Princess Mafalda of Savoy (1902-1944) and Prince Philipp of Hesse (1896-1980)
Princess Mafalda Maria Elisabetta Anna Romana of Savoy (2 November 1902 - 27 August 1944) was the second daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and his wife Elena of Montenegro.
Mafalda married Prince Philipp of Hesse, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and grandson of German Emperor Frederick III.
She died in Buchenwald concentration camp during the night of 26–27 August 1944.
Here a beautiful photo of Princess Mafalda:

I have always thought the death of Princess Mafalda of Savoy (as well as everyone who died in the concentration camps) to be a great tragedy. I don't believe her husband ever remarried.

In her memory the town of Villanova Canavese decided to name the square adjacent to the Cemetery "Piazza Mafalda di Savoia":

In Barletta the Club of Lions named after Mafalda of Savoy.
There is a link between Princess Mafalda di Savoia and the town of Barletta: a tombstone set in the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Sterpeto testifies.
Here the article and Mafalda Von Hessen, the granddaughter of Mafalda of Savoy, speak about her grandmother:

A rose for Princess Mafalda
The Sherwood Observatory has promoted an appointment in memory for Wednesday 28 August 2019, at 17.30
No institution has thought of recalling the 75th anniversary of the martyrdom of Princess Mafalda of Savoy, who died in solitude and pain on 28 August 1944 in the Buchenwald concentration camp. Princess Mafalda was actively engaged in anti-fascist and anti-Nazi movements. It was the only one of the Savoy royal family to suffer the fierce "revenge" of the Nazis.
For this reason the Sherwood Observatory has promoted an appointment in memory for Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at 5.30 pm, at the stele in his memory on the border of the park of Villa Ada (Via Mafalda di Savoia). His biography will be remembered and some passages on the highlights of his life will be read.
