King Charles X of France (1757-1836)

Charles was born Prince Charles Philippe of France. He was the youngest son of the Dauphin Louis Ferdinand and the Dauphine Marie Josephe. His grandfather King Louis XV bestowed on him the title of Count of Artois. Charles X reigned from 1824 until 1830.

King Charles X reviewed his army in the Champs de Mars.

I often wondered why he never remarried following the death of Marie-Thérèse de Savoie in 1805.

When Charles X became king, why did he loosen press censorship?

I always thought it was the opposite that he reimposed Press Censorship and was a staunch conservative which led to his overthrow and exile!

Why did the Bourbon restoration fail in France? I don't think it was just a matter of having a less conservative king than Charles X since Louis Philippe was obviously far more liberal and he was also overthrown.

Charles X was overthrown in August 1830 during the July Revolution he was an ardent conservative and had attempted to censor the press and dissolve the newly elected Assembly.

Someone once said of the French Bourbons
“They have learned nothing, and they have forgotten nothing.”
