Persepolis Celebrations - 1971

Wasn't this on Dutch television last Monday? I watched it in disbelief but the docu also showed many stories were blown out of proportions, to blacken the Shah. Fact remained that organizing an arch-expensive party at the cost of an impoverished and oppressed population is not the wisest thing to do. See the Romanovs...

I think that the Dutch tv adapted the documentary. It was half an hour shorter at least.

Well formally Greece was still a monarchy at the time so I'd say he was there as a representative of the Royal house of Greece.

Constantine and Anne-Marie were there too. I guess Michael was part of their entourage for the event.

The French Prime Minister Chaban Delmas lost his wife and had to marry quickly his mistress because both wanted to go to this for them fabulous event.

The documentary does highlight one of the gravest mistakes the Pahlavis did in those days. One can see the symbolic significance of celebrating the empire and its long existence, but in hindsight, it wasn't a good look and didn't serve the purpose it was intended to.

The Iranians also mocked the Shah greeting the Great Cyrus in his Tomb, founder of Persia. He, who called himself King-of-Kings, was just the son of a man who was a servant to the Dutch Consul in Teheran.... ! Could the Romanovs at least point to their ancestry: the Shah, on his glittering Peacock Throne and with his grotesque Persepolis celebrations, just the son of a man who served coffee to the Dutch Consul... The Iranians immediately saw right through the façade.

That he was weird, okay... The weirdest thing however was that all those crowned heads of state, who knew he was just a parvenu, were all first row with their best diamonds to co-celebrate.

Luckily some monarchs were so wise to remain home (Elizabeth II, Juliana, etc.).

The Shah has no one to blame for his downfall but himself and his corrupt regime.

Corrupt regime??Sorry!? He was way ahead of his time in all fields.
Iranians had a freedom they lost ever since, due to a nauseas peanut
,a betrayal of sorts. His SAVAK was a kindergarten compared with what is ruling,or rather terrorizing Iran now.

I always had the greatest admiration for the Shahinshah.always.Still have!!
Always frown on unfunded rethoric, regardless by whom and where and when.

Persepolis was one of a kind, the greatness and civilisation Persia once was,
to the modern transformation under Reza.Too sad,too sad he was betrayed
by the French and US at the cost of tens of thousands of lives under Khomenei .

No,Iran, and moreover that part of the world was far better of with him,and his rule then it is now.
