December 21, 1549 death of Margaret of Valois-Angoulême, Queen of Navarre

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/68212582/marguerite-de_angouleme#view-photo=118833927

Margaret was born April 11, 1492 in Angouleme. Her father was Charles, Count of Angoulême. Charles' father John was a grandson of Charles V as the third son of Louis I, Duke of Orleans. Her mother Louise of Savoy was the daughter of Philip II, Duke of Savoy and Margaret of Bourbon. She was the oldest of their two children, having a younger brother Francis. She was named after her maternal grandmother. The family moved to Cognac when she was two where her brother was born. Some of her father's bastards were raised along side her and Francis. Her father died when she was four years old, and her brother was heir presumptive to the throne on his death.

Margaret's mother failed to arrange her marriage to the future Henry VIII.

At seventeen she was married instead to her first husband Charles IV of Alencon. Charles was 20. At the same time the King had arranged for her brother to marry his daughter Claude.

Charles was a kind and practical man but unlike his bride he was not an intellectual. Margaret was intelligent and well educated. Though they were married from 1509-1525 no children came from their union.

Francis came to the throne in 1515. His sister grew in prominance, becoming one of the most powerful women at court. Her salon was famous. She was a patron for writers and artists, known to the likes of Da Vincci who died while a guest of her and her brother.

When her sister in law Claude died in 1524, Margaret became guardian of her two young nieces Madeleine and Margaret. They would remain her care until 1530 when her brother remarried and they entered their stepmother's house. The girls had accompanied her when she had made her second marriage.

Her husband had accompanied her brother Francis on his Italian Campaign. After the disasterous battle of Paiva, he had taken control of the French army and taken them back to France. Francis was captured at the battle, and Charles was held as a scapegoat for abandoning his brother in law. He died in disgrace a few months after. Francis would be freed in March of the following year. Though she despised her husband by this point, and his actions in Italy, she nursed him in the last months of life. And she did send a letter to her brother asking for a pardon for her husband.

Following his death Margaret married Henry II of Navarre. Due to Aragon invasion, her new husband only ruled lower Navarre (he would later regain the rest). Her husband was 22, and she was 33. She had retained many of the lands of her first husband on his death.

Marguerite showed her shrewd mind and talent for diplomacy. She helped to secure the freedom of her brother from his captivity in Spain.

After the death of her brother in 1547 she lost any influence, though her nephew continued paying her an allowance. She died at the age of 57 from pleurissy. She was alone as her husband had been away. He had been summoned but he arrived hours after her death. She was buried at the cathedral of Lescar which was the resting place of her husband's family.

Henry would die in 1555.

She had 2 children with Henry, but her only son Jean died in infancy. Their daughter would succeed her father as Queen of Navarre.

-Jeanne: Jeanne III of Navarre. Married twice. First to William, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg but it was annulled. Her second marriage was to Antoine de Bourbon, second son of the Duke of Vendome. Jeanne and Antoine were the parents of five children, though only 2 reached adulthood. Their son would succeed the French throne as Henry IV.

The white marble tomb of Marguerite d'Angoulême, Queen of Navarre and all others at Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was destroyed by the Huguenots on August 21st, 1569 when troops under the command of Gabriel ,Comte de Montgomery sacked the cathedral. Such was the damage inflicted that the royal vault pf the Foix-Albrets collapsed .The cathedral was later restored only to suffer more damage during the French Revolution. In 1929 the royal vault was rediscovered during repairs and the coffins were intact and were repaired in 1929 and reburied under a new memorial plaque.

26 December 1646 -Death of Henri de Bourbon,Prince de Conde

Henri was born in 1588 the son of Henri I, Prince of Condé and Charlotte Catherine de La Trémoille .He was also the cousin of King Henri IV of France and as a senior French Prince up until the birth of the Dauphin he was heir presumptive to the French Throne. Following his father's death both Henri and his mother Charlotte abjured Calvinism and converted to Catholicism. The Prince was buried at the Princely vault of the Conde's at Église Saint-Thomas de Cantorbéry de Vallery. In 1794 the Princely vault was ransacked and the coffins opened and the remains dumped in a common grave outside. The church too was desecrated and and the coats of arms and shields on the monuments were hacked off but the tomb monument did survive and was later restored.

