Death and Funeral of Pope Benedict XVI

Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence, aged 95, almost a decade after he stood down because of ailing health.
He led the Catholic Church for less than eight years until, in 2013, he became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415.

According to the press, Benedict XVI expressed the desire to rest in the ancient tomb of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, in the crypt of St. Peter.

May Pope Benedict XVI Rest In Peace.

Apparently the funeral mass will be held on January 5. I don’t know the protocol for the funeral of a Pope Emeritus since it has not happened in many centuries, but I still expect several royals to attend if it is a ceremonial funeral.

If what a friend of mine read is true his funeral will be arranged as if he died in office.

May he rest in peace and see his long office for the concerns of the Catholic Church appreciated by God, his Lord.

Lit De Parade in St Peter’s Basilica from Monday 2 January, and a funeral mass led by Pope Francis on Thursday 5 January at the St Peters Square is what has been confirmed so far…

The vatican spokesperson said that Benedict’s wish is that everything including his funeral should be arranged with as much simplicity as possible…

Wether that means if protocol of former papal funerals will be entirely followed or not, hasn’t been confirmed yet

I can't think of a funeral of a Pope that hasn't had royals from every Monarchy there. I wonder who Charles will send. I expect to see the Catholic royal ladies who have the Privilage du Blanc to use it that day.

He was a brilliant, deeply spiritual man. His master work is "Jesus of Nazareth" imo.

Eternal rest grant unto him, and perpetual light shine upon him.

If I am not mistaken, I think January 5th is also the date of the Requiem Mass for Bernard Barsi, Archbishop of Monaco.

The entire Princely Family is expected to attend, which makes me wonder who will represent the Principality of Monaco at Benedict XVI's funeral?

Very beautiful and moving.

At the time of his election to the Chair of Peter, he said that he expected his papacy to be a brief one due to his age.

But if he had not resigned, he would have had a fairly long pontificate. (2006-2022)

No one went from Monaco for John Paul II's. But in that case Rainier was on his death bed (died day after funeral). Not shocking none of his kids left him to attend.

Suspect Caroline or Stephanie will go, allowing Albert to be at Barsi's.

RIP to a great man.

Absolutely beautiful.

True he lived 16 years but may not have if he hadn't retired. The travel and stress could have significantly cut the time. Back in 2013 he was already in bad health. He likely would not have made another 9 years.

It sounds like any royals that attend will be there in a private capacity.

"Papal funerals typically draw heads of state from around the world, but the Vatican has said that official delegations will come only from Italy and from Benedict's native Germany, suggesting the event will be relatively low key.

Representatives from other countries or organisations can attend in a private capacity, diplomats were told."

Seems like foreign representation (with the exception of Italy and Germany) will mostly be on ambassadorial level then… People who already lives in the Vatican City or in Rome and can attend without needing large delegations…

It was also reported that Pope Benedikt wanted his funeral ceremonies as simple as possible. So probably this is also a reason for not inviting Heads of State etc.

That was my thought yesterday. It is not going to be a state funeral since Benedict XVI was only an Emeritus, so I don't expect Heads of State to attend as they normally would in a regular papal funeral. Maybe the older generation of Catholic royals like Albert and Paola, or Juan Carlos and Sofia, will attend in a private capacity.

I guess the Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder will attend the funeral, as Benedikt was born in Bavaria.
