Death and funeral of Infanta Alicia - 2017

There was a funeral mass today at the funeral parlor in Madrid. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia attended.

As an infanta of Spain she could be buried in El Escorial with her husband and son, but she had decided to be buried with her family in Glashütten

How sad to hear of the Infantas passing, she would have been 100 this November and the oldest living member of the extended Spanish Royal Family.

The Infanta Alicia was King Juan Carlos aunt in law so I'd expect a large gathering of the extended Borbon Family at her funeral.

Fallece la infanta Alicia de Borbón-Parma, tía del rey Juan Carlos

Oh my gosh, wow, I'm stunned. This year has already taken a couple prominent royals, but Infanta Alicia, I'm pretty sure she wass the oldest European royal. May she rest in peace.

It has always been the case that the (equal born) spouse of an Infante was an Infanta. But the titulature system has changed in 1987: since then this honour is ad personam. The Duke of Calabria has been created an Infante de España in 1994, for himself and not for his spouse Anne d'Orléans.

The late Princess Alicia de Bourbon-Deux Siciles née Princesse de Bourbon de Parme has reached an unbelievable age. The oldest royal now is her contemporary Woizlawa-Feodora Prinzessin Reuß née Herzogin zu Mecklenburg (99 years old).

To illustrate the long life-span: this Princess Woizlawa-Feodora was a 19-years old bridesmaid at the wedding of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands which was 80 years ago...

The infanta had a record number of claims, among them the 52nd titular Queen of Navarra.

It will be interesting to see if Prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme will attend as Chef of the House. He did so for Queen Anne of Romania, born a princess of his House, also attending on behalf of his cousin, the King of the Netherlands.

It would be intersting to see how King Juan Carlos and King Felipe will act with this Bourbon and his Carlist claim.

It was not automatic. Alicia was created an Infanta by Alfonso XIII after her wedding.

If there is a public funeral and he is invited and/or attends I doubt the Kings will make anything of his absurd claim and will treat him like any other guest.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia came to pay their respects today also.

Condolences to the family

Amazing to think how much life she has witnessed. A widow of fifty three years, and the loss of her eldest son. Not surprisingly she us also the last of her siblings to pass. Seems she was the only one who had children in her family.

I was surprised she has to be buried at home in Austria and not with her husband and son.

I suspect quite a large Royal turnout. Between her husband's connections, and her own including the Luxembourg, Bulgarian, Lichtenstein, Austria-este and Romanian royals

The most recent yes. But both Alicia and Anne are Dowager Duchess of Calabria as they are both the widows of the Dukes of Calabria. Unfortunately for Alicia she outlived both her husband and son. Doesn't happen often, but there can be more than one dowager. Until her death there were three duchesses of Calabria alive. Two dowagers, Alicua and Anne, and the current duchess Sofia, Alicia's granddaughter in law.