December 27, 1663 death of Christine of France, Duchess of Savoy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris...s_of_Savoy_in_1633_by_an_anonymous_artist.jpg

She was born in Paris at the Palace of the Louvre on February 10, 1606. Her father was Henry IV (Henry III of Navarre). Her mother was Henry's second wife Marie de Medici. Her mother was the daughter of Franceso I, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Archduchess Joanna of Austria. Her father had first been married to Margaret of Valois (daughter of Henry II and sister of Henry III) but the marriage had been annulled. She was the third of her parents' six children, all but one of whom made it to adulthood (Nicholas died at 4). Her siblings were Louis XIII, Queen Elisabeth of Spain (wife of Philip IV), Gaston Duke of Orleans and Henrietta Marie of England (wife of Charles I). In 1615 when Elisabeth married, she became known as Madame Royale, as the senior unmarried daughter of the king.

February 10, 1619 she was married to Victor Amadeus of Savoy. The bride had just turned 13. Her groom was 32. Victor was the son of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy and Catherine Michaela of Spain. She and her husband were the Prince and Princess of Piedemont until 1630 when her father in law died and her husband succeeded to the Dukedom.

Having grown up at the French court she was said to be very frivelous and spoiled. She brought French culture to the court of her new home, and tried to have the court rival that of her sister in England. She had the Palazzo Madama restored and it would be her personal residence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palazzo_Madama,_Turin#/media/File:Torino_-_Palazzo_Madama.jpg

In 1637, 7 years after her husband became Duke, he died. He had fallen ill at a banquet September 25, and died on October 7. Christine was named regent for their eldest son Francis who was only 5 at the time. Francis died a year later but as her next son Charles Emmanuel II succeeded, she remained regent. Charles was only 4 at the time.

Unfortunately it was not easy. Two of her husband's brothers, Thomas and Maurice contested her power and French influence, and a civil war ensued. It took 4 years but with the aid of the French armies, Christine was victorious.

Though her regency officially ended in 1648 when her son came of age, he invited her to remain in her position after. She did until her own death.

Though she had a number of lovers including her brother in law Maurice, she never remarried.

She died at her palazzo at the age of 57, having out lived 4 of her 7 children. She was buried at the Basilica of San Andrea.

Her and her husband had 7 children (and a stillbirth first). 4 of her children reached adulthood. Of the 4 who made it to adulthood, one died the same year that she died.

-Louis Ammadeus: died at the age of 6

-Luisa Christina: married her Uncle Prince Maurice of Savoy after he gave up being a cardinal. The couple had no children and her husband died when she was 27. She never remarried. One of 3 who outlived her mother.

-Francis Hyacinth: succeeded his father as Duke of Savoy at the age of 5. He died of a fever in the following year days before his 6th birthday.

-Charles Emmanuel: succeeded Francis as Duke at the age of 4. Like his older sister, he outlived his mother. He first married his maternal cousin Françoise Madeleine d'Orléans but they had no children. His second marriage was to his original choice of wife Marie Jeanne of Savoy (his mother had vetoed their marriage wanting her niece Francoise instead). He and Marie had one son who succeeded him as Victor Amadeus II.

-Margaret Yolande: She married Ranuccio II Farnese, Duke of Parma. She died giving birth to her only son who died a day after his birth. Her husband would go on to marry twice more. She died at 27, almost 10 months before the death of her mother (April 29, 1663).

-Henriette Adelaide: Married Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria. They had 7 children, 4 of whom reached adulthood (as well as a stillbirth and miscarriages). She was the last child to outlive Christine.

-Catherine Beatrice: She was a twin of Henriette. She died just short of 10 months old. One of two children who died before their father, dying less then 2 months before her father died.

On this day, January 1, 1515 ~ Demise of King Louis XII of France

Prior to the death of Louis XII Louise de Savoie the ambitious mother of future king François was fearful that Mary Tudor would get pregnant and displace her son. The night before King Louis XII died Louise was residing at Amboise and was awoken by a powerful storm and was filled with dread and wrote in her journal that she 'waited for the day to break' and with that came a messenger covered in mud from Paris to announce that 'The King is dead, long live the King' .
Before Louise went to Mass she wrote in her journal 'The First day of January I lost my husband and this the first day of January my son became King of France'.

Louise wasted no time and set out for Paris the following day and went to the Hôtel des Tournelles where she had the royal physicians examine Queen Mary to make sure she was not pregnant. Mary Tudor was in in accordance to the French custom La Reine Blanche in mourning for 6 weeks of solitude at L'Hôtel des Tournelles.

The newly divorced Josephine was created Duchess of Navarre by the Emperor a title which made no sense to me as Navarre was a kingdom.

The Navarre in question was the Chateau de Navarre in Normandy which was gifted to Josephine by Napoleon together with an implicit wish that she'd spend more time there and at Malmaison than in Paris.

Ah that makes more sense I though it was a snub to the Bourbons who were monarchs of both France and Navarre.
