On October 8th, Princess Akiko gave a special lecture at Gakushuin University, related to an exhibition about Prince Mikasa. She spoke about her memories of her grandfather who passed away in October 2016. Akiko said, "I came to really enjoy doing research, and it was His Imperial Highness who sowed the first seed for me as a researcher." She learned the importance of doing research on her own and the attitude of a researcher from Prince Mikasa.

In the special exhibition, items related to Prince Mikasa, who was active as a historian of the history of the ancient Orient, along with his childhood clothes and diaries, are on display until December 3rd.

The workshop began with formal worship at the shrine and master Miyako Onoe performed a dance dedication. A quiz corner was setup for children to learn about the movements and history of Japanese dance in a fun way.

In the second half of the workshop, all participants practiced the basics of Japanese dance, such as how to stand and how to use a folding fan, under the guidance of Ms. Onoe and the university students. After learning the choreography, everyone performed the dance.

FNN feature on Princess Yohko for her 39th birthday on October 25
- her personal emblem: star
- Yohko was overdue and Prince Tomohito quipped that she chose to remain in her mother until King Olav’s state visit to Japan was over
- named "Yohko" on October 31
- Princess Nobuko took her to the Imperial Palace Sanctuaries and presentation to Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun on April 27, 1984. She had grown to 63.7 cm and 7,700 g
- began attending Shoto Kindergarten in 1987
- her father called her “Yo-Yo” and “Yosuke,” describing her as relatively easy-going in his essays
- Gakushuin elementary, middle, high school and Women's College
- in elementary school, she was required to join chorus, orchestra, or kendo clubs. Yohko consulted with her parents about joining kendo club because she didn’t like singing very much and wasn't the type to play an instrument.
- however, her parents said “there’s no way you can do that” so she was in chorus club for 1 year
- started kendo in 5th grade of elementary school and is now a 5th-dan
- Yohko became captain in her 3rd year in Gakushuin Girls' High School and served as vice-captain at university
- she was very nervous about her coming-of-age press conference in 2003, practicing with her father the night before
- despite not having much confidence, she recognizes "it would be nice to have this kind of opportunity just once"
- at the time, she described herself as "not forwarding-looking, but backward-looking. If anything, I’m a timid person."
- when Prince Tomohito heard the press conference, he wrote in an essay, ”A week ago, I wrote sentences for all the questions based on what Yosuke would say on a daily basis. After that, you should devise your own way of speaking!”
- however, he seemed satisfied with her responses such as “my father is someone I can really respect”
- to the question “future marriage and ideal man,” Princess Yohko responded “[someone] like my father... my father has a few too many details, so I think it would be nice to have a man with a little less detail." and the press was bursting with laughter
- Prince Tomohito was relieved Princess Yohko was able to make it through the press conference which she had been worried about
- after graduating university, she got a temporary job with the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS)
- later, she was the first female Imperial family member to work full-time for the JRCS in Youth and Volunteer Division and Blood (donation?) Headquarters for 6 years
- she was called "Mikasa Yohko" 三笠瑶子 at work
- she succeeded some of her father’s honorary positions

Princess Nobuko

Good evening, I'm new here on the forum, but I really like the Mikasa family!
I wanted to ask you for confirmation: I found this article on the web that states that early stage breast cancer was found at Princess Nobuko, and I wanted to know if it is true.
If true, I feel very sorry for Princess Nobuko, but an early-stage cancer (stage 1) is treatable and Princess Nobuko does not risk death.
https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2...-breast-cancer-surgery-early-stage-diagnosis/

The Japan Times is a reputable source of information, and the news about Princess Nobuko is being widely reported in the Japanese press.

I'm sorry to hear about the diagnosis, but very glad that the cancer appears to have been found at an early stage. Hoping for a quick and complete recovery for her.

Princess Nobuko

If I'm not mistaken, the Empress Emerita was also operated on for stage 1 breast cancer.

Fortunately, it's caught early. My best wishes to Princess Nobuko for a successful surgery and smooth recovery. Yes, Empress Emerita Michiko had stage 1 and hormone positive breast cancer. Michiko had a lumpectomy and is taking hormone blocker medication. Every case is different and Nobuko's doctors may recommend additional treatment due to her family history, breast cancer subtype, any hormone receptors, and younger age.

Princess Nobuko was diagnosed with stage 1 invasive breast cancer in her right breast. She will be hospitalized at Keio University Hospital on November 16 for further examinations and undergo surgery on November 19.

During the November 4-8 hospitalization for her lumbar fracture follow up, she also had breast MRI, ultrasound, and biopsy. Diagnosis was confirmed on November 11. Princess Nobuko has no subjective symptoms such as lump. She has been undergoing mammography for some time as her mother and grandmother had breast cancer.

A biography of Prince Mikasa, who died in 2016 at age 100, will be published in mid-December. Princess Akiko served as chairman of the publication committee.

Gakushuin University Archives will exhibit materials, photos, and items related to the publication until December 3. There are 162 volumes of records, spanning from age 4 until 1936 shortly after his coming-of-age, from nursery staff and military officers. The contents give a glimpse of daily life and visits with his parents Emperor Taisho and Empress Teimei, who lived apart from their children as customary at the time.

Among the items exhibited is a song titled "Satowo (sugar)" Prince Mikasa (called Miya-chan) wrote as a child probably before entering school, which was later put to music and recorded as a nursery rhyme. His first origami and childhood diary were also saved.

There are also documents and family photos from when he was dispatched to China as an army staff officer after he came of age, and when he worked on historical research after the war.

On October 8th, Princess Akiko gave a lecture and discussion related to the exhibition of Prince Mikasa at Gakushuin University. She spoke about memories of her grandfather and his research. Whenever she asked him about something she didn't understand, he'd take her into his study and send her home with copies from encyclopedias and dictionaries to come her own conclusion instead of answering immediately.

Thanks for the info, Prisma!
I wanted to ask you, in your opinion, when would we have the chance to see Princess Mikasa (Yuriko) again?
In addition to New Year's greetings, New Year's ceremonies, and memorial services for her husband Prince Mikasa, and those for her children, Princes Katsura, Takamado and Tomohito?
Thanks in advance for your reply!

Probably photos and video for her 100th birthday.

We might not see Princess Yuriko on January 1 unless the IHA releases media of the private family greetings. Hopefully, she feels well enough to attend January 2 New Year general public greetings (and it's not canceled).

Thanks for your reply, Prisma! Well, so far she has never skipped the Imperial greetings of January 2nd, so I hope to see her.
