreign princes", a chain of premises that occupies the North wing of the first floor of the Palazzo, the one overlooking the Gardens. With the opening of the apartment the «ring» of the first floor is completed. The set of works was carried out with the contribution of the Compagnia di San Paolo and with a specific donation from the Amici di Palazzo, which provided for the restoration of the painting "The Olympic Games" by De Mura, on the vault of the fourth bedroom of the Apartment .

The restoration of the Tribune, although more limited, is of great significance. In fact, the "walkway" that completes the Manica Nuova and covered the entire command zone up to the Po, through the Palace, Armory, Secretariat, Theater ... From that stage the Savoy witnessed the liturgical celebrations in the Cathedral below. The last occasion was the extraordinary exposition of the Shroud in 1931, for the wedding of the crown prince Umberto with Maria José. Since 1946 no visitor had entered the premises.

The Tribune will not be open to visitors, but only with guided tours, at times and in ways yet to be established. The access of visitors must in no way interfere with the normal performance of celebrations in the Cathedral, perhaps even with the installation of a protective glass window that physically and acoustically separates the environment of the Tribune from the Cathedral. It will be necessary to guarantee all the maximum safety conditions for the Shroud and for the infrastructure of the chapel that guards it under the Tribune.

The "complications" of the relationship between the Duomo, Palazzo, and the Guarini Chapel are the original elements of the story itself: when the Savoys moved the capital to Turin their first seat was the bishop's palace, adjoining the Cathedral built a few decades ago (1498). Since then, and especially with the construction of the Guarini Chapel (1693), the Palazzo's "factory" has always been closely connected with the Cathedral, until the proclamation of the Republic in 1946.

As for the restored Chapel, the visits started again from September 27th, with great interest from visitors. The completion of the restoration of the Bertola altar is now awaited. Also here the managers of the Museums are in close contact with the Diocese of Turin to define the methods of reopening the room for worship, on certain occasions and with agreed methods: in fact, the Chapel has always been a site for religious and ecclesial purposes and it must preserve this fundamental characteristic, also being today inserted in a museum itinerary.

Parco delle Alpi Marittime, the natural oasis loved by the Royal House of Savoy

CUNEO. The Maritime Alps Nature Park is among the most extensive protected areas in Italy. Numerous peaks over 3,000 meters, lakes, grasslands, small glaciers, the abundance of alpine fauna and botanical species constitute a unique environmental heritage. Twinned with the French National Park of Mercantour since 1987, it protects an area, straddling the Alps, of 100,000 hectares which, in 1993, obtained the European Diploma for the environment. The Park was born in 1995 from the union of the Park from the Argentera and the Reserve of the woods and lakes of Palanfrè, those that were once the hunting areas of the House of Savoy. In fact, the beauty of these mountains, the wealth of chamois, trout and a splendid and luxuriant vegetation struck Vittorio Emanuele II with force, when in 1855 the king of Sardinia visited the Gesso Valley and its thermal baths. His appreciation did not go unnoticed, and the mayors of the Municipalities of the upper valley, well aware of his hunting passion and the advantages that would derive from a summer presence in the area of the royal family, decided to give the king the rights to hunt and fish on much of their territory. Thus the Royal Hunting Reserve was born.

There are three valleys in the Park - the Gesso, Stura and Vermenagna valleys - and five Municipalities involved: Aisone, Entracque, Roaschia, Valdieri, Vernante. The heart of this protected area and its symbol is the crystalline massif of Argentera-Mercantour where the Maritime Alps culminate with the 3,297 meters of the Cima Sud dell'Argentera. The Maritimes are bold and severe mountains, whose rocky walls fall with great differences in height, carved by narrow and deep valleys and their slopes hide spectacular glacial cirques, over 80 lakes at the height of an unreal blue and the remains of the southernmost glaciers in the Alps .

The variety of floristic species present, counted in about two thousand species, equivalent to about a quarter of the entire Italian flora, is exceptional. Only in this area do some endemic plants grow impossible to find in the rest of the world such as the Saxifraga from the Argentera, the Viola valderia and the Primula di Allioni. The presence of fauna is also varied and rich: chamois, ibex and marmots are frequent encounters along the paths of the Park. Between the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the third millennium the wolf also made its natural return to these harsh valleys, a sort of "quality seal" of an intact and vital alpine environment.

The hiking network, which includes over 400 kilometers of signposted routes, allows you to immerse yourself in the nature of the Park along paths, mule tracks and military roads that are authentic masterpieces of naturalistic engineering. Ten cozy mountain huts and seven spartan bivouacs allow you to experience the mountains at high altitude for mountaineers and hikers. Crossed and inhabited for centuries, the Maritime Alps bear the marks of a recent history: the ancient abandoned villages that witnessed the decline of the Alpine civilization; the hunting lodges and chalets built by the kings of the House of Savoy; military roads today have become peace paths.

Bordighera: conference on "The illustrious owners of Villa Etelinda", the results and photos

The event was organized by Cav. Francesco Verrando of the National Association of Fallen and Missing in War

Yesterday, Saturday 25 May 2019, Cav. Francesco Verrando of the National Association of Fallen and Dispersed in War, in his home in Villa Etelinda on the Via Romana in Bordighera, organized a conference entitled "The illustrious owners of Villa Etelinda. From Raphaël Bischoffsheim to Margherita di Savoia passing through the Count of Strathmore ”, held by the historic Gisella Merello.

The speaker has projected numerous images that have brought down the numerous and attentive public intervened in an atmosphere of other times. Gisella Merello spoke of the wonderful home commissioned by the banker and philanthropist Bischoffsheim to the great Parisian architect Charles Garnier, as well as the sumptuous preliminary projects and the life that took place there. The hospitality of the first owner allowed Queen Margherita, who had recently become sovereign of the Kingdom of Italy, to stay on the Riviera for a month and a half together with her only son Vittorio Emanuele, at the time of only 9 years.

Her stay in Bordighera was so pleasant that she would become queen mother again. He will buy the property of Villa Etelinda from the widow of the Scottish Count Strathmore, a British nobleman who distinguished himself for his philanthropic and social works and will be remembered for being the paternal grandfather of the English queen mother Elizabeth. Along with Villa Etelinda Margherita di Savoia, he will also purchase his very extensive surrounding park, where he will build a new villa by the Milanese architect Luigi Broggi and will establish his residence there.

Was the presidential residence Castelporziano near Rome ever a royal home? I can't find much about its history. It does look like a very interesting building.

The estate was owned by the Kings of Italy though not sure about the main residence, it was transferred to the Italian Republic after the the monarchy was deposed.
