Regarding some of the visitors the Pope has received, they seem to range from a wide spectrum? For example, some of these are businessmen, musicians, and some political figures but how does a religious figure such as the Pope select who to see?

I'm sure he does not decide single-handed, but together with his team of advisers. And it's conceivably that the team also makes additional decisions by itself.

There's a Papal Household with a full Team of Officials and they would also have a team of staff to assist.
