As there is no general discussion topic about the history of the state of Vatican City I thought of creating one.
In this topic, facts and curiosities about Vatican City and the history of the Popes can be discussed.

The Coronation of Pope Paul VI in June,1963 ,it was the last Papal Coronation and the ceremony was later simplified to that of an inauguration ceremony.

 
Footage from August 1978 following the announcement of the death of Pope Paul VI. The Pope died on the 6th of August 1978 at the Castel Gandolfo, Italy aged 80.His papacy lasted over 15 years.

According to this article the Queen met 5 Popes.

Maybe the article is incorrect.

She's met 8 popes in person? I really didn't know!
 
As Queen ,Elizabeth II has met with the following Popes at the Vatican

Pope John XXIII in 1962
Pope John Paul II in 1980 and 2000
Pope Francis in 2014

Pope John Paul II paid a State Visit to the UK in 1982 and met with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
Pope Benedict XVI paid a State Visit to the UK in 2010 and met with the Queen at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Prior to H.M.'s accession,Princess Elizabeth paid a visit to Pope Pius XII at the Vatican.
 
The death Of Pope Pius XII at his summer residence Castel Gandolfo on the 9th of October 1958 after a Papacy of 19 years.

 
Monsignor Georg Ratzinger the older brother of Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has died at 96.He was also the former Pope's last remaining sibling alive following the death of Maria Ratzinger in 1991.

Monsignor Georg Ratzinger died today in Regensburg, Germany.

The pen used by Pius IX to sign the Dogma of Papal Infallibility 150 years ago has gone on display in Rome.The signing took place on the 18th of July 1870.

Sorry but the longest reigning Ppoe was not Leo XIII but Pius IX who had a time in office for 31 years and als Pope Johannes Paul II's time in office was longer then the one of the Pope Leo XIII.
 
I hope we still have the Holy Father with us for a while. He is from the Traunstein region I love the beautiful town of Berchtesgaden. Bayern bleibt Bayern. Stephan please bring back the Royal Tour and Travel Event. You always had great information and pics of weddings and burials and more. Thank you.
 
A papal name or pontificial name is the regnal name taken by a pope.
During the first centuries of the church, the bishops of Rome continued to use their baptismal names after their elections.
The last pope to use his baptismal name was Marcellus II in 1555.

The Papal States were once in Avignon, France.
 
The Papal States were never in France,Avignon was an ecclesiastical enclave of the Papal States .During the Avignon Papacy several Popes set up court at the Palais des Papes in Avignon.

The enclave was part of the Papal States until 1791 its annexation by France following the French Revolution.

The Palais des Papes was the scene of a brutal massacre in October 1791 during the annexation.
