On August 30th, Princess Hisako gave lecture about Netsuke at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Afterwards, Princess Takamado delivered a lecture on her PhD topic, Netsuke traditional carvings, to a crowd of community members and dignitaries — including Alberta Lt.-Gov. Lois Mitchell and the Japanese Consul General in Calgary Shigenobu Kobayashi — at the faculty club on campus.
“I hope that (the visit) will bring that visibility, that it will help us renew our relationship with the princess and our Japanese partners, and that we will come up with some more interesting new projects to work on together,” said Cormack.

“The princess, who is an alumnus of the university, contributes and guides the [Prince Takamado] Centre’s initiatives,” she said. “The princess’ interests help shape the initiatives, mainly encouraging students to learn Japanese, but also other connections we share with Japanese institutions.”
Cormack said the U of A works closely with 39 partner institutions in Japan for research, student exchanges, and international learning opportunities.
“We have a good network with other Japanese universities… because of our relationships with the princess,” Cormack said.

On August 31st, Princess Hisako attended the Nikkei Matsuri Festival in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Princess Hisako visited Gifu Prefecture September 23-24 for the 2019 Japan Sports Masters Tournament, a sporting event for athletes over the age of 35. On the 23rd, she attended the opening ceremony and visited a pool for the disabled. On the 24th, Princess Hisako attended the women's softball final in Ibigawa and a volleyball competition in Yamagata.

Looks like it was a 4-day visit to Gifu Prefecture? On September 26th, Princess Hisako attended a ceremony marking the 130th anniversary of the Japanese Red Cross Society Gifu Prefecture Branch.

Netsuke are small toggles, made of many materials such as wood, ivory or ceramics. They were originally vital to anchor sagemono, a hanging object such as a tobacco pouch, from the obi (belt) of a man’s kimono, since the traditional Japanese garment had no pockets. As many Japanese moved to western dress after the 1868 restoration of the Meiji and the opening of the country to the world, these tiny works of art (always having two holes, to attach the sagemono cord) lost their utilitarian purpose. But they then took on a completely new role, as easily transportable works of art to feed the growing western fascination with everything Japanese. [....]
[...] The earliest examples presented by Her Imperial Highness were shaped as round disks with relatively low relief carving – so as not to catch and damage the cloth. She traced the evolution of the use and styles of netsuke through many period paintings and artworks, used by scholars as dating tools. Over time, netsuke became more and more elaborately carved with fine detail. Animals, birds, zodiac figures and ghosts all became popular subjects, providing, as Her Imperial Highness noted, “a gateway into Japanese mythology.”
At the end of her lecture, Her Imperial Highness took questions from the audience, giving detailed answers that only hinted at her obvious depth of knowledge on the topic. But she also revealed interesting personal stories, such as the fact that it was she who first introduced her late husband to netsuke, and that his first gift to her before they were married was in fact, a netsuke.

Mr. NISHINO and Mr. OKADA were the coaches of the “Japan National Team,” while Mr. SASAKI was the coach of the “Nadeshiko Japan.” A national team coach must assemble individual talents to build a team, analyse opposing teams within a limited time, construct the team strategy, and make decisions on how to approach each match. I can only begin to fathom the pressure they endure while taking responsibility to lead the team that represents Japan. However, these three individuals have overcome that pressure. I believe that it is no longer a dream to see Japan rise as champions at the FIFA World Cup someday. I am also looking forward to seeing a Japanese coach being offered with a coaching position for the national team of football powerhouses in Europe and South America. I sincerely hope that the induction of these three individuals can motivate variety of people and help energise the Japanese football community.

On October 8th, Princess Hisako attended the opening reception and award ceremony for the 22nd Annual Japan through Diplomats' Eyes photo exhibition. This year's theme was "Reflections on the Heisei Era."
