On September 22nd, Princess Akiko and 30 students from Kokugakuin University harvested rice with farmers in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. The rice workshop was hosted by Shinyusha and a portion of the harvest will be dedicated to Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.

David Chart's article about transferring Japan's culture to the next generation, mainly about Shinyusha. He's a UK-born, naturalized Japanese citizen and his website Mimusubi provides English-language information about Shinto. He and his daughter have attended several of Princess Akiko's workshops.

I am constantly intrigued by the interesting projects and workshops Princess Akiko and Shinyusha organize. There wouldn't be Japanese cuisine as we know it without dashi, so it's well worth learning about! The enjoying a meal part of the workshop would be the best , though.

On October 24th, Princess Akiko attended an event in Tokyo where an agreement was announced to establish Rugby School Japan.

At the reception on October 24 head master Peter Green announced that heads of terms had been signed with an operating partner in Japan to enable the foundations to be laid for Rugby School Japan.

The school, set to open in 2022, will make history as the the first British independent school to open a sister school in Japan.

:previous: Turns out, Princess Yoko asked Shibuya Źarny (Myanmar refugee and now Japanese fashion designer) to invite Aung San Suu Kyi to the Mikasa residence. He was in charge of her clothing for Emperor Akihito's abdication (green dress) and greetings to Emperor Naruhito (pink cape dress).

On November 7th, Princess Akiko of Mikasa attended the opening ceremony of the 7th World O-CHA(Tea) Festival 2019 at Shizuoka Convention & Arts Center in Shizuoka Prefecture. She is honorary president of the triennial festival.

Princess Akiko also visited the Fujisan World Heritage Center in Fujinomiya, Shizuoka.

Princess Akiko visited Wakayama Prefecture November 8-9 for the 32nd National Health and Welfare Festival, an athletic and cultural competition for people over 60. The oldest participant is a 100-year-old man from Toyama Prefecture. Prince Hitachi used to attend this festival.

She also visited Shima Seiki, a top knitting machine manufacturer, and two prefectural museums.

Princess Nobuko visits Osaka Prefecture November 22-25 for the Judo Grand Slam Osaka 2019 competition.
She attended the medal ceremony for Women -52 kg weight category on November 22, day 1 of the competition. She became IJF (International Judo Federation) Ambassador in August.

On November 28th, Princess Nobuko attended the 130th anniversary ceremony of the Japanese Red Cross Society Yamanashi Prefectural Branch at Highland Resort Hotel & Spa in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture. She'll visit the Yamanashi Red Cross hospital in Funatsu, Fujikawaguchiko on the 29th before returning to Tokyo.

On October 24th, Princess Akiko gave a lecture titled "Japanese culture conveyed by rice" at Kokushikan University's Graduate School of Humanities. She spoke about festivals, mythology, rice cultivation, and touched on the enthronement ceremony held 2 days earlier. She is a Special Guest Professor at the university.

On November 25th, Princess Akiko attended a tea ceremony at Samukawa Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture. Genshitsu Sen (Sōshitsu Sen XV), former iemoto of Urasenke tea ceremony, conducted the event which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the shrine's back garden.

Genshitsu Sen is the father-in-law of Masako Sen, Prince Mikasa's younger daughter and Princess Akiko's aunt.

Princess Yoko will privately visit Myanmar December 11-17 at the invitation of Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of Myanmar. The agenda includes a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi and visits to a Japanese cemetery in Yangon and Buddhist sites in Bagan. She will be the first Imperial family member to visit Myanmar.

Princess Yoko met Aung San Suu Kyi during the enthronement in October, see posts #396 and #400

Takafumi Sen, second son of Sōshitsu Sen XVI and Masako Sen (Prince Mikasa's younger daughter), will be confirmed as heir apparent (wakasosho) of Urasenke Tea Ceremony on October 8, 2020. There will be an oath ceremony and tea ceremony at Jukoin Temple, a sub-temple in Daitoku-ji in Kyoto. Another tea ceremony will be held on October 13 at Meiji Shrine in Tokyo.

Takafumi was born in Kyoto in 1990. After graduating from Ritsumeikan University Faculty of Law in 2013, he became a board member of Urasenke general foundation in 2015, and became vice chairman in 2018. In addition to serving tea at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, he attends various events such as workshops throughout Japan.

Elder brother Akifumi Sen is a copywriter/poet and re-registered in the family registry as Myeongsa Kikuchi in 2014. He's also known as Akifumi Kikuchi.


On December 4th, Princess Nobuko began a 2-day visit to Shizuoka Prefecture for the 22nd National Agricultural Leaders Summit. She planted Tachibana seedlings at the JA Shimizu and attended a reception with farmers.

The princess reportedly received an invitation from Aung San Suu Kyi when Myanmar's de facto leader visited Japan in October for the Emperor's enthronement ceremony.

The trip marks the third overseas visit by the princess. She last went abroad in 2016, to the United States.

She plans to pay her respects at a memorial to the war dead in a Japanese cemetery in the city of Yangon, as well as visiting temples and Buddhist ruins.

The princess will also meet Aung Sang Suu Kyi. She will return to Japan next Tuesday.

Princess Yoko arrived at Yangon, Myanmar in the evening of December 11th. She changed into Burmese traditional dress "Longyi" and visited Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist pagoda. She worshipped, offered flowers, water, lights and incensem and walked around the pagoda clockwise.

Thanks for the updates on Princess Yoko's trip to Myanmar, Prisma. That detail about her wearing Prince Tomohito's hat was very interesting: I had noticed the hat since it is so different from what the princesses usually wear, but hadn't realized the extremely personal connection.

She certainly has represented Japan well during this tour, although the implications of a visit at this time are certainly worth thinking about.

On December 13th, Princess Yoko visited Bagan's Heritage Site, Thatbyinnyu Temple, Ananda Temple, and Lawkananda Pagoda. She also visited a Japanese war cemetery and peace monument before returning to Yangon in the evening.

On December 11th, Princess Nobuko attended the 24th IHF Women's Handball World Championship Main Round Group 2 match between Spain and Russia in Kumamoto Prefecture.

On December 12th, Princess Akiko attended the 4th UNWTO/UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture in Kyoto. She is patron of the conference and was the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony.
