Wasn't this on Dutch television last Monday? I watched it in disbelief but the docu also showed many stories were blown out of proportions, to blacken the Shah. Fact remained that organizing an arch-expensive party at the cost of an impoverished and oppressed population is not the wisest thing to do. See the Romanovs...

Well formally Greece was still a monarchy at the time so I'd say he was there as a representative of the Royal house of Greece.

Constantine and Anne-Marie were there too. I guess Michael was part of their entourage for the event.

The documentary does highlight one of the gravest mistakes the Pahlavis did in those days. One can see the symbolic significance of celebrating the empire and its long existence, but in hindsight, it wasn't a good look and didn't serve the purpose it was intended to.

The Iranians also mocked the Shah greeting the Great Cyrus in his Tomb, founder of Persia. He, who called himself King-of-Kings, was just the son of a man who was a servant to the Dutch Consul in Teheran.... ! Could the Romanovs at least point to their ancestry: the Shah, on his glittering Peacock Throne and with his grotesque Persepolis celebrations, just the son of a man who served coffee to the Dutch Consul... The Iranians immediately saw right through the façade.
That he was weird, okay... The weirdest thing however was that all those crowned heads of state, who knew he was just a parvenu, were all first row with their best diamonds to co-celebrate.
Luckily some monarchs were so wise to remain home (Elizabeth II, Juliana, etc.).

The Shah has no one to blame for his downfall but himself and his corrupt regime.
