Princess Hisako Takamado and Family: News and Pictures

On October 4th, Princess Hisako attended the "photo exhibition “Scintillating JAPAN 2016, through Diplomats’ Eyes” [...] in Minato Ward, Tokyo, displaying photos featuring various aspects of Japan taken by 72 diplomats from 42 countries."
For the 19th annual event, diplomats captured the outstanding moments they encountered during their stays in Japan. Their subjects included coins thrown into a pond at a shrine or temple, costumed participants at a Halloween event and a store’s shutter decorated with illustrations of smiles in Mashiki, Kumamoto Prefecture, which was hit by strong earthquakes this spring.

At the award ceremony held at the Hills Cafe/Space of Mori Tower at Roppongi Hills on Tuesday evening, Princess Hisako of Takamado, honorary president of the event’s executive committee, praised the long-running exhibition’s significance, saying, “I think that it’s actually come to the stage where Japanese are discovering a lot through the eyes of diplomats.” At the venue, a photo taken by Princess Hisako featuring a wild but warmhearted farewell performance at a youth hostel on Rebun Island, Hokkaido, is displayed along with the diplomats’ photos. Princess Hisako is known for her excellent photography skills.

Pierre Wolf, the spouse of the Guatemalan ambassador, won the Prince Takamado Memorial Prize for his photo “Glass and Lights in the Hands of Yamaguchi Miki” featuring a Tokyo-based Japanese handmade glass artist. Wolf, who focused on Japanese craftsmanship, said Yamaguchi “represents the Japanese spirit: learning, perfection and creativity.”
