The departure of the Papal plane @ 6am to Budapest.

This is the Pope's 1st foreign trip following his recent surgery.


After his arrival the Pope met the Hungarian President and the Hungarian PM, Viktor Orbán.

Archduke Eduard of Austria (aka Eduard Habsburg), the Hungarian Ambassador to the Holy See, together with his parents and his cousin Archduke Georg, the Hungarian Ambassador to France, were amongst those who greeted the Pope when His Holiness arrived in Budapest.

Pope Francis paid tribute to the Slovak Roman Catholic martyr Anna Kolesárová who was murdered aged just 16 in 1944 by a Soviet soldier.

Blessed Anna was beatified in 2018.

 
Today, Pope Francis celebrated an open air mass in the esplanade of the National Shrine in Sastin, the site of an annual pilgrimage each September 15 to venerate Slovakia's patron, Our Lady of Sorrows.

The Pope Francis supports the civil laws on gay unions but clarifies that "marriage is between a man and a woman".
During the flight back from Bratislava to Rome, Pope Francis has admitted that gay civil union laws "seek to help the situation of so many people with a different sexual orientation, and it is important that they be helped, but without giving something that, by its nature, the Church does not give ", which is religious marriage as a sacrament.
